Heavy Ancient European Bronze Age Celtic Flat Axe - 2000 BC
An ancient European Bronze Age flat axe. Dating to around 2000 BC. With a pleasingly even and compact form. This flat axe is fantastically well preserved compared to the majority that appear on the market. Widening only subtly at the head, with raised ridges at the sides for slotting into a wooden handle. In looking at this piece. We should not see just a functional object, but an artefact of particular ritual and religious significance. The fact that it has survived in this exceptional condition is not down to chance, rather it was carefully and intentionally buried, either for safekeeping or more likely as an offering.
