Some seals with Chinese Kanji characteres are painted by the technique of MAKIE. These bowls are very refined Japanese traditional handcraft. To create different colours and textures. Maki-e artists use a variety of metal powders including gold, silver, copper, brass, lead, aluminum, platinum, pewter, as well as their alloys. Bamboo tubes and soft brushes of various sizes are used for laying powders and drawing fine lines. As it requires highly-skilled craftsmanship to produce a maki-e painting, young artists usually go through many years of training to develop the skills and to ultimately become maki-e masters. Hammered, and engraved. if you look closely it is much more detailed and is quite eye-catching. the pot has a hand carved wooden handle and wooden finial they are held with silver mounts. the pieces are nicely footed with 4 ball feet and both signed on the bottom by maker"S.P.C. with maker mark the top opens and closes on a hinge by the wooden handle and has a great spout on the opposite side. the sugar bowl has a dual stylized handle and ribbed trim at the top. they are in nice shape with a shiny silver finish. they both have copper shining through at some raised spots but gives it a wonderful look. the pot measures 10 1/4 inches long by 6 1/2 inches tall and the sugar bowl measures 7 inches long by 4 1/2 inches tall. the wooden handle has two hailing cracks that are very hard to see. Seigan Yamane. The seal of the potter is stamped on the bottom. The original wooden box with the signture of the pottery is also included. Seigan Yamane was born in 1952. And started making Hagi ware in 1987. And then, he started his own pottery in 1992 and has ever been awarded a lot of prizes for his great works. Hagi Ware is a type of Japanese pottery most identifiable for its humble forms and use of translucent white glaze. It originated in the early 17th century with the introduction of potters brought back from Japanese invasions of Korea. The local daimyo of the time were very interested in tea ceremony and funded production of this ware. Potters mix different types of local clay. The most standard result is a pink-orange color. Called Korean clay. Wares are formed on the wheel and decorated with translucent glaze made of feldspar and ash. The signature chip located on the bottom is a local tradition from the Edo period when potters would deliberately mark their wares in order to sell them to merchants instead of presenting them as gifts to the Mori clan.
