Sometimes given as Julien-Hippolyte Moulin or Hypolite Moulin, 1832–1884) was a 19th. century French sculptor. Moulin, a shopkeeper's son, entered the école des Beaux-Arts in 1855 but was unable to afford to continue the lessons and had to become a language teacher in Paris to support himself. He subsequently studied with Auguste-Louis-Marie Ottin and with Antoine-Louis Barye. His bronze statue A Lucky Find at Pompeii(Une Trouvaille à Pompei) 1863) depicts a nude boy with a spade dancing for joy with one leg raised. Because he has unearthed a Roman statuette. His nude pose reflects that of the statuette itself, possibly indicating that the statue depicts the excavator imagining himself in the original statuette's pose. The statue won a medal at the Paris Salon of 1864 and became his most famous work. The life-size original was bought by the French Government for 7,000 francs and exhibited at the Exposition Universelle in 1867. It now stands on a tall pedestal in the Musée d'Orsay alongside Alexandre Falguière's Winner of the Cockfight on an adjacent pedestal- another bronze nude dancing boy poised on one leg that had also been exhibited at the 1864 Salon. Moulin won further Salon medals in 1867 and 1869, and another at the Exposition Universelle, 1878. His other works include Victoria Mars(plaster exhibited at the Salon of 1872) and A Secret from On High(Secret d'en Haut) plaster 1873; marble 1875. Now also in the Musée d'Orsay alongside other

Marcus Aurelius: Meditations(Unabridged) Edited by William Kaufman. DESCRIPTION: Softcover: 99 pages. Publisher: Dover Publications. Inc; 1997) ISBN: ... more048629823X. One of the world’s most famous and influential books. Meditations” by the Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius(121-180 A.D. incorporates the stoic percepts he used to cope with his life as a warrior and administrator of an empire. Ascending to the imperial throne in 161 AD, Aurelius found his reign beset by natural disasters and war. In the wake of these challenges, he set down a series of private reflections, outlining a philosophy of commitment to virtue above pleasure and tranquility above happiness. Reflecting the emperor’s own noble and self-sacrificing code of conduct. This eloquent and moving work draws and enriches the tradition of Stoicism, which stressed the search for inner peace and ethical certainty in an apparently chaotic world. Serenity was to be achieved by emulating in one’s personal conduct the underlying orderliness and lawfulness of nature. And in the face of the inevitable pain, loss, and death; the suffering at the core of life, Aurelius counsels stoic detachment from the things that are beyond one’s control, and a focus on one’s own will and perception. Presented here in a specially modernized version of this classic George Long translation. This updated and revised edition is easily accessible to contemporary readers. It not only provides a fascinating glimpse into the mind and personality of a highly principled Roman of the second century, but also offers today’s readers a practical and inspirational guide to the challenges of everyday life. CONDITION: New. Never read. PLEASE SEE IMAGES BELOW FOR SAMPLE PAGES FROM INSIDE OF BOOK. PLEASE SEE PUBLISHER. PROFESSIONAL, AND READER REVIEWS BELOW. The Town of Hercules: A Buried Treasure-Trove by Joseph Jay Deiss. DESCRIPTION: Hardcover with Dust Jacket: 183 pages. Publisher: Houghton Mifflin; 1974) ... moreISBN: 0395185165. It was a sunny. Cloudless August morning and the people of Herculaneum were going about their usual round of activities. In various parts of the town workmen plied their trades. Cabinet makers hammered and sawed, bakers baked their loaves of bread, cloth-makers dyed and pressed their cloth. The streets were filled with people, and shopkeepers hawked their wares: snacks both hot and cold, glassware, vegetables, pots and jewelry. Inside most of the houses lunch was being prepared. Suddenly a violent, cracking sound filled the air. From a mountaintop a vast mushroom cloud billowed into the sky. Within a short time the city of Herculaneum would be lost to history for almost two thousand years. Like its sister city Pompeii on the Bay of Naples. Herculaneum was buried by the great eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D. Unlike Pompeii, smothered in hot ashes, Herculaneum was smothered under a river of hot mud. The mud slowly cooled and hardened. Herculaneum, buried at depths ranging from sixty-five and ninety-five feet, was preserved as if in plastic- a treasure-trove for rediscovery many centuries later. In this story, Author Joseph Deiss tells of that rediscovery, the years of painstaking archaeological work that went into digging out this fascinating city. From its well-preserved remains it is possible to virtually reconstruct the life that went on there. And Mr. Deiss has done so admirably with words and over ninety photographs, many of which have never before been published. CONDITION: Unblemished except moderate edge+corner shelf wear to dustjacket. Including a few tiny, neatly mended closed edge tears. Dustjacket is actually very clean and presentable, but after 30+ years it simply shows a modest amount of shelfwear. The book itself is"new" in the sense it is clearly unread. Publisher: University of California Press; 1998) This animated and readable book will surprise readers who assume that erotic art is universal in its meaning. Author John R. Clarke asks. what did sex mean to the Romans? In offering his provocative and thoughtful answer, Looking at Lovemaking” examines Roman attitudes toward sex and toward race, ethnicity, physical deformity, and humor as well; and shows how radically the Roman’s conception of these ideas differs from ours today. This richly illustrated volume is the first study of ancient erotic art and sexuality to set these works, many of them newly discovered and previously unpublished, in their ancient context, and the first to define the difference between modern and ancient concepts of sexuality using clear visual evidence. To characterize a work of art as“erotic” summons ideas of illicit images to be kept out of public view. And yet Clarke shows us that Roman depictions of sex. In all its diversity, were very much in demand. Visual representations of sex between men, between women, and between men and women, all in a variety of positions and groupings, were produced in a range of media, from fine cameo-glass and silver vessels to wall-paintings and mosaics, to mass-produced ceramics. ROMAN POMPEII FRESCO REPLICA PRIAPUS GOD OF FERTILITY
A historical painting with great mythology! PRIAPUS(PRIAPOS) The Vettius house belonged to two wealthy merchants. Aulus Vettius Restitutus and Aulus Vettius Conviva. Its beautiful paintings(still in their original positions) and the skillful reconstruction of its apartments make it one of the most interesting houses to visit in the whole town. This is a small sampling of the brilliant frescoes which remain in the house in their original locations. Long-standing God of Virility and Fertility Approximate size: 9.5 cm x 14 cm(3.8" x 5.5" mounted on black foam board 12 cm x 16.5 cm(4.8" x 6.5" Though there is some confusion on who his father was. It must have been Zeus. Deposited the seed which incited the creation of the magnificent Priapos. Ever jealous Hera got overly upset because of this affair of her husband and with ... morea magic touch to Aphrodite's belly. Cursed the child growing there in the way most offensive to Aphrodite: she made him ugly. According to hearsay. Priap u s was born with a huge belly. Huge feet, hands, nose, tongue, and a gigantic, always erect phallus. The obscenity of this creature so offended Aphrodite that she cast him out of her realm and abandoned him in the wilderness. Some others say that he was utterly chasing after all the goddesses that the Gods kicked him out and Priapus fell to Earth. He was taken in by a herdsman. Who found that wherever this incredible creature went. Everything grew like crazy: Plants shot up from the ground. And animals hopped upon each other, copulating furiously and giving birth. Priapus soon became known as a fertility god, but this is only a part of his aspect. He also was said to cure impotence, bring good luck and was particularly adept at warding off the evil-eye. Ancient authors tell a lot about the worship of Priap u s. Women who wanted to have babies would wear amulets that represent his phallus. They would sing and chant while swinging those amulets tied to a string in his shrine. MAY THIS POMPEII PRIAPUS BRING YOU THE JOY. HAPPI
