They were given to institutions and libraries. The maps and locations of Union and Confederate positions were created by the men and officers that were part of the various battles of the Civil War. This map is Plate VI of Volume I. It includes the defenses of Washington D.C. and battle fields in Kentucky. These maps show the topography and the positions of the Confederate and Union Armies during these engagements. Please review the photos for the details of this Plate. This map measures 18 inches by 29 inches. It has no holes or creases. It does have two tears in the bottom margin about 1 inch and shows some foxing around the edges. The tears would be covered by matting when framed. It is a great piece of history and would look great framed in your den. Office, or family room. Unlike topographical maps or state maps of the era issued by most cartographers. The underlying premise of these Civil War maps was to depict the cartography as it specifically related to events of the Civil War. Thus, individual battles, small forts, troop movements, local rail lines, panoramic views, etc. are often rendered and explained with precision in a manner quite unique. Also, the very large format of the sheet allows for a level of detail which makes the map perfect for display or study by a Civil War buff, since the detail it contains is to be found almost no where else on this scale. In VG. Mostly clean condition. Map displays couple short minor edge-splits in the wide blank margins, all of which will disappear once the map is matted for display. Also some light minor age-wear- typical for maps of this era, and in no way offensive or severe. Overall a pleasing example of this interesting map. Which is well worthy of display. This is an amazing collection of historical pieces that date before the Civil War( Late 1840's- 1850's) I helped my mother move over the past 4 months after 40 years. We found some amazing things that had been tucked away until now and this collection was a real find! The most incredible thing about all of these pieces is that they once hung on the walls of the Historic POINSETT HOTEL in Downtown Greenville. South Carolina and all were done before the Civil War. If you look at many of the pictures, you will see inserts that were put with each lithograph print that states" Property of the Poinsett Hotel" before the piece was framed. As you can see from the pictures, some of the prints have shifted and they are all quite dusty but I chose not to clean or repair in any way these pieces so as to not devalue them in any way. ... moreI would love for someone who truly loves history and the historical significance of these pieces to either leave them as they are in their very old state or invest the money to have them restored. My mother remembered that her father( my grandfather) purchased these MANY years ago at auction when the Poinsett Hotel was going through an ownership change and they have been stored away until now. The Westin Poinsett Hotel now stands in the original location and is a destination stop for many that visit the Upstate of South Carolina. All of the history and prestige is just as prominent today as it was many years ago. Included is a COLTEN'S Map of South Carolina( Printed in 1855) If you look at the insert that was written by whoever framed the piece. It states" Property of the Poinsett Hotel, Map of South Carolina, Printed 1852" but after consulting with an antiques expert, she pointed out that this map was actually printed in 1855 and that whoever wrote out the insert, incorrectly wrote the wrong year. Either way, it's very old and once hung on the walls of this prestigious hotel. All of the print is very small and it is easily understandable that someone misread th
