This is one of the largest. Most beautiful, Middle Bronze Age axes we have seen in recent times. A beautiful copper alloy winged, flanged axe, dating to approximately 1400 B.C. The patination on this large Axe is exquisite- a brilliant turquoise patina. The Axe is of usual Bronze Age form. With curved blade edge and large wing like flanges. Unusually, the axe is notched at the back, where presumably the rope would have slotted in, maintaining the axe firmly in place. In antiquity. A wooden handle would have inserted snugly under the winged flanges, and would have been held in place by a thick rope. The piece was originally cast from a two-part mold. And hammered into shape- hammer marks are still visible on the body due to the exceptional preservation of the surface. An ancient European Bronze Age flat chisel axe. Uncovered in the Rhone Valley in the late 19th century, dating to around 2300- 2000 BC. Of a sleek. Compact form, widening only subtly at the head, with raised ridges at the sides for slotting into a wooden handle. The head of the piece does not flare as dramatically as other flat axes from the period, suggesting this tool may have been used as a chisel. Exhibiting a beautiful malachite patina. In looking at this piece. We should not see just a functional object, but an artefact of particular ritual and religious significance. The fact that it has survived in this exceptional condition is not down to chance, rather it was carefully and intentionally buried, either for safekeeping or more likely as an offering. Metal was hard to obtain in the Bronze Age, only those of relative wealth could afford ... moreit, even fewer could afford to discard it in this way. What this artefact represents is the actions and hopes of a real individual living in the Rhone Valley over four thousand years ago. They held this tool in their hands. From the 4th century BC. Celtic groups pushed into the Carpathian region and the Danube basin, coinciding with their movement into Italy. The Boii and Volcae were two large Celtic confederacies who generally cooperated in their campaigns. Splinter groups moved south via two major routes: one following the Danube river, another eastward from Italy. According to legend, 300,000 Celts moved into Italy and Illyria. By the 3rd century, the native inhabitants of Pannonia were almost completely Celticized. La Tene remains are found widely in Pannonia, but finds westward beyond the Tisza river and south beyond the Sava are rather sparse. These finds are deemed to have been locally produced Norican-Pannonian variation of Celtic culture. Ancient Celtic Bronze Socket Axe, Circa 1500 BC
This is a fantastic excavated ancient Celtic socket axe. It is complete and has a fine. Hard, original patina. Notable besides the obvious beautiful color is that it is totally complete including the tie loop. It also has fine line cast decorative lines on the top and bottom. This is many steps better than some of the axes that have recently appeared on ebay that have questionable grungy patina. The 3000 plus years in the ground have been good to this piece. It is 3 3/4 inches long and the opening is about an inch in diameter.

An exceptionally well preserved European prehistoric Bronze Age palstave axe. Dating to 1200- 1000 BC. An artefact of powerful elegance; with curved blade edges. An exceptionally fine LATE BRONZE AGE axe/spearhead. This is Celtic. Possibly from the Wessex culture but later, and was found in the south of England by my father in the 1940's. In. The Bronze Age is considered to have been the period from around 2100 to 750 BC. This is from the end of that period as evidenced by the fine workmanship. The planes of the metal. a technique experts call‘linear facetted axe’ are still visible after almost 3,000 years and the patina is relatively light. It has a socket for the handle and a loop to tie it securely on.This also was generally a later refinement in the making of axe/spearheads. There is an open spot where the metal has worn through- testament to it's frequent use. The Boii and Volcae were two large Celtic confederacies who generally cooperated in their campaigns.
