Scotland, known as"cairngorm" and since ancient times has been a favorite ornamental gemstone. It is the national gemstone of Scotland and has been ... moreconsidered a sacred stone for millennia, a belief dating back to the Druids. Many ancient cultures attributed many mystical properties to quartz crystals. They were particularly used in sorcery, magic, and witchcraft in part due to the"secret magical powers" evidenced by the weak electrical charge quartz crystals carry. Here are two very uncommon semi-precious gemstones from Victorian-era Scotland, specifically Mount Cairngorm. Very popular in 18th and 19th century Victorian Scotland, these gemstones are known either as“Smoky” or“Cairngorm” Quartz. Generally“crystal” clear, the smoky tone is caused by the natural radiation emanating from granite stone the quartz is exposed to while buried in the earth. These are very handsome round cut smoky quartz crystal gemstones. The faceted cut is a coarse precursor to what eventually became known in the industry as a“brilliant cut” round, the contemporary finish generally given to round diamonds. These particular specimens are completely transparent, with beautiful sparkle and luster. They are exceptionally clean, water clear, and very bright. They are a gorgeous smoky brown color. Here are two very nice quality 19th century antique hand faceted marquise cut ruby precious gemstones from Ceylon(present day Sri Lanka) Both are relatively eye clean, of higher value character ... moreas opposed to lower value translucent rubies. Of course most ruby gemstones are anywhere from lightly to heavily blemished. Most completely transparent rubies you see offered today at retail are synthetic. While this particular pair might not be absolutely flawless, to casual scrutiny they are at least near eye clean, and are definitely at the higher end of the quality spectrum. At magnification(such as these 5x images here) they are seen to possess a modest number of very faint blemishes composed of colorless crystalline material. Nonetheless, they both possess the much sought after bright blood red color which has captivated mankind for eons. To the trained eye the photo enlargements will literally shout that the gemstones have been hand-faceted. The coarseness of the 19th century faceting is considered appealing to most gemstone collectors, and is not considered a detriment. Unlike today's computer controlled machinery, the cut and finish of a gemstone such as this is the legacy of an artisan who lived two centuries ago. Such antique hand-faceted gemstones possess much greater character and appeal than today's mass-produced machine-faceted gemstones. These gemsto
