A Truly Elegant Hand Carved Vintage Japanese Treasure Chest- A 5 Piece[3 Tiered] Chest- OR ROUND BOX Hand Carved with beautiful artistry of the Japanese Countryside. Including the beautiful Mount Fuji in the background, Two small tiers and one large tier. Each approx 9" in diameter. Large tier is 2 1/2" deep. Smaller tiers are 1 1/8" deep. approximate measurements] Footed Tray is approximately 10 1/2" in diameter. The entire Chest stands slightly over 9" tall. And is also about the same width. All rounded sides are beautifully carved. As well as is the magnificent lid of the chest. The footed base is also beautifully carved. And can be used as a serving tray and extends to almost 10 1/2" The entire chest is multi-functional and can be used for storage. Serving, decorative accent, or collector's conversation ... morepiece, etc. What makes this vintage Chest even more unique. Is that it came overseas from Japan in 1948 with the Seller on the ship, the USS Admiral Sims after WWII had ended, and has been in with the same family since that time. It was purchased in the war torn part of Tokyo known as the Ginza, which looked nothing then like the Ginza of today.as the people of Japan in 1948 were working very hard to get their lives and their country back together post WWII. Type of Wood: I have not had the wood identified as of yet. The entire weight of the chest is 4 Lbs. 2 Oz. The wood is absolutely beautiful. And is not light weight. It reminds me of Walnut, but I am not sure. Japan has many beautiful type trees, which could be used to create such a beautiful artifact. If there is a wood specialist out there who might be able to make a good guess, I would be open to research on this matter. I feel sure it is not teakwood. It is much too heavy.
