The color purple was traditionally the color of royalty, and was also associated with the planet and the Roman God Jupiter the“Lord of Gods” of the Roman pantheon, also known as Zeus to the ancient Greeks) Consequentially Amethyst has been used since the dawn of recorded history to adorn the wealthy, as well as royalty. Ancient civilizations prized the stone more than many other gems which today enjoy more recognition and value, including sapphire, ruby, diamonds and emerald. For some time in the ancient world, amethyst was valued equally with the diamond, and only royal families were lawfully entitled to own and wear the stone. Amethyst was used extensively in the ancient Mediterranean world for carving intaglio gemstones and seals, particularly by the ancient Greeks and Romans. And in both ancient Greece and Rome rings of amethyst set in bronze were worn as charms against evil. The first century historian and naturalist Pliny wrote that if amethyst were worn round the neck on a cord made from dog's hair, it would afford the wearer protection against snakebite. Celebrating our historical legacy here's a very large. Very clean, 19th century faceted amethyst pear from the Devonian lava beds found along the coast of Angus Country, Scotland. Exported to Russia, the gemstone was hand crafted and faceted by a 19th century Russian artisan, part of an heritage renown for the production of the elaborate gemstones and jewelry of the Czars of Medie

DESCRIPTION: Hardback with Dust Jacket: ... more501 pages. Publisher: Weathervane Books; 1977) ISBN: 0517231360. This vigorous. Eloquent epic tale of valor is noted for having been written in the best English prose of the Fifteenth Century. The accompanying illustrations are, of course, a perfect example of the best illustrations of any century. The characters will be familiar: Lancelot and Guinevere, Tristan and Isolde, for this is the definitive account of the Arthurian legends, and Pollard's is the definitive abridgement. His preface says: The story of King Arthur and his knights is one of the greatest that men have ever made. Greater by far than that of Charlemagne, which had come into fashion a little earlier, greater perhaps even than the tale of Troy, already some 2,000 years old, which for some centuries it eclipsed. It is through the fifteenth century prose of Sir Thomas Mallory, in which homeliness and nobility go hand in hand, that it holds its place in our hearts. But the story itself was the outcome of the second half of the twelfth century and the beginning of the thirteenth, the days of England’s Henry II and his three turbulent sons Geoffrey, Richard Coeur de Lion, and John. In the days when the Arthurian romances were coming into existence. Violence, cruelty, and luxury were rampant. But the greatness of these evils called forth some great virtues to counter them. This story bears traces of these and is penetrated to its very core by the special virtues of days in which men were content to live dangerously, carrying their lives in their in their hands and willing to lay them down lightly rather than break the rules of the game or be faithless to work or friend. CONDITION: This is the special. But are by and large transparent, certainly eye clean. Each possesses rich blue color, not the flat black of inexpensive"midnight blue" sapphires from Siam(Thailand) There is a little color zoning, which means that if you look very carefully and closely you will see areas of different shades of blue within the gemstone. But this is quite common with sapphires, and in no way detracts from its beauty. Aside from being commonplace, the color zoning is not detectable at all except upon very close scrutiny(or photo enlargements such as these) Such good quality blue sapphires are in high demand, and can be quite costly. Chariot: From Chariot to Tank. The Astounding Rise and Fall of the World's First War Machine by Arthur Cotterell. DESCRIPTION: Hardback with Dust Jacket: 344 pages. Publisher: The Overlook Press; 2004) The chariot changed the face of ancient warfare. First in Mesopotamia. Then in Asia Minor and Egypt, charioteers came to dominate the battlefield. Its use as a war machine is graphically recounted in Indian epics and Chinese chronicles. Homer's"Iliad" tells of the attack on Troy by Greek heroes who rode in chariots. In 326 B.C. Alexander the Great faced charioteers in northern India, while in 55 B.C. Julius Caesar's forces were met by chariots on the beaches of Britain. It examines the chariot's influence on modern mechanized warfare, and its resonance in the popular imagination, from ancient art and literature to the films of Hollywood. Rich in historical anecdote and engrossing narrative. Chariot" offers riveting descriptions of the military confrontations in which the deployment of chariots heavily influenced the outcome of battles and changed the fate of countries and empires. From 1286 B.C. at Kadesh in the Eastern Mediterranean, where the troops of Ramses II overwhelmed the Hittites with 5,000 chariots; to Rome in 67 A.D. when the Emperor Nero drove his own ten-horse chariot in the Olympic Games(he fell out but still won the prize) to Constantinople in 352 A.D. when a three-day riot, ignited by a chariot race, left more than 30,000 people dead after Emperor Justinian had to send in troops to restore order; the fascinating story of the chariot provides a key to understanding the pivotal scenes and personalities that have left their marks on history.
