Ancient Celtic La Tene Silver Brooch
A rare and beautiful ancient Celtic silver brooch. Dating to approximately 50 B.C. A very attractive and highly decorative Celtic triskel brooch. Formed from three separately terminating La Tène style scrolls which spiral out from a central cluster of recessed discs. One of which retaining original pointed finial and red enamel. The circular terminals also recessed to hold silver or electrum sheet metal inlays, centered with pointed finials, one of which remains intact. The reverse of the brooch with remnants of coiled pin and catch plate. Celtic La Tene art is lauded for its imaginative. Organic style. THIS IS NOT A PRINT. Each Brass Rubbing is a hand made original. This is a hand made rubbing of a Celtic Cross from Kelso. Scotland, using metallic gold and silver wax on a special black rag paper. The original cross stands on a long shaft, as did the earliest of circular Celtic crosses. The ring on the cross, which is the defining part of a Celtic cross, is thought to be a combination of Druid sun/moon worship and Christianity. The cross section is shaped in the earliest cross form of an X turned on its side. Drawings of this shape were in the earliest monastries on the British Isles. The half-circle in the arms of the cross are Stafford knots, symbolizing the Trinity. The Stafford knots are bound together by another knot that goes to the centre. Although all these lines and angles do not actually join in the centre(that would break a cardinal ... morerule of Celtic art-having an open centre point) the appearance still remains. The engraving from which this rubbing was taken is from an exhibit and workshop organized by The London Brass Rubbing Centre that has recently been on a National tour as part of their brass rubbing workshop. This cross is based on a Lead Cross that was found in c.1191 at Glastonbury. England by Monks. They uncovered a hollowed out log containing two bodies, while digging between two stone Pyramids standing together in the Abbey Cemetary. The log coffin had been buried quite deep, at around 16 feet down. A stone slab cover had been found at the seven foot level and attached to its underneath was an oddly shaped Cross with a Latin inscription on it. This inscription named the ocupants of the coffin as the renowned King Arthur and his Queen Guinevere. The grave was moved at that time. A marker still stands in the Abbey that reads"Site of King Arthur's Tomb in the year 1191 the bodies of King Arthur ... moreand Queen were said to have been found on the south side of the Lady Chapel. On 19th of April 1278 their remains were removed in the presence of King Edward I and Queen Eleanor to a Black Marble tomb on this site. This tomb survived until the dissolution of the Abbey in 1539.
