The leather handles on each end are also intact, however, they are brittle and cracking. The latches work, but the center locking mechanism is missing. There is a small break in the wood of the trunk in this area, where the bottom portion of the locking latch would have been located. There is a piece of the left latch that is also missing. The inside lining of the trunk is intact, but it is quite dirty, and there are large stains on it as well. The original label is still present on the inside of the lid but is very faded. The trunk is 9.5” deep, 13.5” tall, 30.5” long, and 22.5” wide.

But I am having a really hard time deciphering it, it appears to be someone's name and then a place in New York. The trunk does have railroad transportation labels on both sides of the trunk. The trunk does have some wear as you can see, original front lock hardware is missing and it does have surface loss. Some of the paint has alligatored a bit on the sides as you can see from the photos. Trunk measures 35.25 inches wide by 17.25 inches deep by 17 inches tall. It has labels for New York Central Railroad and Westcott express one side and the other side has a very partial label and from what I can tell it is in French. The front of the trunk may read Hauve(France)New York. I think this is a really nice piece, I think it has a good folk art look to it and great to find it with original green paint. It is a wood structure trunk and frame with smooth me tal(black) and woven pattern metal riveted overlays with beautiful beading to ta ck in metals and curved and straight gorg eousl y grained wood slat s. Here's what I stated about it s condition: Metal overlay surfaces have been repainted and restored. Some scratches and scuffs marks on beautifully grained wood slats. Leather handle missing on left side. Flip up side locking latches both flip up into locking position. But only one catches to keep it lock closed and the other is missing its catch. Center locking latching closes in position but does not lock and there is no key. Interior lining shows foxing and staining and has some t ares due to great age. But smells clean with nice scent like cedar inside. Truly a rare beauty of extra large size that has great looks and craftsmanship on evident in these earlier era pieces of exceptional beauty. It is in good condition, but the leather handles and straps are worn, and are broken and missing pieces. ... moreThe trunk itself is in good condition, although I am unsure of its actual age. The trunk has a hinged lid, and the original lining is still inside the bottom portion of the trunk. The trunk is made of wood, with a nice brown covering that is mainly intact, although it is torn in quite a few places, and metal reinforced seams. There is no key with it, and the original locking mechanism is now missing. The trunk also has two latches, one on each side of the main lock, that are a unique design and work well, although they are covered with a fair amount of surface rust. The trunk also has other label remnants on it from travel, as well as a partial guarantee label inside the lid.
