The Jacobean period of furniture style began 1603 in England with the reign of James I and ended 1688 with the reign of James II. During this time. America began to receive a migration of new people, first in Jamestown in 1607, then Plymouth in 1620. Jacobean is often described as the earliest form of furniture making in America. Categorized in a more narrow sense, it has been referred to as Pilgrim furniture. Due to the skills of the early colonists, the furniture was much more primitive than their English counterparts. Maybe a better term to use is Early American furniture. Colonial Sense wants to first start with Jacobean furniture in England since it inspired much of the colonial furniture in America. Then we will discuss the Early American furniture specifically made in this country and the skilled craftsmen whose work is highly sought ... moreafter today in the antique industry. With the help of John Fiske and Lisa Freeman, we used dates in our article pertaining to when certain styles changed in the Jacobean period. These dates are the center of roughly a five year period and should only be used in determining if a piece is early or later in the period. Brass drop handles are correct for period and have considerable age but the cupboard has had another set of handles at some point in its history. Minor dings. Some small restorations and marks consistent with age but a very well cared for family piece which has survived in remarkably fine condition for over 350 years. The larger than average proportions indicate that this press cupboard was made for a grand and wealthy household. Beds and press cupboards tended to be the most important and valuable items of household furniture and this cupboard would have been placed in the banqueting hall and used for storage of drinking cups and other vessels. It is increasingly rare to find an early English court press cupboard which has not been subjected to the elaborate carving that the Victorians frequently added to make their inherited furniture more fashionable. A TRUE FRENCH RENAISSANCE OAK& WALNUT CABINET CIRCA 16TH& 17TH CENTURY! to start a new paragraph use- Without a doubt the earliest find I have ever made is this absolutely exquisite French Renaissance oak and walnut cabinet circa 16th& 17th cabinet. The center mass which incorporates the doors and sides has tremendous early Renaissance motifs. Italian influenced carving symbolism was merged into a French style, The use of architectural decoration includes vaulted pilasters& urns, oval panels below grotesque figures makes a very powerful statement. Deeply carved scrolls surround each unique masque. Finger carved dentils surmount frieze. Notice the spirals between each finger. The area of the casebetween the red ribbons note of the photos is period a very good and historically accurate cabinet maker sat the original case on ... morea later hand made base probably during the Renaissance Revival Period Circa 1880. He further restored the piece by adding a crown moulding above the frieze. The interior doors are additions and behind are split sections with shelving. The original dark finish is typical of the Renaissance and has been rubbed with oil for many decades. This cabinet is very heavy and has the original section it is thick and dense. These pieces in their day acted as a safe. This is a one of a kind survivor saved by an intelligent cabinet maker before his time. Renaissance oak cupboard, Flemish, 17th century
This is a genuine piece from the 1600’s. It is oak except for the drawer front and torches which are of walnut(the use of multiple kinds of wood was not so unusual in the 17th century) The drawer has a lion mask in the center and carved leaves in the shape of a face on either side. The two doors are decorated with a geometric pattern framing a lion mask. The posts have flaming torches. The sides are paneled with choice-grained cuts of oak. The back has an interesting arrangement of stiles and rails crossing in the middle. With an early type of block(non-beveled) panels fitted by tongue and groove.
