ORIGIN: Ring Handcrafted in Russia. Pearl From India. 1950's or 1960's, Likely Origin Japan. Sapphires Handcrafted in Late 19th or Early 20th Century Siberian Russia. SIZE: Pearl: 9 1/2mm in diameter. Siberian Green Sapphire(4) 2mm in diameter. APPROXIMATE WEIGHT: 3.86 carats(pearl) 0.12 carats(total weight of green sapphires) NOTES: Resizing is available. u DETAIL: In some Muslim legends. The pearl is God's first act of creation. In the ancient gemstone markets of Babylon, 5,000 years ago, pearls were prized possessions believed to restore youth. A fragment of the oldest known pearl jewelry, found in the sarcophagus of a Persian princess who died in 520 BC, is displayed in the Louvre in Paris. In Islamic Scripture, the Koran specifies that the rewards of paradise include pearls. God will admit those who believe and work righteous deeds, to gardens beneath which rivers flow. They shall be adorned therein with bracelets of gold and pearls; and their garments there will be of silk. The spherical shape of some pearls also led many ancient cultures to associate this gem with the moon. To the Ancient Persians, pearls symbolized the moon and its magical powers, the moon instilling pearls with its celestial glow and mystery. Celebrating this cultural legacy here's a gorgeous. Highly polished, reflective, lustrous, creamy white pearl. This is not the typical, cheap, thinly covered Chinese cultured pearl. This is a genuine, high quality cultured pearl. We believe it was produced at Ago Bay, Japan, known for its high-quality cultured pearl production. From there it went to Southern India, famous in its own right for saltwater pearl

DESCRIPTION: Hardback with Dust Jacket: 288 pages. Publisher: Facts On File. Inc; 1996) ISBN: 0816030057. List Price $44.00] Long overshadowed by Greek mythology. Or treated peripherally in general texts on the ancient Roman world, Roman religion is finally accorded its due in this unique reference work. While perhaps most familiar in the context of Greek-influenced gods(Jupiter is to Rome what Zeus was to Greece" Roman religious life in fact encompassed a tremendous variety of deities, rites, and belief systems. From the Celtic God Abandinus to the pagan historian Zosimus, Dictionary of Roman Religion" contains more than 1,400 entries. Among the myriad of topics covered are: deities and spirits; festivals; sacrifices; temples, altars, and cult objects; burial rites; writers on religion; and historical religious events. Different religions within the Roman world. Such as Mithraism, Druidism, Judaism, and Christianity, are also discussed. Entries range from brief definitions to concise essays reflecting particularly important aspects of religious practice, and most include suggestions for further reading in addition to a complete bibliography. A glossary, 63 photographs and 65 line drawings, and extensive cross-references round out this singular perspective on religious life in the Roman world. Written by two experts in the field. The Decameron of Giovanni Boccaccio Translated by Frances Winwar- Complete and Unabridged. DESCRIPTION: Hardcover with Dust Jacket: 666 pages. Publisher: ... moreThe Modern Library; 1955) The Decameron' is a fascinating example of classic literature that remains fresh and entertaining today. Written in the mid-14th century. It concerns the first major outbreak of the black plague in Europe, which emerged in Italy in approximately 1347. Boccaccio begins, in the prologue, by stating his purpose for writing the book- namely, to entertain literate women with nothing else to do with their time. The story itself concerns ten young Florentines(seven women- Pampinea, Filomena, Neifile, Fiammetta, Elissa, Lauretta, and Emilia; and three men- Panfilo, Dioneo, and Filostrato) who flee the city in hopes of escaping the plague. To occupy themselves during this time, they tell each other stories, with each person telling one story per day to make a total of 100 stories over the course of the entire book. At the beginning of the first day, Boccaccio provides an excellent and detailed description of the plague itself. The book ends with the refugees returning to their homes, and a closing epilogue from the author. CONDITION: Shelf wear and soiling to Dust Jacket. Yellowing pages and in good condition. PLEASE SEE IMAGES BELOW FOR JACKET DESCRIPTION(S) AND FOR PAGES OF PICTURES FROM INSIDE OF BOOK. PLEASE SEE PUBLISHER. PROFESSIONAL, AND READER REVIEWS BELOW. PUBLISHER REVIEW: REVIEW: The Decameron is an entertaining series of one hundred stories written in the wake of the Black Death. Recounted by young citizens of Florence who have fled the city in order to escape the plague. These young unmarried nobles, the"beautiful people" of the age, decide to wait out the Florentine plague in their country estates, amusing each other every evening with earthy stories, some outright bawdy, others pointing to a moral. This Italian book, written in 1351, inspired Chaucer, Shakespeare, and Balzac, and remains one of the most enjoyable an

Ancient European Bronze Age Pre Celtic Reworked Spear Dagger Weapon - 800 BC
A fascinating. Well provenanced and rare ancient European Bronze Age reworked dagger, dating to approximately 800 BC. Of rare and unusual form. With a long ridged handle, slender blade and prominent central rib. Unusually, this piece appears to have originally been made as a spear head, subsequently broken(possibly in battle) and reworked into a dagger. Beating marks from this process of reworking are still clearly visible. Such weapons would have been used in battle by the early Celtic peoples and their predecessors. Indeed the period to which this artefact dates was characterized by migrations and invasions of warrior led groups across Europe. The late Bronze Age appears to have been a time of widespread warfare and social upheaval, ultimately carried on the back of weapons such as this. Length: 8 ½ inches. Condition: Very good. Unrestored. ... moreProvenance: Ex-Collection of Henk Huffener(1923– 2006) A respected artist, officially honoured hero of the Dutch resistance, and successful antiques dealer, with establishments in Surrey and Kensington, England. Huffener was born in Utrecht in 1923. One of nine children. He soon became known for his artistic talents, most notably for his still lifes, portraits, and abstractionist works. Huffener, inspired by his father, also became immersed in the world of anti-fascist activism. Come the start of the war, he began traveling the Netherlands, helping Jews escape Nazi-occupied Europe by providing them with forged papers, and hiding them from their persecutors. This incredible bravery and selflessness was documented in The Other Schindlers by Agnes Grunwald-Spier(2010) and Huffener was honoured by Yad Vashem as'Righteous Among the Nations' in 1998. His wartime contributions were also commemorated posthumously in March 2010, when Prime Minister Gordon Brown awarded him the Hero of the Holocaust medal for"the service of humanity. Ancient Bronze Age Pre Celtic European Spearhead - 800 BC
A striking European Bronze Age spearhead. Dating to approximately 800 BC. With a beautiful patina, this piece is a stunningly well preserved example of its type. A very fine example. With well-formed and preserved features, symmetrical and robust mid-rib and cylindrical. Socketed with two attachment holes on either side, the spear would have been inserted into a long wooden shaft, now long perished. Such spears would have been used in battle by the early Celtic peoples and their predecessors. Indeed the period to which this artefact dates was characterized by migrations and invasions of warrior led groups across Europe. The late Bronze Age appears to have been a time of widespread warfare and social upheaval, ultimately carried on the back of weapons such as this. This piece was likely interred as part of a ritual deposit. Hoards containing ... morethese spears have been found across Europe in areas of spiritual significance such as hills, rivers and bogs. It is likely they were buried as offerings to unknown gods, they may also have been taken from defeated warriors after battle. A fascinating piece of early European weaponry. And the finest example of this type that we have seen. Length of spear: 7 ¼ inches. Condition: Excellent. With a beautiful malachite patina. Unrestored. Provenance: Ex. German private collection. European British Bronze Age Looped Socketed Axe - 800 BC
A rare and striking early Iron Age bronze socketed axe of ‘sompting’ type. Dating to between 800- 600 BC. A weapon of powerful elegance. This axe is of a form prevalent across the English Midlands during the early Iron Age; with a sub-rectangular sectioned body, subtly flaring blade and prominent, collared edge around the socket. The body is adorned with a series of cast moulded triangular symbols, far less common than the more prevalent ribbed design, usually found on axes of this type. A wooden handle would originally have been inserted into the socketed end, held in place by a cord threaded through the metal loop. Axes such as this would have been used to clear the forests of Bronze Age Europe for human habitation. They are often found in hoards throughout Britain. Some are believed to have been buried for safekeeping, whilst others are ... morebelieved to have served a votive function. Even though the majority of early Iron Age socketed axes have been discovered in metalwork hoards, axes of the ‘sompting’ type are often found singly. Many of them have been found in the rivers and boglands of the English Midlands, they were likely deposited in these contexts because of connections with a watery underworld. Who exactly the gods of ancient European people were at this time is not known, but attention has been drawn to a series of carved wooden figures from wetland contexts that may be representations of divine beings. This fascinating piece encapsulates many aspects of ancient European life. From ritual and religious behaviours to the development of the crucial bronze working industry. Length: 5 1/8 inches Condition: Very good. Restored across centre. With a beautiful malachite patina. Provenance: Ex. private collection. Ancient European Iron Age Bronze Hallstatt Knife Blade - 800 BC
An ancient European Iron Age Halstatt bronze knife blade. Dating to 800– 600 BC. Sleek and elegant yet brutally efficient. This stunning bronze weapon must be amongst the finest examples of its type. Cast in a single piece, the blade curves subtly downwards, the upper edge decorated with thick bands of incised lines. The tang is integral, pierced with four holes for attachment to a bone or wooden handle. The early Iron Age was a period of increased wealth in western and central Europe as powerful local chiefdoms emerged. Controlling the redistribution of luxury goods to and from the classical Mediterranean world. In many senses the design of this stunning artefact reflects how the elite men of these tribes viewed themselves. Material evidence from the period suggests they were highly concerned with personal image. Through access to exotic ... moreand valuable goods they appeared as living gods to their people. The vast array of weaponry from the period hints at a violent society, one where the warrior caste were highly active in both defending their land from attack, and travelling forth to raid their enemies. So it is with this blade, there is an elegant even otherworldly form, yet this does not take away from its brutal effectiveness as a deadly weapon. Length: 10 ½ inches. Condition: Excellent. Unrestored and exhibiting a stunning patina. Provenance: Formerly in the possession of Mr. D.G. full name provided upon request to buyer) Authenticity All items are unconditionally guaranteed to be Authentic as described.
