Formerly called the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey(U.S.C.G.S. is a United States federal agency that defines and manages a national coordinate system, providing the foundation for transportation and communication; mapping and charting; and a large number of applications of science and engineering. Since 1970, it has been part of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration(NOAA) of the U.S. Department of Commerce. The original predecessor agency of the NGS was the United States Coast Survey. Created by Congress in 1807 to conduct a"Survey of the Coast" This organization represented the Jefferson administration's interest in science and stimulation of international trade. The Jackson administration expanded and extended the coast surveys scope and organization.468 Progress moved ahead slowly and haltingly during the first 25 years. Not until August 29, 1811, did F. R. Hassler sail for Europe to purchase the proper instruments. He remained in Europe during the War of 1812, and then he returned to the United States, arriving on August 16, 1815. Hassler's plan was to employ triangulation to establish his system. Work began in the vicinity of New York City in 1816. The first baseline was measured and verified in 1817. A further Act of Congress in 1818 interfered with Hassler's work. The U.S. Army and U.S. Navy were placed in charge of the survey work. This was used as there are a few notations on it. It measures approximately 34" high by 43" wide. It has no tears nor has been trimmed. While it has browned with age. FLORIDA US COAST SURVEY MAP 1858 This is another old coast survey map that is dated 1858. Apparently was done between 1848 to 1858. A.D. Bache, Superintendent. The map shows the latitudes and longitudes and the sketch is based on the input of F.H. Gerdes and done by Captain Casey it appears. I also see the name of Major H. Prince, Assistant U.S.C.S. The map measures about 18.25”x 26.5” and it is a delicate condition. There is a 6” straight line tear at the fold mark at the top and about a 3” straight line tear at the fold mark at the bottom, as well. Part of the blank left border is missing but doesn't effect the map itself. Looks like it was removed from a book or log at one time. There is also some discoloration from age. The map would come together nicely if trimmed and framed. Please refer to my pictures for you own evaluation.

This sale is for an antique map from. I believe, an edition of the"United States Coast Survey showing Progress of the Survey" as would have been presented to Congress. The map date indicates this is for the period of 1848-1853. This measures about 25" x 17" and looks to be hand-colored. I'd describe it as being in delicate condition. The sharp creases show age-related yellowing. Some of the creases have seperated. A previous owner has reattached them with clear tape on the back. I think this would probably frame up nicely the way it is. NO SALES OUTSIDE THE US without specific pre-approval.
