TRANSLATE Arabic Chinese French German Greek Indonesian Italian Hindi Japanese Korean Swedish Portuguese Russian Spanish Size 7 1/4 Genuine Ancient Engraved ... moreRoman/Byzantine/Macedonian Silver Ring Twelfth Century A.D. with Stylized Abstract Design. CLASSIFICATION: Ancient Byzantine Macedonia Engraved Silver Ring. ATTRIBUTION: Eastern Roman Empire(Constantinople) Twelfth Century A.D. SIZE/MEASUREMENTS: Fits ring size 7 1/4(U.S. Diameter: 19mm x 18 1/2mm(outer dimensions) 18mm x 17mm(inner diameter) Bezel: 12mm(height) 12mm(breadth) Fixed Width 2 1/2mm Band. Weight: 2.20 grams. CONDITION: Very Good! Completely intact. Moderately light wear evidenced consistent with ancient usage. Very faint porosity(surface pitting caused by contact with earth while buried) Professionally conserved. DETAIL: A very well preserved silver ring circa 9th or 10th century A.D. As you can see. The ring is very handsome and elegant in design. The"bezel" or face of the ring bears a very distinct abstract design, however though we’ve scrutinized the engraved design carefully, we’re unable to determine what it represents. Some believe it to be the abstract representation of a shaman’s face. However it seems most likely to be the abstract representation of two stags with antlers locked in combat. Given the cultural popularity of such depictions in the region during the ancient and medieval world, this seems most likely. This is a fairly light weight ring, more like a contemporary ring than the thick and lumpy rings often produced during the early years of the Roman Empire. It is a very handsome and complex design, and probably was a very significant personal possession of whomsoever originally owned the ring. There are unmistakable indications that the ring was worn fairly often by whomsoever the ancient owner was. But the ring is in no way“worn out” Before expressing dismay over the fact that the ring evidences some wear, you must keep in mind that the ring was produced by an artisan and sold to a patron or consumer wit

As the distillation of alcohol was not known until the fourth century BC the scents were extracted by steeping plants. Flowers or splinters of fragrant wood in oil to obtain essential oil, which would then be added to other oils or fat. The materials were placed in a piece of cloth which was wrung until the last drop of fragrance had been retrieved. Alternatively they were boiled with oil and water and the oil skimmed off. As for the oils. There was a wide choice, the most commonly used being moringa, balanos, castor oil, linseed, sesame, safflower, and, to some extent, almond and olive. According to Theophrastus, who made a thorough study of fragrant substances in an essay entitled concerning odors, balanos was the least viscous and by far the most suitable oil, followed by fresh raw olive oil and almond oil. DESCRIPTION: Hardback with Dust Jacket: 192 pages. Publisher: University of Oklahoma Press; 1995) ISBN: 0806127651. Babylon stands with Athens and Rome as a cultural ancestor of western civilization. It was founded by the people of ancient Mesopotamia. Who settled in the fertile crescent between the Tigris and the Euphrates rivers before the fourth millennium B.C. Some of the earliest experiments in agriculture and irrigation, the invention of writing, the birth of mathematics and the development of urban life all began there. Biblical associations are also numerous, from Nineveh to the Tower of Babel and the Flood. In"Babylonians" H. W. F. Saggs describes the ebb and flow in the successive fortunes of the Sumerians, Akkadians, Amorites, and Babylonians who flourished in this region. Using evidence from pottery, cuneiform tablets, cylinder seals, early architecture and metallurgy, he illuminates the myths, religion, languages, trade, politics, and warfare, as well as the legacy, of the Babylonians and their predecessors. During the twentieth century. Collaboration by archaeologists from many nations has greatly increased the range of archaeological evidence, while work by linguists has gradually unlocked the secrets of the thousands of clay tablets recovered from the area. Today the historical record for some periods of ancient Mesopotamia is substantially better than for some centuries of Europe in the Christian era. Gaps and uncertainties remain, but Babylonians conveys a rich and fascinating picture of the development of this remarkable civilization from before the beginning of the third millennium B.C.
