Salvaged from the Diana cargo shipwreck ... moreand dating to 1817. Sold at Christie's, March 1995. Profusely decorated in vibrant blue on a white ground with a central stylised chrysanthemum flower. Surrounded by abstract conch designs. The reverse of the dish with stylised flower stems. The Diana was licensed by the English East India Company to sail from Calcutta or Madras to Canton. Carrying cotton and of course, opium, which was extremely lucrative. The ship would then return to India from China, laden with silks, tea, preserved fruits and thousands of pieces of beautiful blue and white porcelain. At around 10:30 on the 4th March 1817. The ship was on course for Madras when it met with disaster, hitting some rocks off the straits of Malacca and sinking. The wreck was identified and recovered in 1994 by Dorian Ball of Malaysian Historical Salvors. In March 1995 Christie's auctioned the porcelain cargo in Amsterdam. Now approaching the 200 year anniversary of the wreck. The beautiful ceramics from the Diana Cargo are increasingly desirable and sought by collectors. A beautiful. The Tek Sing set sail from China. Bound for Java, in 1822. She was heavily laden with Chinese porcelain, 1,600 passengers and 200 crew. After 24 days she struck a reef, and quickly sank with large loss of life, earning her the name'Titanic of the East' Salvaged in 1999 and sold at auction in Stuttgart, Germany by Nagel auction in November 2000. Marked with underglaze blue double ring mark with central character. Date early 19thC. Sank february 6 1822. With original auction labels on the base.
