An early Anglo-Saxon bronze button brooch. Dating to around 450– 550 AD. This circular Anglo-Saxon bronze brooch is intricately decorated with a single anthropomorphic mask. The prominent and well defined features include a pointed element at the top that is likely to represent a helmet. Immediately below are the sweeping eyebrows reaching above the rounded cheeks. The mouth is open in what appears to be a shout or roar. The back of the brooch bears the remains of a pin lug and catchplate. A relic from Englands pagan past. No one is entirely sure what these expressive dress fasteners were meant to represent. Which creates the illusion of an eye. Celtic La Tene art is greatly admired for its free organic feel. Which lies in contrast to classical art that attempts to depict things in a naturalistic manner.
