FLORIDA US COAST SURVEY MAP 1858 This is another old coast survey map that is dated 1858. Apparently was done between 1848 to 1858. A.D. Bache, Superintendent. The map shows the latitudes and longitudes and the sketch is based on the input of F.H. Gerdes and done by Captain Casey it appears. I also see the name of Major H. Prince, Assistant U.S.C.S. The map measures about 18.25”x 26.5” and it is a delicate condition. There is a 6” straight line tear at the fold mark at the top and about a 3” straight line tear at the fold mark at the bottom, as well. Part of the blank left border is missing but doesn't effect the map itself. Looks like it was removed from a book or log at one time. There is also some discoloration from age. The map would come together nicely if trimmed and framed. Please refer to my pictures for you own evaluation.

Original 1837 Indian Boundary Survey Map FLORIDA Tallahassee Forbes Arredondo Original fold-out government survey map of the Territory of Florida north of the Indian boundary line. With report on the removal of the Seminoles and Indian hostilities, printed more than 178 years ago. The map is drawn on a scale of 18 miles to the inch. And details include township and range lines, rivers, and other features. The map labels the Arredondo Grant. A carryover from the Spanish Land Grant program, which had bequeathed a large block of land east of the Suwannee River to a powerful Spanish merchant. It also labels a line"Supposed to be the Boundary of Claim of Forbes& Co. referring to a large tract in the Florida Panhandle that had been purchased from Spain by three American traders in the late 18th century. The question of ownership of the ... morelands known as Forbes Purchase had gone unanswered for many years. Until the U.S. Supreme Court recognized the landowners' claim in 1835, just two years before this map was printed. The legend key identifies the status of township surveys. And a toned line demarcates the Indian boundary. Among the specific named features on the map are Amelia Island, Ellicott's Monument, Escambia Bay, St. Augustine, Lake George, and the Apalachicola River. Accompanying the map is the original printed report by Robert Butler. Surveyor General, Tallahassee. The text describes the suspension of surveys due to Indian hostilities and the need to re-establish landmarks"where they may have been mutilated or destroyed by the Indians. In this 3-page report. Butler also itemizes the expenses involved in conducting the surveys, including office rent and fuel. He'd been appointed Surveyor General of Florida in 1824, and a year later moved his family to Tallahassee, where he had a home on Lake Jackson.
