In Chapter One"An Historical Overview" Page 10, there is a photograph showing this button type along with a description as follows: Small jewel-like breeches buttons with foil reflecting through the heavy glass mounted in a silver back; used at the knee of the breeches, c. 1770" It's hard to tell from these close up photographs. But the earrings do sparkle like little jewels when seen from a normal viewing distance. Inside each button is a tiny design of twisted gold wirework set on a black background with red flashing along the edges. A silver wire was added to the top so that these could be wore as earrings. The buttons measure approximately 3/8 inches(10 mm) in both length and width. The top of the wire to the base of the earring measures approximately 3/4 inches.
