Old Antique 1900 Patent Universal No. 1, Food Chopper, Meat Grinder, Cast Iron
Here's an old or antique Universal No. 1"Food Chopper" or meat grinder kitchen tool we received recently with some older kitchen items. This one has many raised markings on the cast iron pieces and seems to have had patents in the late 1800's with one noted as 1900. So this is probably from the very early 1900's. The cutoff piece is reversible and has a multitooth side and a three tooth side. The wood handle is in nice shape with slight signs of use and age as one might expect. My guess is this had been in use for making hash or other ground meat and vegetable type meals up until recently. It is relatively clean though a little fine cleaning could be done. Other markings indicate"L F& C" of New Britain. CT, USA. To lend a little scale to the photos the grinder stands about 8 inches tall from the bottom ... moreof the frame to the top of the frame. The opening is about 3 inches by 2.5 inches. Nice old or antique kitchen tool, seems suited for continued use. That's about it. this grinder comes as you see it on the pictures. whole grinder measures 10 length x 5 1/2 width x 7 height inches whole grinder weighs 5 pounds before packing it to ship. the opening on top/mouth measures 6 length x 3 width handle alone is 8 inches long. there are only few accesories with it. All pictured. very easy to remove and put back the accesories on the grinder to clean or change cutting blades. i am not positive it's complete but seem to rotate well. was not tested with any food. there is a small paper with some instruction too. see pictures for writings on bottom and top. one small rubber for base/leg support missing. but does not affect it in anyway. there are scratches. Miles Patents#1 Meat Grinder August 19 1862 Made In U.S.A. This antique grinder is from the late 1800s and is primarily for meat. The date on the grinder is referring to the patent date. Not the date of manufacture. The press is in perfect working order with age patina and great black paint. The paint is chipped off in places but looks great for it's age. The cast iron base and parts are not chipped or worn too heavily. The steel grinding blades are removable and can be sharpened or polished. The interior has surface rust that could be cleaned up with a bit of effort. The wood handle is not cracked or chipped and works smoothly with the device. Originally this grinder would have been mounted on a counter. But it does not include any mounting hardware. Frary& Clark, New Britain Conn. It includes two cutter discs. It measures 10” long excluding screw clamp. It can be clamped to an surface measuring up to 2” thick. It is embossed“L. F. C. New Britain Conn. U.S.A. No. 3 Universal Food Chopper” on the body on one side and“Pat. Oct. 12. 1897, Apr. 18, 1898& Sept. 5, 1899” on the opposite side.
