Very interesting piece. Appears to be a very old handmade ring with an Islamic seal set and hand carved in a gate or possibly carnelian. I have no information ... moreabout it. It is a very tarnished silver with a nice patina. It is in very good condition except for a very tiny chip broken off the agate. You can see this in one of the pictures. There is an interesting cross mark made in the back of the ring on the outside on the shank. I am unsure of age but it could possibly be 1800s?

Fantastic Medieval Mythological Silver Ring with engraved Leda with the Swan
Fantastic Medieval Mythological Silver Ring with engraved Leda with the Swan Lovely Medieval to Renaissance silver ring. The ring consisting of a small flat band rounded from the outside and soldered under a round bezel. T he plate depicting the mythological scene of Leda with the Swan. The inside of the band with old spelling Italian inscription"per tua belta" which means"for your beauty" In Greek mythology. Leda was daughter of the Aetolian king Thestius, and wife of the king Tyndareus of Sparta. Her myth gave rise to the popular motif in Renaissance and later art of Leda and the Swan. She was the mother of Helen of Troy, Clytemnestra and Castor and Pollux. Leda was admired by Zeus. Who seduced her in the guise of a swan. As a swan, Zeus fell into her arms for protection from a pursuing eagle. Their consummation, on ... morethe same night as Leda lay with her husband Tyndareus, resulted in two eggs from which hatched Helen(later known as the beautiful"Helen of Troy" Clytemnestra, and Castor and Pollux. Which children are the progeny of Tyndareus, the mortal king, and which are of Zeus, and are thus half-immortal, is not consistent among accounts, nor is which child hatched from which egg. The split is almost always half mortal, half divine, although the pairings do not always reflect the children's heritage pairings. approx. 1 4.1 7. C. AD Weight 5.9 grams. Size 18.1 mm. US 8. Rare original ancient Byzantine Medieval silver ring artifact Cross star size 9
Rare late Byzantine Medieval silver ring Ring is in good condition and absolutely intact. Measuring 1 8.5-20 mm. inside diameter about size 9.1 US. 3.00 gm. Origina l tone and decorations. Authenticity guaranteed. In ancient times since banks did not exist. Soldiers would bury their coins and jewelry before going into battle, and many of them did not return. They were also buried to avoid tax collectors and thieves. In ancient times, a ring distinguished an individual in a way that other forms of jewelry did not. Finger rings represented the language of social code, and connoted one’s social standing. Under the Empire, the finger ring was still considered a privilege, conferred for military distinction. As time wore on and attitudes changed, the ring was more freely bestowed. Even so, the ring retained its position as a mark of dignity, as ... morea rich ornament, as an important seal, and as a token of betrothal. Special caskets were created for holding rings, and it was customary to remove a ring from the casket, to place on the finger of a visiting guest welcomed into one's home. Put a special badge in the form of a religious cross with attached spur. From this tradition, the Papal Order of the Golden Spur has developed. The Order of the Golden Spur had its origins in the title Count palatine of the Lateran Palace. Which was in the gift of the Holy Roman Emperor in the fourteenth century: Charles IV, Holy Roman Emperor conferred the title on one Fenzio di Albertino di Prato, 15 August 1357, at Prague. The Order began to be associated with the inheritable patent of nobility in the form of count palatinate during the Renaissance; Emperor Frederick III named Baldo Bartolini, professor of civil law at the University of Perugia, a count palatinate in 1469, entitled in turn to confer university degrees. Bartolini also received the Knighthood of the Golden Spur, a title that sometimes accompanied the office of count palatinate in the Renaissance" according to the historian of universities Paul F. With it's beak it holds a plate or similar inscribed" animo non astutia" which might be translated into English as"By courage. Not craft" The basilisk is called"king" because it is reputed to have on its head a mitre- or crown-shaped crest. Stories of the basilisk show that ... moreit is not completely distinguished from the cockatrice. The basilisk is alleged to be hatched by a cockerel from the egg of a serpent or toad(the reverse of the cockatrice. Which was hatched from a cockerel's"egg" incubated by a serpent or toad) In Medieval Europe, the description of the creature began taking on features from cockerels. One of the earliest accounts of the basilisk comes from Pliny the Elder's Natural History. Written in roughly 79 AD. He describes the catoblepas, a monstrous cow-like creature of which"all who behold its eyes, fall dead upon the spot, and then goes on to say, There is the same power also in the serpent called the basilisk. It is produced in the province of Cyrene. Being not more than twelve fingers in length. It has a white spot on the head, strongly resembling a sort of a diadem. When it hisses, all the other serpents fly from it: and it does not advance its body, like the others, by a succession of folds, but moves along upright and erect upon the middle. It destroys all shrubs, not only by its contact, but those even that it has breathed upon; it burns up all the grass, too, and breaks the stones, so tremendous is its

I have had several emails telling and asking me if taking the so-called"patina" off the piece lessens it's value. In my opinion it is not patina but dirt. Patina is found on bronze statues and forms because of their exposure to the air. Almost all of the items I sell and the items like mine on-line, have come out of the ground. They are found either in flint lined safety boxes put into the ground by the original owners or in clumps of dirt if the boxes have broken open, which ... moreis the case most of the time. The dirt has to be broken away to even see the items and that is not a patina, but dirt. If you look on-line you will see that almost all the ancient Roman and Celtic gold and silver jewelry has been cleaned. It has been cleaned to show its true beauty. Most sellers do not want to do this with the bronze( jewelry or coins) because it is time consuming and hard work with little monetary return for the extra effort. I clean them and I put in the hours to do it( one ring can take as many as 5 hours to clean properly. because I feel that they should be seen as their last owners saw them bright and shiny( I leave the inner part of the ring as-is so the new owner can be the first person in the age of the ring to touch it once the"PATINA" wears-off. As far as lessening the value, most of these items are less than $100 and in the 11 years I have been selling these items on Eba there has been little change in the price. In the end it is up to you, the buyer, to decide for yourselves if you would rather have a clean or dirty ring.

In the center of the shield. Is a Tau-Cross engraved. The outer circle with the Latin inscription in Gothic minuscule"Hospitalis Re(gulares) Sancti Antonii" A heavily worn ring but still in wearable condition. This Hospitaller Order of St Anthony( Monastic Order) was founded at La Motte in the Dauphine of France in 1095 by Gaston. A nobleman, whose son was struck by a fungal disease, known in the Middle Ages as Saint Anthony's fire(ergotism) ... moreThis disease is caused by a transformation of the grain(often rye) into enlarged, hard, brown to black spur-like structures that constitute the source of the drug ergot in flour and causes convulsions often leading to death. The members of this Order specialised in curing patients suffering from this disease, hence the name Saint Anthony's fire. The Order was approved by Pope Urban II during the Council of Clermont in 1095. Later in 1218, Pope Honorius III permitted the brothers to take the vows of obedience, poverty and chastity. Because of the wars and disorder during the Reformation the monasteries and hospitals of the Order were often confiscated or destroyed. The attempt of their Grand Master in 1630 to reform the Order was not a success. In 1775 Pope Pius VI incorporated the Order into the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem. The coat of arms of the Hospitallers of Saint Anthony was a Tau-Cross. In 1502 the Austrian Emperor Maximilian I granted the Austrian double-headed eagle as an augmentation to their coat of arms. Placed behind the Tau-Cross When the Order was amalgamated with the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem this double-headed eagle was placed as a supporter

Lovely Byzantine/Medieval Silver SIGNET Ring with a raven sitting on a fist
Lovely Byzantine/Medieval Silver SIGNET Ring with a Raven sitting on a fist Fabulous Byzantine to early Medieval silver Signet ring. The ring consisting of a round band ending with leading out shoulders. The shape of the ring is reminiscent of a Roman ring type of the 1st-5th century. In ancient Rome the augurs consulted the oracle bird( a raven) to see if a planned action is agreeable to the gods. Depending on the direction from which a raven flew through delimited by the augurs area. Meant disaster or blessing. It came from the left, it was a bad sign, from the right meant a favorable constellation. Flog even a couple in the"augural District" ... morethis was seen as particularly positive. These artifacts were originally designed to be enjoyed by their owners and I have tried to return these treasures to a state which will both charm and enchant their new owners and show the skill and craftsmanship of old. This ring has a SUPERB design! This fine ring was found at a Roman encampment site in Ancient Moesia but was probably lost centuries later at the time of the Crusades and dates from ca. 1100A.D. to 1500A.D. This ring features a shield design in the center of the bezel that I have come across from time to time. The most famous of this cross type, is the"Maltese Cross" These rings have to have been made to"say something" to whoever saw it. Much like wearing a Mason's ring today would signal your membership to other Freemasons. The design is crisp and clear and very well done. There are also some EXCELLENT shoulder decorations which are quite bold. Each shoulder has a panel that is also outlined with dots and with a nicely done decoration in them. The surface of this ring is as smooth as glass and the color is a deep. Bright silver. I have to talk about the metal that this ring was cast from. I think that it is some type o

During his last period of exile at the court of England(1377–1379) The Breton duke John V the Conqueror observed the functioning of the Order of the Garter. Back in Brittany, in 1381, he created his own order. The little we know of this order comes from Guillaume de St-André. In 1448, it became the Order of the Ermine and the Ear of Grain(Ordre de l'Hermine et de l'Épi) The ermine was a natural choice for the badge of his order, since the heraldic representation of its fur is the coat of arms of the Dukes of Brittany. In medieval times the ermine was believed to risk capture or death rather than sully the purity of its white fur and thus a symbol of concern for the uncompromising integrity of one's personal honor. A similar legend is the background for the motto"malo mori quem foedari" rather die than be sullied" of the Neapolitan ermine Order. Where and when the legend originated is unknown. But was the white ermine fur in large parts of medieval Europe a symbol of- moral- purity and innocence. Lodovico Sforza was member of this order since 1488. And the ermine in Leonardo

In 1095 Pope Urban II proclaimed the first crusade. With the stated goal of restoring Christian access to the holy places in and near Jerusalem. Many historians and some of those involved at the time, like Saint Bernard of Clairvaux, give equal precedence to other Papal-sanctioned military campaigns undertaken for a variety of religious, economic, and political reasons, such as the Albigensian Crusade, the Aragonese Crusade, the Reconquista, and the Northern Crusades. Following the first crusade there was an intermittent 200-year struggle for control of the Holy Land, with six more major crusades and numerous minor ones. In 1291, the conflict ended in failure with the fall of the last Christian stronghold in the Holy Land at Acre, after which Catholic Europe mounted no further coherent response in the east.
