AD200 Roman Province Britannia England Legionary "Chicken" Eagle Bronze Ring Sz9
Genuine Ancient Engraved Legionary Eagle Intaglio Ring Third Century A.D. CLASSIFICATION: Ancient Roman Bronze Ring with an Engraved“Legionary Eagle” Oval Intaglio-Style Bezel. ATTRIBUTION: Western Roman Empire(Britannia) Late Second or Third Century A.D. SIZE/MEASUREMENTS: Fits ring size 9(U.S. Diameter: 22 1/2mm* 22mm(outer dimensions) 19 1/2mm* 18 1/2(inner diameter) Bezel: 18 1/2mm(length) 9 1/2mm(height) 3 ½(thickness) Tapered Width Band: 9mm(at bezel) 5mm(at sides) 3mm(at back) Weight: 7.28 grams. CONDITION: Very Good! Complete. Moderate wear consistent with ancient usage. Moderately light porosity(surface pitting caused by contact with earth while buried) Professionally conserved. DETAIL: A bronze ring circa late second or third century A.D. Intact albeit moderately worn and with very light pebbling(porosity) to the surfaces of ... morethe metal. As you can see, the ring is very basic in design, though very bold, handsome, and elegant in design. The"bezel" or face of the ring is engraved with a Roman Legionary Eagle, wings folded, side profile, head to the right, the quintessential symbol of the Roman Legionary Army. However this is not what you might call a“classical depiction” of a Roman Legionary Eagle, which is usually head on or a three-quarters angle, with wings partly opened. This depiction is not even very fearsome, intimidating, or awe-inspiring at all. It seems a rather amateurish depiction, a simplification with little detail(not much more than an outline) perhaps done by someone not very familiar with what a Roman Legionary eagle was supposed to look like, as it looks rather more like a chicken than an eagle. But I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and even if the depiction does not strike fear into the heart of the beholder(but rather amusement) it is still a wonderful depiction, even if quite atypical. As you can see. The periphery of the bezel was engraved with a boundary accent line, suggesting that perhaps the ring might have been used as a sea

Ancient Roman Bronze Legionary Eagle Brooch/Fibulae 1st Century AD
About The Roman Jewelry Apart from gold and other precious metals. Romans used glass to make their jewelry. Roman jewelry gives us an insight into the culture of this ancient country. Just like other ancient civilizations. Rome also had its distinct strata of social classes. In the Roman society, jewelry was worn for indicating the social status of a person and attaching pieces of clothing rather than beautification. Gold was used by the artisans and jewelers for carving the adornments and jewelry as it was believed to be the metal of the Gods and supposed to have descended from the sun. Other than gold, the materials used in jewelry making were bronze, Roman glass, bone beads and precious gemstones which were excavated from far off places like Persia, Far East, Indus Valley, etc. Diamonds, emeralds and sapphires found their way from the ... moresilk route to the Roman land to appease the rich and mighty of this civilization. About This Item This very impressive. Very rare piece of treasure portrays the Aquila, also known as an eagle in ancient Roman times. It is a solid bronze brooch/fibulae which bears a hole in the middle with the deepest carvings of its textured wings and tail. The pin at the back was lost in antiquity and only part of where it catches, remains. This treasure would have been worn with pride by a male legionary officer. An aquila. Or eagle, was the standard of a Roman legion. It was carried by a legionary known as an aquilifer, or eagle-bearer. One eagle was carried by each legion. The eagle was extremely important to the Roman military. Beyond merely being a symbol of a legion. A lost standard was considered an extremely grave occurrence, and the Roman military often went to great lengths to both protect a standard and to recover it if lost; for example, see the aftermath of the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest, where the Romans spent decades attempting to recover the lost standard

Soldiers would bury their coins and jewelry before going into battle, and many of them did not return. They were also buried to avoid tax collectors and thieves. In ancient times, a ring distinguished an individual in a way that other forms of jewelry did not. Finger rings represented the language of social code, and connoted one’s social standing. Under the Empire, the finger ring ... morewas still considered a privilege, conferred for military distinction. As time wore on and attitudes changed, the ring was more freely bestowed. Even so, the ring retained its position as a mark of dignity, as a rich ornament, as an important seal, and as a token of betrothal. Special caskets were created for holding rings, and it was customary to remove a ring from the casket, to place on the finger of a visiting guest welcomed into one's home. Most of these rings have a picture of a whole eagle with much less detail but this example is an intaglio carved in deep relief with a ton of details from the tip of his beak to the last feather on his head. As you see in my pictures. There is only the slightest wear to the band and we can tell tha
