A beautiful ancient Romano-British silvered and enamelled bronze disc brooch. Dating to 75– 200 AD. Decorated in vibrant red and green enamel. Larger than average and beautifully preserved, this bronze disc brooch is decorated with the Celtic triskele pattern, with wide arms terminating in small discs. The outer border of the brooch and triskele are silvered, with a small dot of silver also lying at the centre of the design. On the reverse, the pin has survived intact, a particularly rare occurrence. This lively piece dates from a period when the identity of those living in the Roman areas of the British Isles was changing rapidly. Not from Celtic to Roman, but embracing both cultures to create a unique fusion of artistic styles. With its origins deep in the prehistory of the Neolithic, the triskele pattern lying at the centre of this brooch ... moreis amongst the most ancient of all Celtic symbols, conversely the enamelled decoration that gives it its vibrancy is quintessentially Roman.
