LARGE Antique CHINESE Woven Bamboo Basket Suitcase Chest VTG 30s or Earlier
HUGE antique Chinese woven bamboo chest. Opens up like a suitcase ~ completely handmade ~ vintage pre-1935 Measures 23" x 17" and stands 11" tall as seen in first picture. Made of double-layered bamboo basket weave. The outside has a fine diagonal weave, inside has a much larger weave(see pics 9 and 10) Lid is reinforced inside with wide bamboo slats which are cracked at the bends. This does not seem to affect the stability of the lid, it is still holding together quite well despite this. There is some breakage to the weave along the inner back edge between the slats(pic 11) Last pic shows minor breakage above the latch. Otherwise the basket weave is in great condition inside and out, see pics. Picture 8 shows the bottom construction. It is reinforced with a 1" x 1" x 12" piece of wood down the center. The cinnabar ... morered painted trim around the mid-section and bottom is made from single long bamboo pieces which have been dampened to form the curve for the corners. Bottom piece is positioned as a platform for the chest and sits evenly with no wobble. Latches are made of metal ~ front has loops painted red. Latch painted black/red, sliding bar closures were painted cream but most has worn off. Sides have unpainted metal handles that attach to red painted loops. Back has 3 wire hinges, all painted red. Minor scuffing due to age and use. See pics. No odors except a very faint antique wood odor inside ~ from my smoke-free home. A fantastic and unusual piece. I've never seen another like it! Looks wonderful opened up displaying various Asian textiles and objects inside as a treasure chest! PLEASE examine all pictures. This belonged to a woman that traveled back and forth from the USA to England many times when she was younger. I Don't know the age of just how many trips it made. But it's pretty old and was well used. nice piece of vintage history that would make a great display piece. This piece just has tons of character! Details: Measures 28" x 20" x 9" Made of a combination of materials. Frame is metal. While they are old and hard to read. You can see on some of the lables that this bag made the trip from New York to Retford, Nottinghamshire, England and back on one trip, aboard the Queen Mary. Queen Mary was in her prime from 1936 thorough 1946. Eventually being decommissioned as late as 1967, so the bag is at least 47 years old, but of course looks much older than that. Based on the customs inspection labels. I would say it did do some traveling in the mid 50's later in life. RARE ANTIQUE 1910s SUITCASE w/Compartments & Ephemera Needs Restoration MUST SEE
This is a rare and awesome antique suitcase. Dating to the Edwardian Era It is leather(I think) over wood? cardboard? with metal corners, studs, latches and many compartments-this may have been a salesman's sample case This wonderful piece of luggage measures 20" x 17" x 7 3/4" deep; it locks. But alas, there is no key; it has a couple of small compartments with doors, a flip down door section that will hook closed, a lift-out tray and various divided sections, some with brackets designed to hold something(bottles, perhaps? and it has iron support bars on the bottom-this piece is very heavy and when I first lifted it. I thought it was full of stuff, but when I opened it, it was as you see it in the photos-just the paper items inside Inside. Found underneath the lift-out tray was some old ephemera/paperwork, including an ... moreold tattered cabinet-type photo, a car order for a used car, dated 1918, some other odd bits& pieces and a receipt-one piece is dated 1917. So that gives some idea of the age of this suitcase-this paperwork was folded up and creased-I unfolded it for the photos-I will include it with the suitcase as it came with it and is fun to look at(By the way. The car was a used touring car and sold for a whopping $400.00! Now. As for condition: This suitcase is very. Very old and looks it. The leather is stained. Spotted and split in places; the brass? metal is tarnished, pitted and discolored; the inner lining fabric is torn/spotted/worn in places-please see all of the photos to judge condition and appearance-this piece is in need of restoration to return it to closer to its original condition. But, that said, it is a really cool piece of history and it would make an awesome period display piece even left as it is; it would also be good as a Halloween or photo prop. The handles are leather as well and the tag on the pocket states that it is top grain cowhide with the Tanners Council of America Seal. This bag measures 18' X 9½' X 10' high. When opening you can adjust the bag to keep the top open while you are putting in or removing items. Great so that it doesn't keep partially closing. I love going to estate sales and I am a sucker for OLD record players. Radios and other items too. I recently acquired this hand crank Victrola at an estate. The handle was barely hanging on by a thread and has come off as you will see in some of the pictures. It also has loose parts and one place where a piece of metal has come off and might need to be soldered back on or repaired. After turning the hand crank, it does spin. It does need some work/needs repair or maybe could be used for parts. It has extra needles with it. I am selling just as I purchased. And, I do not know what all it needs. 12 photos uploaded hoping you can tell more about it and the condition. There's a'M.S.P. in a gold color lettering on the front as you will see in a few of the photos. Great Antique HARTMANN suitcase. Trunk, chest. With KEY! Brown with riveted metal trim. This very old suitcase is brown in color with light brown metal trim. The metal trim is riveted all around. The handle is brown leather. And it's hardware brass. Suitcase includes it's original key! All latches still close and lock easily though the right side lock could use a slight adjustment. The chest also has all its original straps and hardware on inside. Trunk measures approx. 25 in. from side to side. 18 in. From front to back and 8 in. tall. Suit case inside is 4 1/4 in. deep. The item weighs just under 12 pounds. The inside of this lovely old trunk is actually pretty clean considering its age. Antique 1920's? ROOS BROS Vtg Leather 26" Suitcase Luggage. Roos Bros was/ is a clothier in San Francisco CA. This piece of luggage would make a good character display piece. The suitcase is solid over all. But has many spots of peeling leather as noted below. This suitcase is about 26" long and 14" tall. Exterior The straps and buckles are in good condition for their age. One strap has a tear in the middle. Latches are heavy duty and work well. Case has a lock. But there is no key. One side of the exterior has a 3 1/2" tear on the seam. The other side has a 2 1/2" tear along with a large 3" tear/ scuff on the right top corner. There is obvious peeling leather over much of the exterior as shown in the photos. Interior The two buckled straps on the top half are in very good condition. This wonderful old suitcase has been in my family for many years. It was manufactured by“THE MC LILLEY& CO” COLUMBUS, O” There is a brass“L” plate of the company logo on the bottom of the suitcase. Near the logo, embossed in an oval in the leather, is“GUARANTEED GENUINE COWHIDE” It is definitely worn and rustic and authentic, but the construction is still sound and solid, and could still be used if so desired. Dark brown in color. The outside of the suitcase has scratches and wear. Especially on the corners, where the leather is worn through in a few spots. The thick leather handle, attached with two metal pieces, is sound and solid. The brass latches work perfectly! No keys, however. The inside of the suitcase is lined with fabric. For sale today is a real cool looking vintage circa late 1940’s“ Tra-Vler” portable suitcase style Phonograph. It is in“EXCELLENT” cosmetic condition. Especially given it’s age! This record player has internal speakers and a working electric motor. Unfortunately it does not have a needle so I could not test it with any records. It can play all three speeds of the old records, i.e. 78, 45 and 33 1/3 rpms. The red ALLIGATOR skin pattern is in excellent condition. It’s a real eye-catcher and would make a great display! Large Antique Walrus Skin/ Hide Suitcase. Suitcase is 24" x 13 1/2" x 8" deep. Stamped Genuine Walrus on the bottom. Weights 9 lbs before packing. latches work. Although it takes some work to get them lined up. No key for lock. It has lots of character(damage& wear) Some time a long time ago the handle was repaired with some wire with leather strap backing. Great display piece. I imagine a skilled person could take it apart and use the skin to make something else. Maybe boots or purse.
