A rare Iberian seated bronze warrior. Dating to the 5th- 4th Century B.C. The nude figure sits on a thick platform. His legs together, right arm held upright and left held to the side. A quite abstract and pleasing composition, the facial features simple but powerfully executed, the thick hair swept back and the spinal groove clearly defined at the back. The attitude of this figure strongly hints that he was a warrior- his right hand likely held a spear or other weapon whilst his left may have held a shield. The Iberians were a proto-Celtic people from what is now mostly Spain and Portugal. In ancient times these peoples were regarded as fierce warriors. Often being recruited as mercenaries by the powerful civilizations to the south and east.
