Description: An extremely scarce and important map of Florida drawn by Horace Drew in 1884. This highly uncommon map. The earliest known example of which was issued in 1867, is considered to be the only pocket map of Florida actually printed in Florida. The first edition of this map was printed by Columbus Drew from his offices in Jacksonville Florida and subsequently updated in an unknown number of editions into the 1880s. This example was printed by Horace Drew, son and successor ... moreto Columbus. It reflects the rapid and hopeful development of Florida through the middle and late 19 century, with numerous railways, roads, and canals noted. Of particular note is the Lucie Canal, shown here leading from Lake Okeechobee to the Atlantic. This canal was part of a plan, supported by Drew, to drain the Everglades via a series of well placed water channels. Fortunately the Lucie canal was never built and the unique Everglades biosphere has been preserved for us to enjoy today. Large m ap of Alabama and Florida States are on opposite sides of atlas page. Original page measures 11" X 13-1/2" Most of the maps in this book do not show copyright dates. The settlement could thus withstand the assault of the local savages(indians) This plan resulted from the near collapse of South Carolina due to the then recent Yamasee War losses(see wikipedia for an overview of this seminal series of events and their effects) Azilia is identified and located in large letters on the map. This imaginary proposed settlement of Azilia appears on only a handful of printed Carolina maps. All of which are scarce or only found in manuscript form. Furthermore, this never-to-be-realized early American settlement only appears on the earliest states of this Moll map(it is changed to"Georgia" on later states) At bottom right. The coverage area extends from the Perdido River to Cape Sable and Elliott's Key. And there is excellent detail throughout. The map shows the progress of the surveys conducted under the direction of Surveyor General John Wescott in St. Augustine. Wescott is also known as the"Father of the Intracoastal Waterway" and a founder of the St. Johns Railroad that connects St. Augustine to the St. Johns River. The map locates the site of the Battle of Okeechobee. One of the major battles of the Second Seminole War, the Arredondo Grant, Forbes Purchase, Cedar Keys, Tampa Bay, Lake Kissimmee, Ellicott's Monument, and Cape Canaveral.
