SPLENDID BRONZE ORNAMENTED CENTRAL EUROPEAN BRONZE AGE LEG RING APPROX. 700 BC
TITEL SPLENDID BRONZE ORNAMENTED CENTRAL EUROPEAN BRONZE AGE LEG RING FROM APPROX. 700 BC DESCRIPTION: SPLENDID BRONZE ORNAMENTED CENTRAL EUROPEAN BRONZE AGE LEG RING FROM APPROX. 700 BC This auction is for a wonderful and rare decorated bronze leg ring from the Central Europe Middle Bronze Age. This is a really rare artifact. It is excellent condition with no chips or scratches. It has a beautiful green patina. Comes from Germany. The diameter measures 4 ¾ inches. The Bronze Age. Evolving out of the preceding Chalcolithic period, is a fascinating moment of evolution with important economic and social changes as metallurgy develops, while stone implements are still being used and made. Mining expands with ensuing contacts and commercialization; fire is mastered and a new class of metalworkers emerges. Most of the production is composed ... moreof tools and weapons such as axes, spearheads, daggers and swords; personal ornaments such as bracelets, fibulas, torques are also made in considerable quantity. Parallel with the above, gold was sought after and beautifully fashioned, in part to answer the demands of a new warrior aristocracy. The Bronze Age smith was particularly sensitive to line and form as exemplified by his production. The chronology of this period is somewhat in flux and arbitrary, though many dates are based on sound contexts from excavation. The divisions between the Early, Middle and Late Bronze Age differ according to countries and schools of thought. WE ACCEPT PAY PAL GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR BIDDING!

European Bronze Age Looped Socketed Bag Axe - 900 BC
A rare. Striking and attractive Bronze Age bronze socketed bag axe, dating to around 900 B.C. This piece is in beautiful condition, and stands as one of the best preserved examples of its type. The axe is of a form prevalent between 1000- 800 B.C. across Europe. With curved blade edge, oval socket and loop. In antiquity, a wooden handle would have inserted into the bag-shaped socketed end and would have been held in place by a cord which would have been threaded through the metal loop. Axes such as this would have been used to clear the forests of early Europe for human habitation. They could also be used in battle and for religious purposes. As dedications. Indeed, these axes are often found in hoards throughout central Europe, where they are believed to have served a votive function. They were often deposited in rivers, springs and bogs, ... morelikely because of connections with a watery underworld. Who exactly the gods of ancient European people were at this time is not known, but attention has been drawn to a series of carved wooden figures from wetland contexts across Europe that may be representations of divine beings. This facinating piece encapsulates many aspects of ancient European life. From ritual and religious behaviors to the development of the crucial bronzeworking industry. Length: 2 5/8 inches Condition: Excellent. In wonderful condition for a piece of its age and type. Unrestored and with a beautiful olive green patina. Provenance: An extremely well provenanced piece. From the collection of James Curle(1862-1944) of Melrose, Scotland, and thence by descent. Although a lawyer by profession, Curle was an accomplished amateur archaeologist and his name remains one of the most famous in the field of Romano-British Archaeology, having excavated and published extensively in the early 1900's. From 1888-1903 Curle acquired the most magnificent collection of Nordic antiquities outside Scandinavia, eventually selling most of his pieces to the British Museum in 1921. Ancient European Bronze Age Pre Celtic Reworked Spear Dagger Weapon - 800 BC
A fascinating. Well provenanced and rare ancient European Bronze Age reworked dagger, dating to approximately 800 BC. Of rare and unusual form. With a long ridged handle, slender blade and prominent central rib. Unusually, this piece appears to have originally been made as a spear head, subsequently broken(possibly in battle) and reworked into a dagger. Beating marks from this process of reworking are still clearly visible. Such weapons would have been used in battle by the early Celtic peoples and their predecessors. Indeed the period to which this artefact dates was characterized by migrations and invasions of warrior led groups across Europe. The late Bronze Age appears to have been a time of widespread warfare and social upheaval, ultimately carried on the back of weapons such as this. Length: 8 ½ inches. Condition: Very good. Unrestored. ... moreProvenance: Ex-Collection of Henk Huffener(1923– 2006) A respected artist, officially honoured hero of the Dutch resistance, and successful antiques dealer, with establishments in Surrey and Kensington, England. Huffener was born in Utrecht in 1923. One of nine children. He soon became known for his artistic talents, most notably for his still lifes, portraits, and abstractionist works. Huffener, inspired by his father, also became immersed in the world of anti-fascist activism. Come the start of the war, he began traveling the Netherlands, helping Jews escape Nazi-occupied Europe by providing them with forged papers, and hiding them from their persecutors. This incredible bravery and selflessness was documented in The Other Schindlers by Agnes Grunwald-Spier(2010) and Huffener was honoured by Yad Vashem as'Righteous Among the Nations' in 1998. His wartime contributions were also commemorated posthumously in March 2010, when Prime Minister Gordon Brown awarded him the Hero of the Holocaust medal for"the service of humanity. Huffener eventually moved to England in the 1950s. Establishing his own antiques business in 1959 in Albury, Surrey. Here, his knowledg

Ancient Bronze Age Pre Celtic European Spearhead - 800 BC
A striking European Bronze Age spearhead. Dating to approximately 800 BC. With a beautiful patina, this piece is a stunningly well preserved example of its type. A very fine example. With well-formed and preserved features, symmetrical and robust mid-rib and cylindrical. Socketed with two attachment holes on either side, the spear would have been inserted into a long wooden shaft, now long perished. Such spears would have been used in battle by the early Celtic peoples and their predecessors. Indeed the period to which this artefact dates was characterized by migrations and invasions of warrior led groups across Europe. The late Bronze Age appears to have been a time of widespread warfare and social upheaval, ultimately carried on the back of weapons such as this. European British Bronze Age Looped Socketed Axe - 800 BC
A rare and striking early Iron Age bronze socketed axe of sompting type. Dating to between 800- 600 BC. A weapon of powerful elegance. This axe is of a form prevalent across the English Midlands during the early Iron Age; with a sub-rectangular sectioned body, subtly flaring blade and prominent, collared edge around the socket. The body is adorned with a series of cast moulded triangular symbols, far less common than the more prevalent ribbed design, usually found on axes of this type. A wooden handle would originally have been inserted into the socketed end, held in place by a cord threaded through the metal loop. Axes such as this would have been used to clear the forests of Bronze Age Europe for human habitation. They are often found in hoards throughout Britain. Some are believed to have been buried for safekeeping, whilst others are ... morebelieved to have served a votive function. Even though the majority of early Iron Age socketed axes have been discovered in metalwork hoards, axes of the sompting type are often found singly. The bodies decorated in a confident style with exuberant incised patterns, so characteristic of European early Iron age art. The high quality of craftsmanship suggests they would have been worn by an elite individual as a symbol of their wealth and status. Controlling the redistribution of luxury goods to and from the classical Mediterranean ... moreworld. Many of these rulers would have been seen as demi-gods by other members of their tribe and their prestige is well evidenced by the remarkable affluence displayed in tombs from the period; gold plated shoes, gold-mounted drinking horns and large Greek cauldrons for alcohol consumption. These elites clearly had a taste for precious metals and Mediterranean wines. Celtic populations were said by Greek and Roman writers to favour ostentatious ornaments to denote their high rank, and these striking artefacts would have served just such a purpose. A Rare And Early Ancient European Bronze Age Flat Axe - 2300 BC
A beautiful and rare ancient European bronze flat axe of early form. Dating to around 2300- 2000 BC. This Bronze Age axe is of striking form. With subtly curved blade edges tapering into a long neck. Its style suggests it dates to the Mount Pleasant phase of the early Bronze Age. It was during this period that metalworking grew from its early stages into a widespread industry, initially using copper and gold but with bronze working appearing at the end. The distinctive form is complemented by an attractive deep green patina. This axe would have been forged by an itinerant craftsman. Who would have travelled long distances across the forests and farmland of ancient Europe to sell these most treasured of items. Cast from a simple two pieced stone mold, the axe would have then been hammered into shape. Flat stone anvils and hammers are known ... morefrom the graves of craftsmen dating from this period. Much early metalwork, like flintwork, required other materials to make the complete item. Bone and wooden handles for daggers and axes, and leather sheaths for edged tools would have been common, although largely now lost to us. Given its size. This axe is likely to have been used as a hand held tool, though it may have ultimately ended up being used in a religious context, as a dedication. Indeed these artefacts were often deposited in rivers, springs and bogs, likely because of connections with a watery underworld. Who exactly the gods of Northern European people were at this time is not known, but attention has been drawn to a series of carved wooden figures from wetland contexts across Britain that may be representations of divine beings. This fascinating piece encapsulates many aspects of Bronze Age life. From ritual and religious behaviours to the birth of the crucial bronzeworking industry. Length: 6 inches Condition: Good. Ancient European Bronze Age Flat Chisel Axe - 2300 BC
An ancient European Bronze Age flat chisel axe. Uncovered in the Rhone Valley in the late 19th century, dating to around 2300- 2000 BC. Of a sleek. Compact form, widening only subtly at the head, with raised ridges at the sides for slotting into a wooden handle. The head of the piece does not flare as dramatically as other flat axes from the period, suggesting this tool may have been used as a chisel. Exhibiting a beautiful malachite patina. In looking at this piece. We should not see just a functional object, but an artefact of particular ritual and religious significance. The fact that it has survived in this exceptional condition is not down to chance, rather it was carefully and intentionally buried, either for safekeeping or more likely as an offering. Metal was hard to obtain in the Bronze Age, only those of relative wealth could afford ... moreit, even fewer could afford to discard it in this way. What this artefact represents is the actions and hopes of a real individual living in the Rhone Valley over four thousand years ago. They held this tool in their hands. Stared at it one last time and then and buried it into the soft earth as a precious offering to an unknown god; perhaps for luck, a good harvest or in anticipation of the birth of a child. Length: 6 ½ inches. Condition: Good. Exhibiting a beautiful patina. Unrestored. Provenance: Previously in the collection of Comtesse de Broussiere. Said to have been found by her father Julian Greau, in the Rhone Valley towards the end of 19th century. The word Stelnarth is written in ink at the back of the piece. Possibly indicating the findspot, though this is unclear. Purchased by Sumner Healey, New York, 30th April 1929. Ancient European Iron Age Bronze Hallstatt Knife Blade - 800 BC
An ancient European Iron Age Halstatt bronze knife blade. Dating to 800– 600 BC. Sleek and elegant yet brutally efficient. This stunning bronze weapon must be amongst the finest examples of its type. Cast in a single piece, the blade curves subtly downwards, the upper edge decorated with thick bands of incised lines. The tang is integral, pierced with four holes for attachment to a bone or wooden handle. The early Iron Age was a period of increased wealth in western and central Europe as powerful local chiefdoms emerged. Controlling the redistribution of luxury goods to and from the classical Mediterranean world. In many senses the design of this stunning artefact reflects how the elite men of these tribes viewed themselves. Material evidence from the period suggests they were highly concerned with personal image. Through access to exotic ... moreand valuable goods they appeared as living gods to their people. The vast array of weaponry from the period hints at a violent society, one where the warrior caste were highly active in both defending their land from attack, and travelling forth to raid their enemies. So it is with this blade, there is an elegant even otherworldly form, yet this does not take away from its brutal effectiveness as a deadly weapon. Length: 10 ½ inches. Condition: Excellent. Rare Ancient European Bronze Age Armilla - 1000 BC
An ancient European Bronze Age armilla of extremely rare form. Dating to around 1000 BC. A heavy piece of metal. Cast from a single mould into a heart shape. The body adorned with series of deep incised lines, which appear like decorative scars on the surface of the metal. There is nothing frivolous about this piece, its sturdy simplicity adds to its arresting visual appeal. The widespread distribution of bronze artefacts from the late Bronze Age provides evidence for the innumerable journeys made and the exchanges enacted. The distribution and possession of this precious resource was under the control of powerful elites. As such. This piece would have been worn as part of a striking attire to emphasise high status within society. The patterns of wear on the surface suggest that, unlike many examples which were created for deposition only, ... morethis example was worn and treasured before finally being offered to the gods. Diameter: 2 ¾ inches. Condition: Very good. Unrestored. Provenance: From a 19th Century collection of a Victorian gentleman. Cambridgeshire, passed by descent to the previous owner. European bronze age 100% genuine RAPIER BLADE- CELTIC SWORD
A 100% original Celtic bronze age rapier sword. This is a UK river find. I have owned this sword for many years- it is only for sale to fund the purchase of a Viking sword that is very expensive! This is Celtic, the final refinement of bronze age casting where the skills had been refined enough to make a rapier blade. It is a super dark gold patina colour to the metal, it has not been cleaned at all since it was excavated, it is also complete with the tip which is almost always broken off these types of blades. The tang is broken, only@ 1 inch remains, this would have been a flat strip that could very easily be restored but I havn't had it fixed as I prefer to leave my pieces as found. The blade is not flat, it is the better formed type with a raised central rib for strength, this form of raised rib enabled a longer blade to be cast and ... moreadded to the ridged form of the blade, these rapier blades did not flex they were primarily a stabbing weapon. If you Google bronze age swords there is a lot of information out there and pictures of very similar examples in museums across Europe. This is museum quality, the rapier Celtic swords are rarer than the earlier broader bladed types. The total length of this is@ 28 1/4 inches, the tang may have extended a further 3-4 inches. If you have this restored then it would be easy to recreate a grip, it is a superb example of this type of Celtic metal work- it is guaranteed to be 100% original with no restoration at all, I have listed it up at a very sensible price- I have owned this for many years and I'm not desperate to sell but I'm raising some funds for a Viking piece which I really want! I have 3 other museum quality ancient blades listing up this week SHIPPING AND PAYMENT FOR THIS ITEM NEEDS TO BE DISCUSSED WITH THE BUYER. WE SHIP WORLDWIDE- 1. PLEASE CONTACT US IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS ABOUT THE ITEM. SHIPPING OPTIONS OR PAYMENT FOR YOUR’ PURCHASE. 2. SHIPPING COSTS VARY. A pair of Bronze Age European bangles. Dating to around 800 BC. Both in a superb state of preservation and exhibiting a beautiful deep green patina. Each formed of a single loop of thick bronze, overlapped slightly, the surface decorated with confidently inscribed lines. Judging from the size it is likely they belonged to a young woman or child. Relatively little material culture survives from the European Bronze Age. Objects such as this are amongst the few that give an idea of both the artistic traditions and physical appearance of those who inhabited the Bronze Age world. These examples are amongst the finest of their type to appear on the private market and are a wonderful remnant of the European cultural heritage. Diameter of each bangle: 3 1/8 inches. Ancient European Bronze Age Protective Duck Amulet - 1200 BC
An ancient European Bronze Age duck pendant. Dating to around 1200– 1000 BC. The body of the animal is abstracted and reduced to simple lines. As is often the case with Bronze Age European depictions of sacred birds. Standing on two stalk-like legs, the long slender neck rises at a right angle from the body, the head with two watchful eyes, the tail feathers fanning outwards. With a loop at the top for attachment to a necklace. Pendants and protective amulets from the European Bronze Age are rare. This cast bronze example is a fascinating remnant of spiritual beliefs from the period. Ducks appear to have been a highly important animal in the Bronze Age world; they are often found as attachments to cauldrons and wagons from high status deposits. Scholars have posited that the animal may have been seen as a‘messenger’ with the ability to pass ... morebetween this world and the next. Height: 2 inches. Condition: Very good. Heavy Ancient European Bronze Age Celtic Flat Axe - 2000 BC
An ancient European Bronze Age flat axe. Dating to around 2000 BC. With a pleasingly even and compact form. This flat axe is fantastically well preserved compared to the majority that appear on the market. Widening only subtly at the head, with raised ridges at the sides for slotting into a wooden handle. In looking at this piece. We should not see just a functional object, but an artefact of particular ritual and religious significance. The fact that it has survived in this exceptional condition is not down to chance, rather it was carefully and intentionally buried, either for safekeeping or more likely as an offering. Metal was hard to obtain in the Bronze Age, only those of relative wealth could afford it, even fewer could afford to discard it in this way. Length: 3 3/4 inches. Condition: Very good. These highly artistic torcs are amongst the most magnificent finds from the period. Europe in the late Bronze Age was a vibrant place. A place of innovative energy and mobility, where exchange networks stretched from the high Alpine passes of northern Italy to the frozen shores of the Baltic. This piece was forged during an era in which ambitious young men travelled throughout Europe to explore the wider world. Echoes of this martial culture resound through the works of Homer. Ancient European Bronze Age Jewelry Spiral Pendant Brooch - 1000 BC
A beautifully preserved central European Bronze Age brooch. Dating to around 1000 BC. This stunning piece is a wonderful example of the flowing, spiral forms that dominated late Bronze Age metalworking across Europe. The piece has been expertly cast into two conjoined spirals of wired disc. Each meeting in a tight band at the centre and hammered into shape. The late Bronze Age in Europe saw a flourishing of jewellery made in this style. The result is highly arresting in its simple, yet striking form. As opposed to being purely decorative, it is likely this motif had further ritual or supernatural connotations which are now lost to us. The late Bronze Age was an age of increased wealth in central Europe as powerful local chiefdoms emerged. Controlling the redistribution of luxury goods to and from the classical Mediterranean world. Their prestige ... moreis well evidenced by the remarkable affluence displayed in tombs from the period; gold plated shoes, gold-mounted drinking horns and large cauldrons for alcohol consumption. The elites clearly had a taste for precious metals and Mediterranean wines. European populations were said by Greek writers to favour ostentatious ornaments to denote their high rank, and this striking artefact would have served just such a purpose. Length: 2 7/8 inches. Condition: Excellent. Beautifully preserved and unrestored. Provenance: Formerly in the collection of Mr. Donovan. Acquired 1980's. Please note: This is a genuine Bronze Age artefact. Ancient European Bronze Age Urnfield Culture Wheel Amulet / Pendant - 1200 BC
An extremely rare Bronze Age European Urnfield Culture bronze wheel pendant. Dating to around 1200- 1000 BC. Cast in a single piece in the form of an abstract wheel. With two arms reaching out below and an loop for attachment to a necklace at the top. The Urnfield Culture was one of rich ritual symbolism. And, at its heart, lay the wheel. Europe during this period was a vibrant place; commodities and people explored the continent at a rate never before seen and with them flowed ideas. The symbolism of the wheel drawn chariot could be found on the stelae of southern Iberia, carved into the mountain passes of northern Italy and on the shores of southern Sweden. Its meaning is not entirely clear. But some scholars have posited that to the people of Bronze Age Europe, the wheel represented the journey. Perhaps the journey through life, the exploratory ... morespirit that ran through Urnfield society or even the journey of the sun across the sky. What we do know is that to the individual who wore this pendant, it was an image of immense power, it now stands as a rare remnant of ancient European art and beliefs. For further reading on the subject. Please consult: Cunliffe. B. 2008. Europe Between the Oceans. Yale University Press: London. Diameter: 2 3/4 inches. Condition: Very good. Unrestored. Superb Prehistoric European Bronze Age Palstave Axe - 1200 BC
An exceptionally well preserved European prehistoric Bronze Age palstave axe. Dating to 1200- 1000 BC. An artefact of powerful elegance; with curved blade edges. Deep flanges and the body decorated with subtle ribs. A wooden handle would originally have been inserted into the flanges, held in place by a cord threaded through the integral loop. It is extremely rare to find an example such as this so well preserved, particularly the outer edges of the blade and the loop, which are most often broken off. In looking at this piece. We should not see just a functional object, but an artefact of particular ritual and religious significance. The fact that it has survived in this exceptional condition is not down to chance, rather it was carefully and intentionally buried, either for safekeeping or more likely as an offering. Metal was hard to obtain ... morein the Bronze Age, only those of relative wealth could afford it, even fewer could afford to discard it in this way. What this artefact represents is the actions and hopes of a real individual living over three thousand years ago. They held this tool in their hands. Stared at it one last time and then and buried it into the soft earth as a precious offering to an unknown god; perhaps for luck, a good harvest or in anticipation of the birth of a child. Valuable Ancient European Bronze Age Spiral Fibula Brooch Sculpture - 1000 BC
A large and beautifully preserved central European Bronze Age spiral fibula. Dating to 800- 700 BC. The stunning form and symmetry of this fibula elevates it from a simple brooch to a decorative artwork of great quality. A highly decorative and extremely fine ancient display piece. One of the finest and best preserved Bronze Age spiral fibula we have handled. The piece has been expertly forged into two conjoined spirals of wired disc, meeting in a pair of tight coils at the centre which form a figure of eight at the back. The original pin and catch plate are still fully intact and in place. Very little art from the European Bronze Age survives to us today. Yet artefacts such as this give us an idea of the motifs that would have been ubiquitous in daily life; carved into wooden objects and tattooed onto bodies. The conjoined spiral is amongst ... morethe oldest of images from ancient Europe. Prevalent as early as the Neolithic, and likely had significant ritual or supernatural connotations which are now lost to us. Mounted in this way. The artefact becomes not just a functional item of everyday use, but a distinctly sculptural piece of Bronze Age art redolent with meaning. Height mounted: 6 1/2 inches. Height alone: 4 1/8 inches. Condition: Excellent. A high quality example preserved with the original pin. Unrestored. Please note that this piece will arrive with a beautiful. Top quality, bespoke bronze stand, produced by Colin Bowles, mount maker to Her Majesty Elizabeth II, Queen of the United Kingdom. Provenance: Ex. British private collection. 1980’s. Ancient European Prehistoric Bronze Age Looped Winged Axe - 1400 BC
A rare and striking Bronze Age bronze looped and winged axe with an interesting provenance. Dating to around 1400 BC. A weapon of powerful elegance. This axe is of a form prevalent across Europe during the Bronze Age; of classic form, with curved blade edge and large wing like flanges. A wooden handle would originally have been inserted into the flanges, held in place by a cord threaded through the metal loop. Axes such as this would have been used to clear the forests of Bronze Age Europe for human habitation. They are often found in hoards throughout Europe. Some are believed to have been buried for safekeeping, whilst others are believed to have served a votive function. Many of them have been found in rivers and boglands, they were likely deposited in these contexts because of connections with a watery underworld. Who exactly the gods ... moreof ancient European people were at this time is not known, but attention has been drawn to a series of carved wooden figures from wetland contexts that may be representations of divine beings. This fascinating piece encapsulates many aspects of ancient European life. From ritual and religious behaviours to the development of the crucial bronze working industry. Length: 4 ½ inches Condition: Very good. Unrestored. Provenance: From the JWH Armory collection. Inventory number 238.53, on display at the museum for many years and originally purchased from S.
