Old Antique 1900 Patent Universal No. 1, Food Chopper, Meat Grinder, Cast Iron
Here's an old or antique Universal No. 1"Food Chopper" or meat grinder kitchen tool we received recently with some older kitchen items. This one has many raised markings on the cast iron pieces and seems to have had patents in the late 1800's with one noted as 1900. So this is probably from the very early 1900's. The cutoff piece is reversible and has a multitooth side and a three tooth side. The wood handle is in nice shape with slight signs of use and age as one might expect. My guess is this had been in use for making hash or other ground meat and vegetable type meals up until recently. It is relatively clean though a little fine cleaning could be done. Other markings indicate"L F& C" of New Britain. CT, USA. To lend a little scale to the photos the grinder stands about 8 inches tall from the bottom ... moreof the frame to the top of the frame. The opening is about 3 inches by 2.5 inches. Nice old or antique kitchen tool, seems suited for continued use. That's about it. Up for auction is a cast iron. Vintage, possibly antique, meat chopper/grinder made by L F& C. of New Britain, Connecticut. The model is No. 323"Universal" Meat Chopper. This company, Landers, Frary& Clark, dates back to 1829 and made all sorts of household appliances, gadgets and housewares, right here in the USA. In 1965, it was acquired by The General Electric Company. I will include a short paper describing the interesting history of this company. This chopper/grinder is in great shape and works well and has a wooden knob on the handle. It is approximately 11" tall and 8 1/2" across from the tip of the wooden knob to the opposite end. All its parts are removable for cleaning. I do not know the age of this item but it is a great example of L F& C's American workmanship. This meat grinder shows a last patent date of May 15. 1900. The handle advertises a patent held in Canada on Oct. 12 1897. Great Britain in 1897 and also in Belgium. This grinder could be cleaned up and used today. it is a solid piece. It clamps to the table and turns easily. It would also make a beautiful rustic display. VINTAGE UNIVERSAL MEAT-NUT-FOOD GRINDER This is a vintage cast iron Universal No. 2 Food Chopper. 8 3/4" tall, 5# grinder made in the USA by L F& C in New Britain, Conn. Shows patent dates of Oct. 12, 1897 and Apr 18, 1899 and"RE Sept 5, 1899" Could be manufactured in the 19th century. It has a 9" long wooden handled crank. Has a dark patina surface and shows little sign of wear or abuse. The unit is very clean. The only issue is the clamping piece on the screw clamp is missing and has been replaced by a large nut that is attached to the screw(see image) This does not affect usage. From America's Industrial Age. This is a late 1890's antique food chopper. A Universal#3. Manufactured by L. F. C. in New Britain, Conn. Shows the maker's marks and 1890's patent dates prominently. All moving parts work perfectly and easily. There are(2) changeable round bits. No paint. Just gorgeous, gun metal gray cast iron, with the worn patina you like to see. It has use-wear. It appears to have brass plating because there is still a lot of brass visible as shown in photos. Just clamp it onto a kitchen counter. Table or chair seat, place a bowl underneath, crank the wooden handle and start grinding/chopping. Condition is very good. There is normal wear. Especially the brass plating, but no rust that I could find. I have not cleaned it other than soap and water because I do not know the right cleaner to use that will not harm it. Not sure of year of manufacture. Came from old farm house. So could be from the early 1960s or prior. Heavy solid machine. This is an antique vintage cast iron meat/food grinder chopper. The grinder is about 8 1/2" long x 4' wide at its top. Its handle is wooden. The chopper is marked"L.P.G. New Britain Conn. U.S.A. No 0 Universal Food Chopper" Pat. Oct 12. 1887 Apr 18, 1890 RE Sept 5, 1890" The iron handle is also marked with patent dates. This grinder is in good/fair condition with wear from age& use.
