An ancient Roman bronze cosmetic'woad grinder' palette. Dating to approximately 100 A.D. The palette of curved form. Hollowed in the center and terminating at one end with a spherical knob and the other with a loop, for attachment to a neck chain in antiquity. During the Celtic period in Britain. A biennial herb known as woad was cultivated for the blue dye it produced when crushed. The ancient Britons painted their naked bodies with this dye in order to make themselves more fearsome and intimidating on the battlefield. An ancient Celtic Iron Age'Horned Man' face mount. Dating to between 50 BC– 100 AD. The pleasing swirls that compose the face recall classic Celtic vegetal decorative styles. The deep saucer-like eyes draw the viewer in. Whilst the subtly curving horns add a further sense of otherworldliness to the already abstract features. Incisions in the centre of the forehead and beneath the eyes would likely have originally contained inlays. The horned man is often associated with the god Cernunnos(the horned one) A deity common across Celtic western Europe but particularly affiliated with the British Brigantes tribe. The Brigantes, whose name roughly translates as the homage takers, were a federation of smaller clans ruled over by a single royal house. ANCIENT CELTIC IRON AGE STONE SCULPTURE ENIGMATIC CARVED HEAD BRITAIN IRELAND
Estate find in Upstate NY. I have no history of the piece. It was covered in a thick layer of dust when I got it. So It wasn't made yesterday. It is solid stone. Carved. Looks alot like the celtic carvings I saw when I researched/Googled it. Weighs 24 lbs 14 ounces. It measures about 16" tall, 8" wide at the shoulders and head is about 5" front to back. What you see is what you get.

A beautiful British Celtic decorative bronze fitting. Dating to the late Iron Age, 100 BC- 43 AD. Discovered in Northamptonshire on 1st June 2008. With a raised circular boss in the centre of each. The bosses are split into four quarters by a thick cross, with each section containing red enamel. On the reverse of the fitting is a bar intended to attach the piece to a belt or strap. The eye is one of the most recognisable ancient Celtic motifs. And is likely to have been considered an auspicious and protective symbol. This example is in unusually good condition for artefacts of its type and is an excellent example of this particular decorative style. Judging from the location in which ... moreit was found. This item is likely to have been worn by a member of the Corieltauvi tribe, whose territory ran across a swathe of the English East Midlands.
