NEW Celtic Britain Before Rome 7thC BC Iron Age Medieval Scotland Wales Ireland
Britain Before the Conquest: Celtic Britain by Lloyd Laing. DESCRIPTION: Hardback with Dust Jacket: 190 pages. Publisher: Routledge& Kegan Paul; 1990) ISBN: 0710001312. Of all the ancient people of Europe. The Celts stand out as one of the most intriguing. In“Celtic Britain” Laing traces the history of the Celts and Celtic culture from the arrival of the first scattered groups of settlers in Britain in the 7th century B.C. to the development of the kingdoms of medieval Scotland and Wales. Although a Celtic culture continued to flourish independently throughout the Roman and Saxon periods, influences from outside, particularly those of Christianity, began to permeate Celtic society. Dr. Laing. Who work on the later Celts has won wide critical acclaim, introduces new material on the growth of a specifically Celtic Christianity, especially ... morein Ireland and Scotland. He concludes by examining the“myth” of the Celts in modern times. Contents/Chapter Headings include: 1) Introduction– The Celts in Europe. 2) Iron Age Britain. 3) The Roman Interlude. 4) The Dark Ages. 5) Epilogue– Celtic Twilight. 6) The Best of Celtic Britain. CONDITION: New. Never read. PLEASE SEE IMAGES BELOW FOR SAMPLE PAGES FROM INSIDE OF BOOK. PLEASE SEE PUBLISHER. PROFESSIONAL, AND READER REVIEWS BELOW. PUBLISHER REVIEW: REVIEW: Lloyd Laing is Senior Lecturer in Medieval Archaeology at Liverpool University. Author of“The Archaeology of Late Celtic Britain and Ireland: 400-1200 A.D. As well as other books on archaeology, he has directed excavations in various parts of Britain, and has contributed many papers to archaeological journals. This is the second in the five volume series. Britain Before the Conquest: An Archaeological History of the British Isles 1500 B.C. 1066 A.D. The early history of British society presents a recurring theme of conquest and subsequent cultural fusion, a subtle and complex pattern which can only be revealed by using many sources, both historical and archaeological. There is no comprehensive study of these

Ancient Celtic Iron Age - Roman Bronze Cosmetic Woad Grinder - 100 AD
An ancient Roman bronze cosmetic'woad grinder' palette. Dating to approximately 100 A.D. The palette of curved form. Hollowed in the center and terminating at one end with a spherical knob and the other with a loop, for attachment to a neck chain in antiquity. During the Celtic period in Britain. A biennial herb known as woad was cultivated for the blue dye it produced when crushed. Ancient British Late Iron Age Celtic Stone Carving of a Human Head - 100 BC
An enigmatic late Iron Age stone head sculpture. Dating to the 1st century BC- 1st century AD. This imposing sculpture is of characteristically stylized form. Carved with a slit mouth, defined ears and hairline. The life sized head is depicted with an intense, even discordant facial expression. The intentional simplicity and earthiness of the features are hallmarks of the type. The base appears to have been modified during the Roman period as it is inscribed in the Latin Alphabet with the letters LR. Stone carved heads such as this piece are found throughout the areas of Europe once inhabited by the Celts. They are particularly prevalent in Britain and Ireland. The head was sacred to the Celts. Who believed(as many did throughout antiquity) that it housed the soul. They appear to have had huge significance in Celtic polytheistic practices, ... moreit is thought that there may even have been a cult of the human head, possibly revolving around headhunting. Certainly it is clear that the pre-Christian Celts placed an almost totemic value on severed heads. The Roman historian Diodoros Sikulos emphasised their value within Celtic warrior society, asserting that a Celt would not sell the embalmed head of his enemy for any price, claiming that he has no need of gold when he had such an obvious emblem of his courage and skill as a warrior. The heads were kept, carefully preserved in chests, and were removed to be put on display for guests in the warrior’s home. This reverence for the enemy’s severed head is much more than the mere tribal barbarism the Romans took it to be, it was obviously a ritual of both cultic and social significance. There are a multitude of theories on what stone heads such as this piece are meant to represent. Though one leading theory is that they depict dieties from the Celtic Pantheon. Indeed, studies have found that these carvings are often found in the vicinity of ancient religious centres and monuments. Such places formed the centre for local communities celebrating important festivals, usually r

Ancient Celtic Iron Age 'Horned Man' Face Mount - 50 BC
An ancient Celtic Iron Age'Horned Man' face mount. Dating to between 50 BC– 100 AD. The pleasing swirls that compose the face recall classic Celtic vegetal decorative styles. The deep saucer-like eyes draw the viewer in. Whilst the subtly curving horns add a further sense of otherworldliness to the already abstract features. Incisions in the centre of the forehead and beneath the eyes would likely have originally contained inlays. The horned man is often associated with the god Cernunnos(the horned one) A deity common across Celtic western Europe but particularly affiliated with the British Brigantes tribe. The Brigantes, whose name roughly translates as the homage takers, were a federation of smaller clans ruled over by a single royal house. The Roman historian Tacitus believed the Brigantes territory to be the largest British kingdom ... morein both size and population. These people were mostly pastoralists, walking the ancient paths of transhumance, moving their flocks and herds up the hill trails and onto the summer pastures, then back down to the valleys in the late autumn before the first snows fell. The worship of Cernunnos appears to have been widespread and had extremely ancient origins. Speculative interpretations identify him as a god of nature or fertility though this mysterious deity remains something of an enigma. Depictions of him are rare and as such this striking piece stands as a fascinating and evocative artefact. Height mounted: 2 ½ inches. Condition: Very good. Fragmentary as shown, exhibiting a beautiful dark green patina. With bespoke bronze mount included. Provenance: Ex. UK private collection. Acquired 1990's, reputedly of central European origin. Rare Ancient Iron Age Bronze Horse Brooch - 600 BC
A rare ancient European Iron Age bronze horse brooch. Dating to 600– 400 BC. This beautiful artefact is one of only a relatively small number of animal brooches that survive from the European Iron Age. The abstract depiction shows the horse in three dimensional form. Galloping forwards, its body cleverly worked into the frame of the brooch itself, with the hind legs hiding the spring of the pin. Horses were revered throughout prehistoric Europe as both expensive status symbols and prominent figures in myth and folklore. This diminutive object speaks of a culture and people utterly immersed in the natural world. A world where animals were often seen as messengers of the gods, or even gods themselves. Though small, the power of this image was great, deriving its strength from this highly valued and venerated animal. Length: 1 ¾ inches. ... moreCondition: Excellent. Ancient European Iron Age Bronze Hallstatt Knife Blade - 800 BC
An ancient European Iron Age Halstatt bronze knife blade. Dating to 800– 600 BC. Sleek and elegant yet brutally efficient. This stunning bronze weapon must be amongst the finest examples of its type. Cast in a single piece, the blade curves subtly downwards, the upper edge decorated with thick bands of incised lines. The tang is integral, pierced with four holes for attachment to a bone or wooden handle. The early Iron Age was a period of increased wealth in western and central Europe as powerful local chiefdoms emerged. Controlling the redistribution of luxury goods to and from the classical Mediterranean world. In many senses the design of this stunning artefact reflects how the elite men of these tribes viewed themselves. Material evidence from the period suggests they were highly concerned with personal image. Through access to exotic ... moreand valuable goods they appeared as living gods to their people. The vast array of weaponry from the period hints at a violent society, one where the warrior caste were highly active in both defending their land from attack, and travelling forth to raid their enemies. So it is with this blade, there is an elegant even otherworldly form, yet this does not take away from its brutal effectiveness as a deadly weapon. Length: 10 ½ inches. Condition: Excellent.
