FIND LOCATION: WESTERN EUROPE CULTURE: CELTIC CIRCA: 350 BC/ 100 BC TOTAL LENGTH 180 mm BLADE High Center Rib 97 mm X 21 mm SOCKET 12 mm WEIGHT 40.3 grams CONDITION Cleaned and Conserved G/ VG This spearhead is in GOOD/ VERY GOOD condition and was Cleaned(Loose rust and dirt) and Conserved(w/Smart Coat) This style of spearhead was made by the Celts with its high center rib and 12 mm reinforced socket ring. It is solid metal with overall deterioration that can be seen in photos. The socket has a couple pieces missing from the reinforcement ring and the tip shows some deterioration. Can be seen in photos. Blade has a little deterioration on bottom corner. This spearhead was probably used on a throwing spear due to its size and weight. It would have been very lethal. To halt deterioration all dirt and loose rust was removed from this spearhead ... moreand it was coated with Smart Coat(a Polymer sealant designed for use over rust oxides) It can be easily removed if wanted. Very rare example with forged seam socket developing to a strong medial ridge flanked by the leaf shaped veins. Specifically designed to penetrate Roman mail and plate armor. About 400 BC the Celts descended from the Alps and drove the Etruscans from the Po River Valley. Thus. The rise of their culture chronologically parallels that of the Roman Empire. Of larger stature than the Romans, Celtic warriors were fierce and fearless fighters and, by 390 BC they had captured Rome. Like the Romans, they used chariots in war and subscribed to a pagan religion. Ancient British Late Iron Age Celtic Stone Carving of a Human Head - 100 BC
An enigmatic late Iron Age stone head sculpture. Dating to the 1st century BC- 1st century AD. This imposing sculpture is of characteristically stylized form. Carved with a slit mouth, defined ears and hairline. The life sized head is depicted with an intense, even discordant facial expression. The intentional simplicity and earthiness of the features are hallmarks of the type. The base appears to have been modified during the Roman period as it is inscribed in the Latin Alphabet with the letters LR. Stone carved heads such as this piece are found throughout the areas of Europe once inhabited by the Celts. They are particularly prevalent in Britain and Ireland. The head was sacred to the Celts. With a raised circular boss in the centre of each. The bosses are split into four quarters by a thick cross, with each section containing red enamel. A beautiful ancient Celtic bulls head bronze mount. Dating to between 100 BC– 100 AD. The abstracted head is characterised by a large prominent snout and open mouth. The small eyes lightly incised.
