European Bronze Age Looped Socketed Bag Axe - 900 BC
A rare. Striking and attractive Bronze Age bronze socketed bag axe, dating to around 900 B.C. This piece is in beautiful condition, and stands as one of the best preserved examples of its type. The axe is of a form prevalent between 1000- 800 B.C. across Europe. With curved blade edge, oval socket and loop. In antiquity, a wooden handle would have inserted into the bag-shaped socketed end and would have been held in place by a cord which would have been threaded through the metal loop. Axes such as this would have been used to clear the forests of early Europe for human habitation. They could also be used in battle and for religious purposes. As dedications. Indeed, these axes are often found in hoards throughout central Europe, where they are believed to have served a votive function. They were often deposited in rivers, springs and bogs, ... morelikely because of connections with a watery underworld. Who exactly the gods of ancient European people were at this time is not known, but attention has been drawn to a series of carved wooden figures from wetland contexts across Europe that may be representations of divine beings. This facinating piece encapsulates many aspects of ancient European life. From ritual and religious behaviors to the development of the crucial bronzeworking industry. Length: 2 5/8 inches Condition: Excellent. In wonderful condition for a piece of its age and type. Unrestored and with a beautiful olive green patina. Provenance: An extremely well provenanced piece. From the collection of James Curle(1862-1944) of Melrose, Scotland, and thence by descent. Although a lawyer by profession, Curle was an accomplished amateur archaeologist and his name remains one of the most famous in the field of Romano-British Archaeology, having excavated and published extensively in the early 1900's. From 1888-1903 Curle acquired the most magnificent collection of Nordic antiquities outside Scandinavia, eventually selling most of his pieces to the British Museum in 1921. A Rare And Early Ancient British Bronze Age Flat Axe - 2300 BC
A beautiful and rare ancient British bronze flat axe of early form. Dating to around 2300- 2000 B.C. This Bronze Age axe is of striking form. With subtly curved blade edges tapering into a long neck. Its style suggests it dates to the Mount Pleasant phase of the early Bronze Age. It was during this period that metalworking grew from its early stages into a widespread industry, initially using copper and gold but with bronze working appearing at the end. Interestingly, this bronze piece displays the form of older British axes cast in pure copper, and may therefore be a particularly early example of ancient alloying techniques. The distinctive form is complemented by an attractive deep green patina. This axe would have been forged by an itinerant craftsman. Who would have travelled long distances across the forests and farmland of ancient Britain ... moreto sell these most treasured of items. Cast from a simple one pieced open stone mold, the axe would have then been hammered into shape. Flat stone anvils and hammers are known from the graves of craftsmen dating from this period. Much early metalwork, like flintwork, required other materials to make the complete item. Bone and wooden handles for daggers and axes, and leather sheathes for edged tools would have been common, although largely now lost to us. Given its relatively small size. This axe is likely to have been used as a hand held tool, though it may have ultimately ended up being used in a religious context, as a dedication. Indeed these artefacts were often deposited in rivers, springs and bogs, likely because of connections with a watery underworld. European British Bronze Age Looped Socketed Axe - 800 BC
A rare and striking early Iron Age bronze socketed axe of sompting type. Dating to between 800- 600 BC. A weapon of powerful elegance. This axe is of a form prevalent across the English Midlands during the early Iron Age; with a sub-rectangular sectioned body, subtly flaring blade and prominent, collared edge around the socket. The body is adorned with a series of cast moulded triangular symbols, far less common than the more prevalent ribbed design, usually found on axes of this type. A wooden handle would originally have been inserted into the socketed end, held in place by a cord threaded through the metal loop. Axes such as this would have been used to clear the forests of Bronze Age Europe for human habitation. They are often found in hoards throughout Britain. Some are believed to have been buried for safekeeping, whilst others are ... morebelieved to have served a votive function. Even though the majority of early Iron Age socketed axes have been discovered in metalwork hoards, axes of the sompting type are often found singly. Many of them have been found in the rivers and boglands of the English Midlands, they were likely deposited in these contexts because of connections with a watery underworld. Who exactly the gods of ancient European people were at this time is not known, but attention has been drawn to a series of carved wooden figures from wetland contexts that may be representations of divine beings. This fascinating piece encapsulates many aspects of ancient European life. From ritual and religious behaviours to the development of the crucial bronze working industry. Length: 5 1/8 inches Condition: Very good. Restored across centre. With a beautiful malachite patina. Provenance: Ex. private collection. A Rare And Early Ancient European Bronze Age Flat Axe - 2300 BC
A beautiful and rare ancient European bronze flat axe of early form. Dating to around 2300- 2000 BC. The distinctive form is complemented by an attractive deep green patina. This axe would have been forged by an itinerant craftsman. Who would have travelled long distances across the forests and farmland of ancient Europe to sell these most treasured of items. Cast from a simple two pieced stone mold, the axe would have then been hammered into shape. Flat stone anvils and hammers are known ... morefrom the graves of craftsmen dating from this period. Much early metalwork, like flintwork, required other materials to make the complete item. Bone and wooden handles for daggers and axes, and leather sheaths for edged tools would have been common, although largely now lost to us. Given its size. This axe is likely to have been used as a hand held tool, though it may have ultimately ended up being used in a religious context, as a dedication. Indeed these artefacts were often deposited in rivers, springs and bogs, likely because of connections with a watery underworld. Who exactly the gods of Northern European people were at this time is not known, but attention has been drawn to a series of carved wooden figures from wetland contexts across Britain that may be representations of divine beings. This fascinating piece encapsulates many aspects of Bronze Age life. From ritual and religious behaviours to the birth of the crucial bronzeworking industry. Length: 6 inches Condition: Good. Some wear commensurate with an ancient artefact. Unrestored. Provenance: Ex. Collection of C. F. Funes. NYC, acquired 1960's-1980's. Frank Funes served in the US army special forces in his e

Ancient European Bronze Age Flat Chisel Axe - 2300 BC
An ancient European Bronze Age flat chisel axe. Uncovered in the Rhone Valley in the late 19th century, dating to around 2300- 2000 BC. Of a sleek. Compact form, widening only subtly at the head, with raised ridges at the sides for slotting into a wooden handle. The head of the piece does not flare as dramatically as other flat axes from the period, suggesting this tool may have been used as a chisel. Exhibiting a beautiful malachite patina. In looking at this piece. We should not see just a functional object, but an artefact of particular ritual and religious significance. The fact that it has survived in this exceptional condition is not down to chance, rather it was carefully and intentionally buried, either for safekeeping or more likely as an offering. Metal was hard to obtain in the Bronze Age, only those of relative wealth could afford ... moreit, even fewer could afford to discard it in this way. What this artefact represents is the actions and hopes of a real individual living in the Rhone Valley over four thousand years ago. They held this tool in their hands. Stared at it one last time and then and buried it into the soft earth as a precious offering to an unknown god; perhaps for luck, a good harvest or in anticipation of the birth of a child. Length: 6 ½ inches. Condition: Good. Exhibiting a beautiful patina. Unrestored. Provenance: Previously in the collection of Comtesse de Broussiere. Said to have been found by her father Julian Greau, in the Rhone Valley towards the end of 19th century. The word Stelnarth is written in ink at the back of the piece. Possibly indicating the findspot, though this is unclear. Purchased by Sumner Healey, New York, 30th April 1929. Please note; the stand pictured is the property of the photography studio and is not included in the sale price. Authenticity All items are unconditionally guaranteed to be Authentic as described. For added security we offer a full money-back guarantee if a recognized authority disputes the authenticity of any object sold. We send paper invoice

Deep flanges and the body decorated with subtle ribs. A wooden handle would originally have been inserted into the flanges, held in place by a cord threaded through the integral loop. FINE LATE BRONZE AGE CELTIC SOCKET AND LOOP AXE/SPEAR HEAD-2100BC to 750 BC
An exceptionally fine LATE BRONZE AGE axe/spearhead. This is Celtic. Possibly from the Wessex culture but later, and was found in the south of England by my father in the 1940's. In. The Bronze Age is considered to have been the period from around 2100 to 750 BC. This is from the end of that period as evidenced by the fine workmanship. The planes of the metal. a technique experts call‘linear facetted axe’ are still visible after almost 3,000 years and the patina is relatively light. It has a socket for the handle and a loop to tie it securely on.This also was generally a later refinement in the making of axe/spearheads. There is an open spot where the metal has worn through- testament to it's frequent use. PROVENANCE:My father Jon Manchip White( please refer to Wikipedia entry) A Cambridge University educated archaeologist and anthropologist, ... morespecialized in the Ancient Egyptian culture. He was offered the curator ship of the Egyptian and Assyrian Department at the British Museum upon his graduation from University but chose another path. He retained his interest though in all archeological areas and was a lifelong collector of antiquities. The dimensions are 4 1/4" long. 1 1/2" at the flat end and 1 1/4" across the socket.
