This is a great 18th century bowl. There is no doubt this is a very old piece. It is a heavy wood with excellent burl design. Over the years a couple ... moresmall cracks had formed and the owner, who must have loved their bow, added a wonderful iron band with iron tacking holding it in place. You can also see at some point the bowl warped, perfectly like you want to see, and the owner added a round boss of wood to bottom to make it sit stabile and flat on a table. That added boss has old collection or museum numbers to the bottom. I have had my fair share of burl bowls over the years, this one is fabulous! Measures approx.

Measures approximately 8 1/4" long, 2 1/2" in diameter across the bowl, weighs 54 grams, and has what I think is a bone handle. It has a teeeeny tiny ... morecurved "ARGENT" mark beneath a chevron hallmark, and in doing a little research, I found that this mark was used in Neuchatel, Switzerland, from the 1700's until the 1880's, and the metal is at least 812.5/1000. There is a hairline crack on the back of the handle as shown, but it is intact and sound, and otherwise in very good condition, just in need of a light polishing. A RARE FIND! Item 7-5-16-SS27.

For sale is a cane handle made by St-Cloud during the first quarter of the 18th century. This one comes attached to a wooden cane that is apparently original ... moreto it as I have found this same exact type of cane with this same style of handle at a recent cane auction and it sold for almost 2500 Dollars. The handle is softpaste porcelain and nicely hand painted with the typical under glaze blue decoration with a flower on the top part. A typical pattern all around as well. This cane handle is in great condition with some of the top clear coat glaze is worn from use but that is common on soft paste porcelain. There are some black marks on the top as well where the cane hit something dark and some of the dark color rubbed of onto the cane it seems. Should come clean if need be I would think. In really good condition for other tops I have seen/owned. It is unmarked as far as I can see since it is attached but that is the norm anyway. The handle is 2 inches tall and 1.25 inches in diameter. A rare little item from one of the best makers from the 18th century! The cane part is in good condition with some minor scratches. The bottom metal has been flattened a bit from use and the leather strap that goes through the hole in the top is new. The metal around the whole and the metal that hold the porcelain top and the wooden cane together seems to be silver. The entire cane is about 35 inches long. If you like my goodies have a look at my other auctions for a lot more top maker pieces like KPM. Sevres and so on or contact me through Ebay. Extremely popular in 18th and 19th century Scotland, amethyst retained its popularity through the 20th century. A nice quality gemstone in its times, it is more or less transparent but by no means flawless. Though generous in size, it is not a high quality amethyst by today's standards, though it is historically significant. Purple has always been associated with royalty and amethyst is no exception. It was popular with all of Europe's royalty during Renaissance and Victorian times. When seen under magnification. The coarseness of the finish of this 18th century amethyst tells us that it is obviously hand crafted. Rather than detracting from its value or allure, this is considered appealing to most collectors, who consider examples like this to be more desirable than today’s computer-controlled machine-produced gemstones.

Most natural rubies have dispersed colorless crystalline material particles within the gemstone that while not individually discernible, when dense enough will nonetheless impart a translucent"silky" appearance to the gemstone. In other words, the ruby gemstones are not transparent, rather they are a translucent, silky blood red tone. These rubies are much more common than crystal-clear specimens. Natural rubies, like sapphires and emeralds, commonly have lots of internal blemishes. So long as these blemishes are colorless, they are"harmless" commonplace, and acceptable. The dispersed colorless crystalline material changes the nature of the gemstone from transparent to translucent. However the rich"ruby red" color is still preserved, and the gemstones can be quite breathtaking in their beauty and luster. Garnet was also worn for protection when traveling, as garnet was believed to warn the wearer of approaching danger. The ancient Persians regarded garnet as a royal stone, and only royalty was allowed to possess the gemstone. According to Jewish mythology, a giant garnet provided interior lighting for Noah's Ark. It is also believed that garnet, described as“nopek” was one of the twelve gemstones described in the Bible in Exodus 28:17-20 as adorning Aaron’s breastplate, representing the twelve tribes of ancient Israel. This particular variety of garnet is of the rarer and more costly rhodolite garnet. This is very clean, crystal clear, and exquisitely colored. As you can see, ring’s band has a“bezel” composed of three supporting“legs” to which originally was probably attached a metal, engraved bezel which ultimately broke off. However it is also possible that rather than attaching a bezel by brazing it onto the band, it is also possible that a gemstone might have been attached(the Romans used bitumen and pitch as adhesives) If indeed a gemstone had been fastened to the ring, it might quite likely have been an intaglio gemstone, i.e. a carnelian or amethyst(or some other quartz gemstone) with an engraved surface capable of pressing the wearer’s“seal” into wax or lead.
