Virginia at a bankruptcy auction for $500. Placed in charge of the small, corrugated iron building, his son Edward Hudson Lane decided to convert the facility in order to make cedar chests. The Lane family was unsure of what success they would have selling chests, so they originally named the company The Standard Red Cedar Chest Co. The firm manufactured and sold chests used to store linens and other items for setting up housekeeping, as well as keepsakes. Early production of about ten chests a day was sold through independent salesmen working on commission. In its early days. The business was run on a shoestring budget. Nearby buildings were rented as demand grew, with finished parts transferred from one building to another by means of a mule-drawn carriage. Ed Lane later recalled he was"one jump ahead of the sheriff most of the time. When a banker told him the company was insolvent, Lane asked him what that meant. The elder John Lane never ceased to be amazed that the factory actually could sell all its production-which at the time of his death in 1930 came to between 250 and 300 chests a day. During World War I. When the federal government barred rail freight deemed nonessential, Standard Red Cedar Chest converted its plant to producing pine ammunition boxes. This is in excellent condition with no veneer loss. The wood is a walnut veneer and has a burled walnut inlay on front. There is a lock on this but I do not have a key. The cedar inside is like new and still has the cedar smell. The tray inside is in nice condition with purple felt(felt probably needs to be cleaned) This is 4' long and 19" tall. Early LANE c. 1950 'Virginia Maid' Cedar Chest--3/4" Solid Red Cedar Panels
Guess what? I took apart a Lane Cedar Chest once only to find out that it was not really cedar chest at all. What it revealed itself to be was certainly enlightening. For concealed between a thin layer of cedar veneer. An even thinner layer of decorative fascia veneer, and a 3/4" thick top strip of cedar running horizontally along the edge was in fact a huge sheet of PARTICLE BOARD! Prior to this rather cleverly deceitful method of increasing a company's profit with the use of inferior material under the guise of quality woods. There used to be a disclaimer attached to such pieces as this LANE'VIRGINIA MAID' CEDAR CHEST This disclaimer identifies the products used in the construction of furniture. And on the inside of the lid it says: 70% MADE OF 3/4" RED CEDAR PANELS(JUNIPERUS VIRGINIANA) So this isn't one of those ... moreparticle board pieces. It is almost all solid wood except the veneers on the front and top, and the decorative base. ART DECO STYLE The blotchy areas are just where varnish remains-almost all of the varnish has totally disappeared. Leaving a raw piece with just those blotchy areas mentioned-the piece is almost immaculate condition otherwise. MCM Walnut Veneer Lane Cedar Chest in Very Nice Original Condition 60's Danish
Lane Mid Century Modern Cedar Chest This is a lovely cedar chest finished(if I’m understanding the serial number) on 04-07-65. It shows a bit of wear from the years– the ordinary bumps. Nicks, and scratches even well-cared-for furniture shows- but remains in very nice vintage condition. Its veneers. Which are complete, show even coloration– apparently it’s been carefully stored out of the sun for all these years. The air-seal gasket is still intact on the lid. It has one spot(approx. 1/16" x ½" please see the closeup) of what looks like nail polish on the top. There are small scratches and indentations on the top. Of which I’ve tried to show the worst. When the light is coming across the top of this chest you can see proof that it is almost 50 years old. There is one quarter-sized spot on the top where the varnish is slightly ... moreopaque- you can just barely see it in one of the photos. Oddly enough I can't see it when looking at the top- only in the photos. The previous owners were smokers. Though I can no longer notice any smell you’ll know best whether this lovely cedar chest will work for you. The chest is 43 ¼" wide x 16 ¾" deep x 20" tall. In spite of it’s minor flaws it is a lovely chest and a pleasure to see. I’m not the original owner. The original locks are not included in this sale. This is a Cedar Hope Chest manufactured by the famous Lane Furniture company. It has a full cedar interior and fold down shelf with felt bottom. The exterior has faux draws with handles. I inherited this hope chest from my mother and it’s at least 53 years old. I can’t use it as I don’t have the room. It’s in good condition but there’s some cosmetic issues I think could easily and cheaply be fixed making it perfect. The inside dimensions are 15-1/4” H x 15-1/2” W x 44-3/8” L. 1960's cedar chest by Lane, beautiful needlepoint embroidery top dark pine color
My mother bought the cedar chest back in the mid 60's. I think she got it at the Barker Brothers furniture store in west Los Angeles. It has a dark pine or Ebony or whatever finish you want to call it. It probably will ship UPS Freight or maybe even USPS parcel. Just depends. The embroidered top is factory original, it came that way and kinda reminds me of early colonial as far as the style goes. This has the original lock and if you want, you should replace it if you have small children or grandchildren as this is supposed to be airtight and will lock when closed. I understand that Lane furniture makes a child proof lock so that they can't get locked in but you would have to order that from Lane and I don't know what the cost is. This is a beautiful 1970's Lane cedar hope chest. As you can see in the pictures it in beautiful shape. It measures 48.5l x 21.5t x 18d. I have children in the house so for safety reasons the lock assembly has been removed but it does come with the chest as well as the key. And is simple to reinstall. For sale is the nicest Lane Cedar Chest I have ever came across! This is a beauty of a chest with a very nice black leather cushioned top and a very fancy front wood inlay and its on wheels. This chest is 4 Foot long. Stands 16" tall, and is 16" deep. Please note that I have removed the lock due to Ebay policy as the lock on it was one that automatically latches. Lane does give new locks for free however, you call them at 800-327-6944. This is in Beautiful condition! There is one minor scratch on the left side that you can see in the last picture and there is one screw on one of the back hinges that has been replaced. I got this at an Estate Sale and you can tell it has not been sat on as the Leather and cushion is in Pristine condition, no cracks, no tears, no wear at all. It stands 9" tall x 11" wide and is 5" deep. The front is glass. The body is metal and the base is wood. This type of sign would have sat in the retail store. Lane Cedar Lined Hope Chest, Early 1970's- PICKUP ONLY
FOR PICKUP ONLY This is a Lane Cedar Lined Hope Chest from about the early 1970's. Measurements are approximately 17" deep x 42" long x 24" high with a dark Early American finish. My apologies for the glare in the photos. Apart from needing a good cleaning on the outside. It is intact with mostly minor wear and tear on the outside except for the top where a young child attempted to scratch a few words into the wood. I doubt it could be sanded off but the area could be filled with putty if the item was to be repainted or simply covered with a cushion if the original finish is desired. There is a push-button lock but no key, I HAVE REMOVED THE INTERIOR LATCH MECHANISM FOR SAFETY REASONS PER REQUIREMENT OF CONSUMER PRODUCT SAFETY COMMISSION.
