The owl sits perched on top of a single boulder with its prey, a mouse/rat, clutched in its talons. The F. Barbedienne foundry was started in Paris in 1838 by Ferdinand Barbedienne and Achille Collas. Who invented a machine that could mechanically reduce statues. In 1843 they started producing works for Francois Rude. They barely survived the revolution and financial collapse of 1848 which caused many artists and foundries to declare bankruptcy. Barbedienne actively pursued contracts with the many sculptors of Paris contracting with David D'Angers, Jean-Baptiste Clesinger, and even producing some casts for Antoine Louis Barye. Antoine-Louis Barye(1796–1875) A french sculpter most famous for his work as an animalier. A sculptor of animals. Barye began his career as a goldsmith working with his father, but around 1810 he started worked under the sculptor Guillaume-Mertin Biennais, who was a goldsmith to Napoleon. In 1818 he was admitted to the E'cole des Beaux Arts. In 1819, while he was studying at the École des Beaux-Arts, Barye sculpted a medallion named Milo of Crotana Devoured by a Lion.
