Very light porosity(surface pitting caused by contact with earth while buried) Professionally conserved. DETAIL: This is a very handsome. Decorative piece of ancient Roman silver ornamentation. It was probably an ornamental appliqué for a belt or strap, though it could have also been an appliqué for a piece of furniture, wooden chest, or table implement. It’s hard to be certain, but it does appear as if it might have been originally fastened onto a leather strap or belt. In any event the appliqué was discarded or lost almost two thousand years ago. It shows minimal wear, and minimal porosity(surface pitting caused by burial in caustic or acidic soil conditions) Notwithstanding this evidence of usage in the ancient world. It is in wonderful condition, the engraving very sharp, and the artifact is quite handsome. It is the type of decorative ornamentation one would have expected to find on a belt or strap employed by a Roman Soldier. Many pieces of equipment and weaponry were carried on the person of a Roman Legionnaire, many held in place with belts(and buckles) and such ornamental appliqués were quite popular. You'll note the engraved concentric circle on the center of the applique. This concentric circle was intended to provide the wearer a charm providing protection against the effects of"an evil eye" There was an ancient belief that some evil sorcerers or witches had the ability to transmit evil with ju

Pendant, or as earrings(click for more information) DETAIL: Throughout ancient and medieval history. The color purple was traditionally the color of royalty, and was also associated with the planet and the Roman God Jupiter the“Lord of Gods” of the Roman pantheon, also known as Zeus to the ancient Greeks) Consequentially Amethyst has been used since the dawn of recorded history to adorn the wealthy, as well as royalty. Ancient civilizations prized the stone more than many other gems which today enjoy more recognition and value, including sapphire, ruby, diamonds and emerald. For some time in the ancient world, amethyst was valued equally with the diamond, and only royal families were lawfully entitled to own and wear the stone. Amethyst was used extensively in the ancient Mediterranean world for carving intaglio gemstones and seals, particularly by the ancient Greeks and Romans. And in both ancient Greece and Rome rings of amethyst set in bronze were worn as charms against evil. The first century historian and naturalist Pliny wrote that if amethyst were worn round the neck on a cord made from dog's hair, it would afford the wearer protection against snakebite. Celebrating our historical legacy here's a very large. Very clean, 19th century faceted amethyst pear from the Devonian lava beds found along the coast of Angus Country, Scotland. Exported to Russia, the gemstone was hand crafted and faceted by a 19th century Russian artisan, part of an heritage renown for the production of the elaborate gemstones and jewelry of the Czars of Medie

Wearing this stone as a talisman(particular if the gemstone was engraved with the likeness of Neptune/Poseidon, God of the Seas) was believed to protect from adversities at sea, prevent sea sickness, and promote courage and a strong will, and to quicken the intellect. Ancient Greek jewelers made extensive use of aquamarine, which came to them via Arabian camel caravan and ocean-going Mediterranean galleys. Greek naval warriors and merchantmen oftentimes wore aquamarine talismans, engraved with the likeness of Poseidon(Neptune” to their successors the Romans) as protection against dangers at sea. The ancient first century Roman Philosopher/Historian Pliny wrote, the lovely aquamarine, which seems to have come from some mermaid’s treasure house, in the depths of a summer sea, has charms not to be denied. Here's a pair of gorgeous. Pastel blue-green aquamarine semi-precious gem

DETAIL: The ancient Egyptians believed that the skin of their gods was composed of gold. And their bones were thought to be of silver. When silver was introduced into Egypt, it probably was more valuable than gold(silver was rarer and more valuable than gold in many Mesoamerican cultures as well) In surviving inventories of valuables, items of silver were listed above those of gold during the Old Kingdom. Jewelry made of silver was almost always thinner than gold pieces, as indicated by the bracelets of the 4th Dynasty(about 2,500 B.C. When the price of silver finally did fall due to more readily available supplies, for at least another thousand years the price of silver was fixed at half that of gold. Several royal mummies attributable to about 1.000 B.C. were even entombed in solid silver coffins. Around 1,000 B.C. Greek Athenians began producing massive amounts silver from the Laurium mines, and would supply much of the ancient Mediterranean world with its silver for almost 1,000 years. In celebration of that heritage here are two gorgeous, high quality solid sterling silver post type hoop earrings. Please do not confuse these with cheap silver electroplate. These are high-quality solid sterling silver earrings made right here in the USA, crafted to last a lifetime. HISTORY OF SILVER: After gold. Silver is the metal most widely used in jewelry and the most malleable. The oldest silver artifacts found by archaeologists date from ancient Sumeria about 4,000 B.C. At many points in the ancient world, it was actually more costly than gold, particularly in ancient Egypt. Silver is found in native form(i.e. in nuggets) as an alloy with gold(electr

A primitive form of ceramic, was the ancient forerunner of modern glass, and was used by the Ancient Egyptians as far back as 3000 B.C. to fashion various amulets, beads, and other items of personal adornment. Most amulet/necklaces were both worn on a daily basis for protection, as well as buried with the dead to afford protection in the journey from this life to the next. Some bead necklaces were purely items of personal adornment, as these might have been so worn. Faience was produced by crushing quartz mixed with copper, and made into a paste. WEIGHT: 0.49 carats(the pair) NOTES: Upon request we can set your gemstones as a ring. Pendant, or as earrings(click for more information) DETAIL: In the world of the ancient Mediterranean(including the Greeks. Romans, Persians, Hebrews, and the various Indo-European Celtic tribes) priests and sorcerers honored the sapphire above all other gems, believing that sapphire enabled them to interpret oracles and foretell the future. Medieval sorcerers believed that sapphire enabled them to hear and understand the most obscure oracles. Not only did sapphire help to get in touch with astral and psychic realms, but the stone also provided protection for those who took those journeys. On the flip side, Medieval populations believed that wearing a sapphire as a talisman was an antidote to black magic and effects of evil spirits, and provided protection against sorcery. It was believed to banish evil spirits and send negative spells back to the sender. Sapphires have been since ancient times one of the most highly valued of all gemstones, and references to the gemstone date back to about 800 B.C. Here are two gorgeous. Measurements: Length: 20mm. Weight: 2.89 grams. DETAILS: At many points in the ancient world. Silver was actually more costly than gold, particularly in ancient Egypt. Many historians have argued that it was the possession and exploitation of the Laurium mines by the Athenians that allowed them to become the most powerful city state in Greece. At the time these mines started producing prodigious amounts of silver, the price of silver in ancient Egypt was pegged at half that of gold. Enough silver was mined and refined at Laurium(and sold to Egypt) to finance the expansion of Athens as a trading and naval power. Estimates are that Laurium produced 160 million ounces of silver, worth six billion dollars today(when silver is by comparison to gold relatively cheap and abundant) As the production of silver from the Laurium mines ultimately diminished, Greek silver production shifted to mines in Macedonia. In celebration of that heritage here is a pair of gorgeous. Solid sterling silver designer earrings.
