Bay Colony Antiques takes the utmost pleasure in presenting this spectacular Queen Anne corner cabinet circa 1760-1780. This corner cabinet was originally made for Williams College in Williamstown. Ma. The corner cabinet remained as part of Dodd Hall until the Dodd house was purchased in 1911 by L.G. Treadway, a graduate of Dartmouth College whom owned 55 New England based inns. L.G. Treadway converted the Dodd House into the Williams Inn and the corner cabinet remained with Williams Inn until 1974 when Williams Inn was turned into the first womens dormitory for Williams College. L.G. Treadway sold many of the antique contents of the Williams College collection at Dodd Hall to Dr. Richard Ellison, the collection remained together in the estate until purchased by us. This corner cabinet is both exceptional and rare, being 8' Tall and having ... morewonderful tombstone designs in each of the upper doors. The surface of the cabinet shows remnants of the original paint finish, with the interior retaining the paint finish throughout. The cabinet has a fine crown molding which continues along the sides with the original scribe molding. Each raised panel and backing board are New England red pine while the piece is made of exceptional cherrywood. A few chips of wood are missing from the lower left base. The interior of the cabinet has five upper shelves and two lower cabinet shelves. English Chippendale Broken Arch Hanging Corner Cabinet or Cupboard Blind Doors. Late 18th Century c. 1780-1800 Item# 130001GHP27 This is a very fine solid mahogany English Chippendale Hanging Antique Corner Cabinet or Cupboard with a Broken-Arch Pediment. Crafted during the last quarter of the 18th Century c. 1780-1800. Of outstanding construction. It features thick planed and carved crown molding along the Broken-Arch, raising the visual plane of the cabinet quite intensely to culminate in a turned finial over a plinth scroll cut of the solid. The sides of the case bevel to soften the edge before joining the wall, these flanking two blind doors. The doors are constructed using a through-tenon mortised frame locking in the inset chamfered panels. Each with shapely notched crests and edged by cockbead molding, both functioning smoothly on ... moreoriginal brass hinges. Inside of the doors, the original hardware remains untouched, the hand forged iron latch on the left door locking the panel in place, the original steel lock on the right door still in place. The interior is four shelves, all but the second-to-top shelf backed by a silk upholstery. The back of the case is entirely dovetail construction. The quarter-sawn oak secondary woods locking into the top and bottom boards without the use of nails or screws. Over the years, this has placed some strain on the back-most corners, as the oak is not thick enough to create an indestructible joint, resulting in some light cracking and looseness where the two boards come together. The cabinet is meant to be mounted using multiple screws through the backboards, coupled with the original hanging tabs at the top of the cabinet on both sides. Measuring just 67 7/8" high, it is an incredibly attractive size and is simply magnetic visually. Crafted of solid walnut primary woods, this is almost indistinct behind a dry and well oxidized early surface- this beautiful depth and darkness is indicative of the love and care shown to this piece for the last two hundred years, where it was left untouched and unaltered in basically the same state as when it first left the craftsman's shop. Antique Painted European Corner Cabinet, 18th Century Europe, Bible Scene
Antique wooden corner cabinet dating to the late 1700's. The cabinet has two curved doors that have a scene painted on them. Probably biblical. There is a king with a crown, some Roman guards and other various people. I wish I could identify the scene but I am not a biblical scholar. The cabinet measures 36 inches high and each side is 13-3/4 inches deep. It measures 22 inches across the front. Condition is good for being over 200 years old. The cabinet is solid though there are some splits to the sides and one small part cut out, all over wear and flaking paint. It does not appear to ever have had the paint touched up. The hinges have some breaks and are held to the cabinet with all kinds of screws and nails through out the years. This piece is far from pristine, but absolutely fabulous. The cabinet has fabulous inlaid marquetry of urns. Flowers, butterflies, birds, foliage and line-inlay overall. The upper section is enclosed by an arched glazed door, the base features a bow fronted pannelled door and it stands on bracket feet. This piece is illustrated on image 527 of the Wallace Nutting Furniture Treasury. This was made in Connecticut around the area of the state boarders of New York and Massachusetts. This phenomenal cabinet comes to us from an extremely important Hudson River Valley Estate of a noted American Furniture Collector. It was completely professionally restored in the earlier part of the 19th Century(these architectural cabinets were always painted to match the interior of its original housing) and its interior has been professionally ... morerepainted several times to match the various design schemes of its past owners. It was blue at the time of its image being reproduced for Reverend Nutting's Publication and its last owner had it done in the present red color. This cabinet is in a highly waxed surface thus creating the shine in our images. We received it without its crown molding face. It was made with just a single plank facing and our woodworker will have it new one crafted in the next week or two. The"over board" crown was also noted not to be the original in the Furniture Treasury. This. Like all the large corner cabinets of the very early 18th Century, were"built in" units. Georgian 1790 Antique English Hanging Cupboard or Corner Cabinet. An authentic Georgian period hanging corner cabinet dates from about 1790. This beautiful cabinet was hand crafted in England of solid mahogany with delicate inlaid satinwood stringing or banding. The door panel is a single wide plank of figured mahogany. Hand chamfered or raised on the back. There is a shrinkage separation from age, see photos. Hand planing marks can be felt everywhere on this antique furniture. Hand wrought rose cut nail heads are visible on the back. A key works the wrought iron lock.
