Printed more than 160 years ago. The map is drawn on a scale of 1:1.200,000, and the coverage area extends from Apalachee Bay and Saint Augustine to the Florida Keys and Dry Tortugas. The image area measures 58.5 x 42 cm[23" x 16-1/2" and the map was published by the U.S. Coast Survey, A.D. Bache, Superintendent, in 1854. The shoreline. Inlets, offshore islands are the major focus, but there are some interior features labeled, including"Indian Hunting Grounds" in the Everglades, numerous military forts, Jacksonville Road, Dense forest of Cypress& Pine broken by Tracts of Prairie& Swamp" north of Charlotte Harbor, and a ... morelarge"Indian District" east of Fort Myers. Coastal details on more plentiful and include notations on bottles dropped in waters off the east coast. With dates and locations where they were retrieved. This is from the original first publishing, that lasted from 1891-5. In general, these maps are very detailed showing lines of approach, battle formations, forts, batteries, dates, various armies and officers involved, topography down to houses in many cases and other details and historical notes. The Union lines are in blue and the Confederate in Red. A very beautiful map that will frame up nicely! Size: The map image measures 16 by 27 inches on a page measuring approximately 18 by 29 inches with plenty of margin all around for framing. It is a full double page sheet as issued.
