Very light porosity(surface pitting caused by contact with earth while buried) Professionally conserved. DETAIL: This is a very handsome. Decorative piece of ancient Roman silver ornamentation. It was probably an ornamental appliqué for a belt or strap, though it could have also been an appliqué for a piece of furniture, wooden chest, or table implement. It’s hard to be certain, but it does appear as if it might have been originally fastened onto a leather strap or belt. In any event the appliqué was discarded or lost almost two thousand years ago. It shows minimal wear, and minimal porosity(surface pitting caused by burial in caustic or acidic soil conditions) Notwithstanding this evidence of usage in the ancient world. It is in wonderful condition, the engraving very sharp, and the artifact is quite handsome. It is the type of decorative ornamentation one would have expected to find on a belt or strap employed by a Roman Soldier. Many pieces of equipment and weaponry were carried on the person of a Roman Legionnaire, many held in place with belts(and buckles) and such ornamental appliqués were quite popular. You'll note the engraved concentric circle on the center of the applique. This concentric circle was intended to provide the wearer a charm providing protection against the effects of"an evil eye" There was an ancient belief that some evil sorcerers or witches had the ability to transmit evil with ju

Ancient European Iron Age Hallstatt Bangle - 800 BC
A beautiful and well provenanced European early Celtic bangle. Dating to the Hallstatt Period(8th- 6th Century BC) With an attractive dark green patina. This wonderful piece of ancient jewellery has been expertly cast into spiraling band. Decorated in a confident style with sweeping incised patterns, it would've been worn by an elite individual as a symbol of their wealth and status. The Hallstatt period was a period of increased wealth in central Europe as powerful local chiefdoms emerged. Controlling the redistribution of luxury goods to and from the classical Mediterranean world. Their prestige is well evidenced by the remarkable affluence displayed in tombs from this period; gold plated shoes, gold-mounted drinking horns and large Greek cauldrons for alcohol consumption. Ancient European Bronze Age Pre Celtic Reworked Spear Dagger Weapon - 800 BC
A fascinating. Well provenanced and rare ancient European Bronze Age reworked dagger, dating to approximately 800 BC. Of rare and unusual form. With a long ridged handle, slender blade and prominent central rib. Unusually, this piece appears to have originally been made as a spear head, subsequently broken(possibly in battle) and reworked into a dagger. Beating marks from this process of reworking are still clearly visible. Such weapons would have been used in battle by the early Celtic peoples and their predecessors. Indeed the period to which this artefact dates was characterized by migrations and invasions of warrior led groups across Europe. The late Bronze Age appears to have been a time of widespread warfare and social upheaval, ultimately carried on the back of weapons such as this. Length: 8 ½ inches. Condition: Very good. Unrestored. ... moreProvenance: Ex-Collection of Henk Huffener(1923– 2006) A respected artist, officially honoured hero of the Dutch resistance, and successful antiques dealer, with establishments in Surrey and Kensington, England. Huffener was born in Utrecht in 1923. One of nine children. He soon became known for his artistic talents, most notably for his still lifes, portraits, and abstractionist works. Huffener, inspired by his father, also became immersed in the world of anti-fascist activism. Come the start of the war, he began traveling the Netherlands, helping Jews escape Nazi-occupied Europe by providing them with forged papers, and hiding them from their persecutors. This incredible bravery and selflessness was documented in The Other Schindlers by Agnes Grunwald-Spier(2010) and Huffener was honoured by Yad Vashem as'Righteous Among the Nations' in 1998. His wartime contributions were also commemorated posthumously in March 2010, when Prime Minister Gordon Brown awarded him the Hero of the Holocaust medal for"the service of humanity. Huffener eventually moved to England in the 1950s. Establishing his own antiques business in 1959 in Albury, Surrey. Here, his knowledg

Ancient Bronze Age Pre Celtic European Spearhead - 800 BC
A striking European Bronze Age spearhead. Dating to approximately 800 BC. With a beautiful patina, this piece is a stunningly well preserved example of its type. A very fine example. With well-formed and preserved features, symmetrical and robust mid-rib and cylindrical. Socketed with two attachment holes on either side, the spear would have been inserted into a long wooden shaft, now long perished. Such spears would have been used in battle by the early Celtic peoples and their predecessors. Indeed the period to which this artefact dates was characterized by migrations and invasions of warrior led groups across Europe. The late Bronze Age appears to have been a time of widespread warfare and social upheaval, ultimately carried on the back of weapons such as this. This piece was likely interred as part of a ritual deposit. Hoards containing ... morethese spears have been found across Europe in areas of spiritual significance such as hills, rivers and bogs. It is likely they were buried as offerings to unknown gods, they may also have been taken from defeated warriors after battle. A fascinating piece of early European weaponry. And the finest example of this type that we have seen. Length of spear: 7 ¼ inches. Condition: Excellent. With a beautiful malachite patina. Unrestored. Provenance: Ex. German private collection. Please note: This is a genuine Bronze Age spearhead. Offered for sale without preserve to promote our extensive inventory of ancient coins and antiquities. European British Bronze Age Looped Socketed Axe - 800 BC
A rare and striking early Iron Age bronze socketed axe of sompting type. Dating to between 800- 600 BC. A weapon of powerful elegance. This axe is of a form prevalent across the English Midlands during the early Iron Age; with a sub-rectangular sectioned body, subtly flaring blade and prominent, collared edge around the socket. The body is adorned with a series of cast moulded triangular symbols, far less common than the more prevalent ribbed design, usually found on axes of this type. A wooden handle would originally have been inserted into the socketed end, held in place by a cord threaded through the metal loop. Axes such as this would have been used to clear the forests of Bronze Age Europe for human habitation. They are often found in hoards throughout Britain. Some are believed to have been buried for safekeeping, whilst others are ... morebelieved to have served a votive function. Even though the majority of early Iron Age socketed axes have been discovered in metalwork hoards, axes of the sompting type are often found singly. Many of them have been found in the rivers and boglands of the English Midlands, they were likely deposited in these contexts because of connections with a watery underworld. Who exactly the gods of ancient European people were at this time is not known, but attention has been drawn to a series of carved wooden figures from wetland contexts that may be representations of divine beings. This fascinating piece encapsulates many aspects of ancient European life. From ritual and religious behaviours to the development of the crucial bronze working industry. Length: 5 1/8 inches Condition: Very good. Restored across centre. With a beautiful malachite patina. Provenance: Ex. private collection. Note: A UK/EU export licence will be required to export this item outside the United Kingdom. 1) This process is free of charge& we will submit all the documents for you. 2) In the very unlikely event the license is refused. You will be refunded in full. 3) The licence is normally granted within 2 w

Ancient European Iron Age Bronze Hallstatt Knife Blade - 800 BC
An ancient European Iron Age Halstatt bronze knife blade. Dating to 800– 600 BC. Sleek and elegant yet brutally efficient. This stunning bronze weapon must be amongst the finest examples of its type. Cast in a single piece, the blade curves subtly downwards, the upper edge decorated with thick bands of incised lines. The tang is integral, pierced with four holes for attachment to a bone or wooden handle. The early Iron Age was a period of increased wealth in western and central Europe as powerful local chiefdoms emerged. Controlling the redistribution of luxury goods to and from the classical Mediterranean world. In many senses the design of this stunning artefact reflects how the elite men of these tribes viewed themselves. Material evidence from the period suggests they were highly concerned with personal image. Through access to exotic ... moreand valuable goods they appeared as living gods to their people. The vast array of weaponry from the period hints at a violent society, one where the warrior caste were highly active in both defending their land from attack, and travelling forth to raid their enemies. So it is with this blade, there is an elegant even otherworldly form, yet this does not take away from its brutal effectiveness as a deadly weapon. Length: 10 ½ inches. Condition: Excellent. Unrestored and exhibiting a stunning patina. Pair Of Ancient European Bronze Age Bangles / Bracelets - 800 BC
A pair of Bronze Age European bangles. Dating to around 800 BC. Both in a superb state of preservation and exhibiting a beautiful deep green patina. Each formed of a single loop of thick bronze, overlapped slightly, the surface decorated with confidently inscribed lines. Judging from the size it is likely they belonged to a young woman or child. Relatively little material culture survives from the European Bronze Age. Objects such as this are amongst the few that give an idea of both the artistic traditions and physical appearance of those who inhabited the Bronze Age world. These examples are amongst the finest of their type to appear on the private market and are a wonderful remnant of the European cultural heritage. Diameter of each bangle: 3 1/8 inches.
