A rare Iberian seated bronze warrior. Dating to the 5th- 4th Century B.C. The nude figure sits on a thick platform. His legs together, right arm held upright and left held to the side. A quite abstract and pleasing composition, the facial features simple but powerfully executed, the thick hair swept back and the spinal groove clearly defined at the back. The attitude of this figure strongly hints that he was a warrior- his right hand likely held a spear or other weapon whilst his left may have held a shield. The Iberians were a proto-Celtic people from what is now mostly Spain and Portugal. In ancient times these peoples were regarded as fierce warriors. Often being recruited as mercenaries by the powerful civilizations to the south and east. An extremely rare and unusual Thracian bronze figure of the god Sabazios. Dating to the 2nd- 3rd century A.D. Modelled in provincial style. The depiction is one of a Thracian horseman, his long hair swept away from the face, wearing a short tunic and with his right arm held out in front to balance himself and left hand raised. The figure depicted is Sabazios, the nomadic horseman and sky father god of the Thracians. A truly ancient deity. Sabazios may even be alluded to in Homer's Iliad. Though the Thracian horseman was a common motif in the ancient world, he is ordinarily depicted with a spear in preparation to strike down his foes. An ancient Celtic bronze figure of a horse. Dating to the 2nd– 1st century BC. A beautifully contained piece of ancient bronze sculpture. The animal is shown standing; the limbs, body and neck are wonderfully lithe, the shape of the head is reduced to a mere suggestion, the sleek tail hangs down between the legs, seemingly platted. A small loop is attached to the front of the body, suggesting the piece may have been worn as a pendant or mounted as an attachment. This figure of a horse epitomises the Celtic love for the stylised and purely abstract that seems to pervade all their art. Length: 2 1/8 inches. Condition: Good.
