Gold was used by the artisans and jewelers for carving the adornments and jewelry as it was believed to be the metal of the Gods and supposed to have descended from the sun. Other than gold, the materials used in jewelry making were bronze, Roman glass, bone beads and precious gemstones which were excavated from far off places like Persia, Far East, Indus Valley, etc. Diamonds, ... moreemeralds and sapphires found their way from the silk route to the Roman land to appease the rich and mighty of this civilization. This very large. Eye-catching ancient Roman silver alloy ring bears a broad, symmetrical and smooth hoop, which opens up into two parts at its shoulders, and soldered firm to the back of its bezel. As additional reinforcement, the ancient craftsman has added a flat piece of etched silver alloy strip attaching the side of the bezel to the shoulders of the hoop. Each of these strips is decorated with a carved palm branch which symbolizes‘brotherhood’ and unity. Its very large square shaped. Shield-type bezel is turned in slightly at the uppermost tip, forming a secure frame for its rich, deep red glass inlay. This dark red hued glass inlay was used to represent the likes of a precious garnet gemstone. Its sides are decorated with intricately etched linear decoration all around. This very captivating ring is of excellent condition and is just as bold and eye-catching an adornment when worn today, as it was then. ROMAN BULLA, W/HEAD OF EMPEROR, CA. 100 - 300 AD
A Roman terracotta bulla(seal) with the head of an emperor on one side and the reverse having indentations from a cord used to secure it to some object. Ca. 1st- 3rd Century AD. This bulla had a cord wrapped around it when wet, the cord used to attach it to either a rolled papyrus scroll, the plug of an amphora or some other object. In order to gain access the clay bulla would have to be broken thus revealing any tampering with the contents. The cord groove around this seal is still visible and was used to mount the bulla with brass shafting. The indentation from the ancient cord(now lost to antiquity) can be seen on the rear. Fired hard. Probably from a fire in one of the eastern cities that was razed by the Sasanian king Shapur in the 250's AD. 3/4" 19mm) in diameter, 1/4" 6mm) thick, mounted and labeled on a painted and polished ... morewood plinth, the overall height is 3-1/2" 9.2cm) I will furnish a color photocopy(laminated in clear plastic) of an attributed ancient scroll with the bulla still attached by the cord, for complete permanent dating and culture documentation. A very nice example of an ancient Roman administrative tool, displays very nicely. Also comes with my lifetime Certificate of Authenticity and Guarantee, bid with confidence, you will not be disappointed. PS. Be sure to examine my other offerings. Thanks.
