Opened 18 1/4" Presented is a wonderful antique wooden lap writing desk. With Damage. It was crafted in America. Circa Mid 1800s. This special lap desk was made of a wood with veneer over and a mother of pearl inlay. The interior writing surfice has a blue velvet fabric glued on and a black velvet ribbon acrossed the top where the hings are. There are six compartments on the inside for paper. Writing tools, and whatnots. The top lid has some cracking and veneer is missing on the side and it has damage where the hinges go(on top and bottom) See photos. The lock is present and there is no key. Locking top plate needs to be reattached. Its hinges need to be reworked. The hinges are included. But the location on the box needs to be repaired. I HAVE HAD THIS FOR A FEW YEARS BUT I AM NOT AN EXPERT SO I WILL DESCRIBE THIS THE BEST I CAN. DATED MAYBE EARLY TO MID EIGHTEEN HUNDREDS? IT IS IN ORIGINAL CONDITION. LARGE.SOLID AND HEAVY! BRAMAH LOCK IT'S A VERY OLD ONE AS ITS HALLMARKED I.BRAMAH WITH A CROWN ABOVE AND 124 PICCADILLY(BETWEEN 1798-1813) THE SPRING LOCK WORKS EXCELLENTLY AS DOES THE KEY THE LIDS OF THE INKWELLS ARE HAND PAINTED ENAMEL. A PUSH BUTTON SPRING OPENS THE LIDS AND THE ORIGINAL BOTTLES ARE INSIDE. BOUND BY LEATHER WHICH IS WORN. BOTH WORK PERFECTLY. THE PEN HOLDER HAS BLUE FELT OR VELVET WHICH IS STILL BRIGHT BUT WORN. THE BASE WHICH HOLDS THE PAPER IS COVERED IN THE ORIGINAL PINK PAPER WHICH IS STARTING TO CRUMBLE AND THERE ARE STILL THREE PAGES OF THIS VERY OLD PAPER LEFT! BRASS FITTINGS MEASUREMENTS- HEIGHT 19 1/2" OR 50CMS. WIDTH 20 1/4" OR 51 ... more1/2CMS, DEPTH 8 3/4" OR 22 1/4CMS CONDITION- IT LOOKS TO ME LIKE IT IS IN ORIGINAL CONDITION. THERE IS A MARK A THE TOP WHERE SOMETHING HAS DISSOLVED A BIT OF THE PAINT AWAY. AND THE BACK PANEL HAS SHRUNK A LITTLE BIT MAKING A 1MM GAP(HAVE A LOOK AT THE PHOTO ITS JUST UNDER HALF WAY DOWN) THE PAPER ON THE BASE IS COMING AWAY. GOOD TO VERY GOOD CONDITION.
