The Twelve Caesars by Michael Grant. DESCRIPTION: Hardback with Dust Jacket: 294 pages. Publisher: Scribner's(1975) ISBN:0684144026. Michael Grant ... moreis considered the greatest popularizer of ancient history of the century. A highly successful and renowned historian of the ancient world. This book is a biography of the lives of“The Twelve Caesars” the first twelve emperors of Imperial Rome. The book examines the public and private lives of Julius Caesar and the following eleven Roman Emperors. Grant investigates the myths and legends surrounding these men and explores the effects of their public careers on their private lives. If you’re a buff or serious student of Roman History, this is a“must have” CONDITION: LINE NEW. Unblemished save for modest edge and corner shelfwear to dustjacket(including a few very small(1/4 inch) Neatly mended closed edge tears along top top edge of the dustjacket(front and back) Otherwise based on the tightness of the binding, it seems likely that the book was only flipped through a few times(but never actually read through) at worst lightly read once. Pages are pristine; clean, crisp, unmarked, unmutilated, tightly bound; though there's slight yellowing to the front end paper caused by the yellowing of the front dustjacket flap. Otherwise all pages are bright and clean. A handsome volume with only very mild purely cosmetic blemishes. Satisfaction unconditionally guaranteed. In stock, ready to ship. PLEASE SEE IMAGES BELOW FOR JACKET DESCRIPTION(S) AND FOR PAGES OF PICTURES FROM INSIDE OF BOOK. PLEASE SEE PUBLISHER. PROFESSIONAL, AND READER REVIEWS BELOW. PROFESSIONAL REVIEW: REVIEW: Conspiracy. Suspicion, power, corruption, poison, conquests, marauders, murders and more murders. Such is the history of Roman Empire. Then again there are copious examples from every nation's history of such dastardly acts to grab power, from Egyptians pharos, to Bourbons, to Indian Moguls, to British royalty. Human nature has changed very little in two thousand years. Now instead of murderi

Marcus Aurelius: Meditations(Unabridged) Edited by William Kaufman. DESCRIPTION: Softcover: 99 pages. Publisher: Dover Publications. Inc; 1997) ISBN: ... more048629823X. One of the world’s most famous and influential books. Meditations” by the Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius(121-180 A.D. incorporates the stoic percepts he used to cope with his life as a warrior and administrator of an empire. Ascending to the imperial throne in 161 AD, Aurelius found his reign beset by natural disasters and war. In the wake of these challenges, he set down a series of private reflections, outlining a philosophy of commitment to virtue above pleasure and tranquility above happiness. Reflecting the emperor’s own noble and self-sacrificing code of conduct. This eloquent and moving work draws and enriches the tradition of Stoicism, which stressed the search for inner peace and ethical certainty in an apparently chaotic world. Serenity was to be achieved by emulating in one’s personal conduct the underlying orderliness and lawfulness of nature. And in the face of the inevitable pain, loss, and death; the suffering at the core of life, Aurelius counsels stoic detachment from the things that are beyond one’s control, and a focus on one’s own will and perception. Presented here in a specially modernized version of this classic George Long translation. This updated and revised edition is easily accessible to contemporary readers. It not only provides a fascinating glimpse into the mind and personality of a highly principled Roman of the second century, but also offers today’s readers a practical and inspirational guide to the challenges of everyday life. CONDITION: New. Never read. PLEASE SEE IMAGES BELOW FOR SAMPLE PAGES FROM INSIDE OF BOOK. PLEASE SEE PUBLISHER. PROFESSIONAL, AND READER REVIEWS BELOW. PUBLISHER REVIEW: REVIEW: Marcus Aurelius reigned from 161 AD to 180 AD. And was perhaps the only true philosopher-king in the history of the world. In his“Meditations” a series of notes to himself, he formulated his pantheist Stoic bel

Ancient Roman North African Oil Lamp Depicting Iliad Achilles & Hector - 350 AD
A truly remarkable ancient Roman redware terracotta oil lamp. Dating to approximately 350 A.D. The Homeric scene on this piece is an extremely rare and well preserved depiction of one of the classic tales from the ancient world. The discus of the lamp is impressed with the the climactic scene of the Trojan War. Achilles. Having killed Hector in single combat, raises his shield in victory as he drags the corpse of his opponent behind his chariot, which is shown in full gallop. The Greek hero is depicted standing tall, dwarfing both the horses and the body of Hector. He holds his shield and his spear in the left hand, whilst the right, probably originally holding the helmet of the defeated Trojan, is obscured by the pouring hole. Interestingly, the ancient artist has expanded the traditional working area of the discus towards the nozzle of ... morethe oil lamp, so as to accommodate the trailing body. The color of the clay and style of the decoration indicate this piece was produced in a North African workshop. Yet based on the theme of decoration the ancient artist undoubtedly had a good knowledge of the Iliad. As such. This piece reflects the remarkable power of the Roman Empire to transport ideas, customs and literary traditions across its vast domain. Lamps such as this were filled with olive oil and lit with a thick wick which protruded from the nozzle end. The flickering. Muted light of the oil lamp was ubiquitous in the dark nights of ancient times. Length: 5 1/4 inches. Condition: Handle restored. Otherwise intact. Provenance: British private collection. I have never seen anything quite like it from other periods myself.so I have nothing to compare it with. it has a central FINIAL which sticks up. then it LOOKS LIKE it has had 2 types of terminal ends opposite each other. the longest has a flat cirular terminal which has a hole innit for attachment. and the other end has a HOOK or similar broken function. so I would imagine its had these two sorts of items on the opposits that are broken off. it has a slight CURVE to it as well.which may have been on purpose or has been bent in antiquity. there

Roman North African Redware Pottery Fragment 350-420AD The Apostle Paul.
A pair of Roman Red-ware sherds with The Apostle Paul running to Christ. North Africa, c. 5th Century AD From Acts 9- Similar fragments found in Light from the Age of Augustine. This piece is unique due to the legend found above the Apostle Paul's Halo. African red-ware Pottery provides some of the oldest motifs and portraits of Biblical characters. This pottery was influenced by the teaching of Saint Augustine of Hippo during the 4th and 5th century(AD 350-420) after the political conversion of the Roman by Emperor Constantine(AD 307-337) Constantine's conversion of the Empire from paganism to Christianity permitted for the inauguration of Christian motifs on public artwork. Many of Augustine's teachings. Hopes, and allegorical hermeneutics are portrayed throughout these Christian images. Though pagan worship and cultic practice ... morewere eventually banned by the imperial administration, many classical artwork themes of the pagans continued from the past Roman world as the clash between paganism and Christianity struggled to cohabitate. It is evident that these themes made their way into the new art of these Biblical characters. Some biblical characters on African red-ware are portrayed with the classical look of the roman gods among other forms of the continued pagan artistic tradition. African red-ware pottery provides us with an amazing window into the 4th and 5th century Christian world as influenced under the teachings of Augustine. Guaranteed Authentic.
