Fine antique carved oak Flemish cabinet bookcase in the Renaissance style. Inlaid with red tortoiseshell panels, circa 1750. The cabinet in two parts; to the top is a stepped cornice, below are three carved Medieval style heads with four panels of tortoiseshell framed in ebony'Dutch Ripple' molding. The top[part of the cabinet has a single shelf flanked with a pair of ribbed columns with carved capitals, the base of the columns having acanthus leaf carving with oval panels of tortoiseshell, the cabinet having a single drawer also inlaid with tortoiseshell panels. The base having three lion's head terminals with iron rings through their mouths also with more ... moretortoiseshell panels, the cabinet standing on bulbous turned legs with a shelf to the bottom& standing on compressed bun feet. Antique Carved KussenKast Kas Cabinet in Rosewood, Ebony, Oak, Dutch, ca 1650
This is a magnificent piece furniture and equally impressive is the 400 year age of the it. About the time the Pilgrims settled Plymouth Plantation. In fact, many of the pilgrims were from Holland before they had immigrated to England from whence this piece was made. The cabinet has come from a local estate in Newport, RI. It was in storage for many years and I have reassembled it from pieces that in fact looked like an impossible dream. After a few weeks of reassembly, I was so happy to see that almost all of the components have been put back together to reveal a true masterpiece of early furniture fit of a king. I'm a 3rd generation antiques dealer who has been involved in my business as well as other auctioneers and dealers in my career who have been specialist in some of the best furniture ever made and this piece of furniture intrigues ... moreme as much as any piece I've ever had the pleasure of seen. I'm in awe at its age first of all. In America. We seldom come in contact with pieces of this age. In our history, the pilgrim era was a time of mostly simple turned chairs w/rush seats and simple 6 board blanket chests yet we did have craftsman designed masterpieces such as the Hadley chest, simple blanket chests with intricate foliate carving and the Wainscot armchairs made by Thomas Dennis in Ipswich MA also with intricate floral carved backs, both made in the last half of the 17th century. This European cabinet with its more sophisticated bas relief carving in its beautiful exotic wood. Would lead me to believe it was from the Empire/Victorian period in our periods of furniture styles but it is in fact 200 years earlier and about the same era as the masterpieces mentioned above. In comparison though, this piece is much more flashy.
