Relatively little material culture survives from the European Bronze Age. 1700's True Vintage Carved Cane/Walking Stick
Awesome True Vintage Antique Carved Cane/Walking Stick. 41 and 1/2 inches long. Very straight, approx. 1 inch thick at bottom, Carved Head with beard and long hair in back measures about 7 inches long. Handle extends out from back of head approx. 6 inches. This was an estate sale piece. The woman who sold it to me was in her late 80's and she said it belonged to her Great Grandfather who lived in Northern Ireland and that she thinks it was handed down to him. So it may be even older than we know. Her grandfather kept in in an old Crock by the door and when he died in the 1930's her Father inherited it. She said the children were NEVER allowed to even touch it! This piece is quite special, everyone who sees it handles it like it is The crown Jewels! I had an antiquities dealer look at it and he said it may even be from the 1600's. ... moreIt is in great condition. But definitely shows its age, there are a couple of cracks near the bottom, but they don't seem to affect the strength of the cane, there is no"rattling" or looseness to it. It feels very sturdy. If this was from my heritage I can't imagine selling it! Hope someone else finds delight in it. It is really very interesting to look at it. ANTIQUE ENGLISH patch box cranberry red enamel original mirror
This PATCH Box is truly like a jewel. It is an ANTIQUE"guilloche" enamel hinged oval box with the original mirror in the lid. It is cranberry red with 2 white enamel rings on the top the inner ring encircling a stylized chrysanthemum design. There is a rope design around the edge of the lid and a similar rope design around the mirror inside. The sides of the box are divided into 9 guilloche enamel panels showing alternating dark and light lines which design moves as you turn the box. The enamelling is done on bronze or copper. There is a mark on the bottom 109/45 S/T. This type of box was commonly used in the 1700 and 1800 period to hold beauty patches and therefore called a patch box. Or sometimes used for a snuffbox. GUILLOCHE is a metal work method of creating a design in the metal of the item and then enamelling up to five layers ... moreof glass overtop. In this manner the design shows through the enamel. The animal is shown standing; the limbs, body and neck are wonderfully lithe, the shape of the head is reduced to a mere suggestion, the sleek tail hangs down between the legs, seemingly platted. A small loop is attached to the front of the body, suggesting the piece may have been worn as a pendant or mounted as an attachment. The stunning form and symmetry of this fibula elevates it from a simple brooch to a decorative artwork of great quality. One of the finest and best preserved Bronze Age spiral fibula we have handled. The piece has been expertly forged into two conjoined spirals of wired disc, meeting in a pair of tight coils at the centre which form a figure of eight at the back. The original pin and catch plate are still fully intact and in place. Very little art from the European Bronze Age survives to us today. Yet artefacts such as this give us an idea of the motifs that would have been ubiquitous in daily life; carved into wooden objects and tattooed onto bodies. A particularly well preserved example of an Anglo-Saxon enamelled bronze hanging bowl mount. Dating to around 600– 650 AD. Renowned for their sleek, elegant beauty and enamelwork, hanging bowl escutcheons are widely considered to be amongst the most artistic objects from the early British Dark Ages. The bronze mount in the form of a long necked bird. Perhaps a cormorant, with an elliptical body small semi-circular wings. Formed with a hollow underside and curved neck, forming a hook by which the ornate bowl would have been suspended. The style of the La Tène derived interlacing patterns across the body might be termed“Celtic” but the red enamelling, so wonderfully preserved on this example, is distinctly Romano-British in style. Hanging bowls were significant items of prestige in 6th- 7th century Britain.
