Primitive Display of Antique Blacksmith Forged Iron Nails Tall to Very Small I didn’t have a lot of time to shop this week because of visiting relatives. But I found some awesome pieces regardless, and I’ll be going to my favorite flea market this weekend, so I’ll have a boatload of items, fingers crossed, that will be new. I appreciate your business! Here's one of my favorites this week- so simple and special. What I have is a made piece for display. I do not know who made it. But what they did is take a variety of antique, hand forged(blacksmith made) iron nails and pound them into a finished block of wood for display. The nails are pounded in, so you know- not just sitting in holes where you can take them out easily. What makes it so unique is that the nails vary from very tall to very small- the tallest being 5 1/2" with a 1/2" ... morehead and the smallest being 5/8" with about 1/8" head. The nails have a very dark patina from age, and show dark spots of surface rust all over too. The maker must have shellaced them for protection, as they have a semi-glossy appearance. The base is made from solid hard wood, and it measures 4 7/8" wide and 3 3/4" deep. The piece stands 7 7/8" tallest to the tallest nail at the center of the back. It is in excellent solid and sturdy condition. It's unsigned by the maker, so I do not know its history. The wood base shows minor wear, scratches and scraping. I'm showing a shallow nick at the back left side in photos 12& 13. I do think that's original to the making, though, as it is finished like the rest of the block. It weighs 1 1/4 lbs. It's dusty, espeically the block, and could use a good cleaning- I have not cleaned or messed with the as found patina in any way. Don'tcha wish they could talk? Up for auction is a Vintage Antique Lot of Steel/Iron Spikes Nails. These were designed for woodworking and possibly railroad work. There is one spike that is a little over 14" in length. One is 5 1/2" 4 are 4" 10 are 2 1/2" and 18 are 1 1/2" These are very old primitive spikes/nails. Most have rectangle heads except 8 of the 1 1/2" have an oval shaped head. Howdy. Dad has a number of hand forged items I will be listing over the next couple weeks. This listing is for a huge spike he got from a mine here in the Black Hills of South Dakota. Our educated guess puts it from the 1800's. It is huge and rusty. Weighing in at 7 pounds 10 7/8th ounces! It measures 21& 3/4 inches long! Please ask questions before bidding or buying!
