Various types of quartz gemstones have been used in religious and shamanistic ceremonies for thousands of years. In the ancient Greek world quartz was utilized in the Eleusinian mysteries, initiation ceremonies held every year for the cult of Demeter and Persephone based at Eleusis in ancient Greece, to produce the sacred fire by concentrating the heat of the sun to ignite wood chips. It was probably an ornamental appliqué for a belt or strap, though it could have also been an appliqué for a piece of furniture, wooden chest, or table implement. It’s hard to be certain, but it does appear as if it might have been originally fastened onto a leather strap or belt. In any event the appliqué was discarded or lost almost two thousand years ago. It shows minimal wear, and minimal porosity(surface pitting caused by burial in caustic or acidic soil conditions) Notwithstanding this evidence of usage in the ancient world. It is in wonderful condition, the engraving very sharp, and the artifact is quite handsome. Pendant, or earrings(click for more information) DETAIL: In the world of the ancient Mediterranean(including the Greeks. Romans, Persians, Hebrews, and the various Indo-European Celtic tribes) priests and sorcerers honored the sapphire above all other gems, believing that sapphire enabled them to interpret oracles and foretell the future. Sapphires have been since ancient times one of the most highly valued of all gemstones, and references to the gemstone date back to about 800 B.C. Here are two gorgeous, richly colored natural bright blue sapphire precious ... moregemstones from the Ural Mountains of Russia. The gemstones were hand crafted and faceted by a 19th century Russian artisan, part of an heritage renown for the production of the elaborate gemstones and jewelry of the Czars of Medieval, Renaissance, and Victorian Russia. The results of the artisan's efforts are two exquisite and incredibly richly colored precious gemstones with lots of fire and sparkle. They are a bright blue with a very light undertone, just a hint of green, very similar in appearance to the bright medium blue of sapphires from Ceylon and Siam(Sri Lanka and Thailand) As you can see, there some"color zoning" within the gemstones, meaning that there is some color variation within the gemstones. Nonetheless good quality blue sapphires are in high demand, and can be quite costly. Unfortunately most seemingly flawless, transparent“sapphires” sold even by the largest and most reputable retailers in the United States are synthetic(read the fine print; and the same is true of emeralds and rubies) However the Southern Ural Mountains of Russia have been producing good quality, natural sapphires for centuries.
