SIZE/MEASUREMENTS: Height: 151 millimeters(6 inches) Breadth: 81 millimeters(3 1/4 inches) Thickness: 82 millimeters(3 3/8 inches) CONDITION: Very good. No repairs but the majority of glaze is gone. A little wear and a few blemishes consistent with any decorative item which was buried for over one thousand years. Not flawless, but certainly in a better than average state of preservation– and unrepaired! Stands on its own. DETAIL: A nicely preserved clay statuette so wonderfully characteristic of Tang Dynasty statuary. Sancai. Or three-color glazes principally in yellow, green and brown was a development of the Tang Dynasty(618-907 AD) Sancai(three-colored" wares were first made for burial, using lead-based glazes that produced mottled and streaky effects in green, amber-brown, and cream, with an occasional addition of blue or black. A fascinating. Well provenanced and rare ancient European Bronze Age reworked dagger, dating to approximately 800 BC. Of rare and unusual form. With a long ridged handle, slender blade and prominent central rib. Unusually, this piece appears to have originally been made as a spear head, subsequently broken(possibly in battle) and reworked into a dagger. Beating marks from this process of reworking are still clearly visible. Such weapons would have been used in battle by the early Celtic peoples and their predecessors. Indeed the period to which this artefact dates was characterized by migrations and invasions of warrior led groups across Europe. Socketed with two attachment holes on either side, the spear would have been inserted into a long wooden shaft, now long perished. Such spears would have been used in battle by the early Celtic peoples and their predecessors. Indeed the period to which this artefact dates was characterized by migrations and invasions of warrior led groups across Europe. The late Bronze Age appears to have been a time of widespread warfare and social upheaval, ultimately carried on the back of weapons such as this. This piece was likely interred as part of a ritual deposit. Hoards containing ... morethese spears have been found across Europe in areas of spiritual significance such as hills, rivers and bogs. European British Bronze Age Looped Socketed Axe - 800 BC
A rare and striking early Iron Age bronze socketed axe of sompting type. Dating to between 800- 600 BC. A weapon of powerful elegance. This axe is of a form prevalent across the English Midlands during the early Iron Age; with a sub-rectangular sectioned body, subtly flaring blade and prominent, collared edge around the socket. The body is adorned with a series of cast moulded triangular symbols, far less common than the more prevalent ribbed design, usually found on axes of this type. A wooden handle would originally have been inserted into the socketed end, held in place by a cord threaded through the metal loop. Axes such as this would have been used to clear the forests of Bronze Age Europe for human habitation. They are often found in hoards throughout Britain. Some are believed to have been buried for safekeeping, whilst others are ... morebelieved to have served a votive function. Even though the majority of early Iron Age socketed axes have been discovered in metalwork hoards, axes of the sompting type are often found singly. Many of them have been found in the rivers and boglands of the English Midlands, they were likely deposited in these contexts because of connections with a watery underworld. Who exactly the gods of ancient European people were at this time is not known, but attention has been drawn to a series of carved wooden figures from wetland contexts that may be representations of divine beings. Each formed of a single loop of thick bronze, overlapped slightly, the surface decorated with confidently inscribed lines. Judging from the size it is likely they belonged to a young woman or child. Relatively little material culture survives from the European Bronze Age.
