This trunk measures approximately 22" ... morelong X 14" wide X 15 1/2" high and it has two hinges in back that hold the lid securely to the base. There used to be sturdy leather handles on each side of the trunk but they are no longer intact, these can be purchased inexpensively on-line and they're fairly easy to replace. The corner protectors and hardware appear to be brass plated steel. There are two hasp type closures, one on each side of the lock and the lock needs to be bent just a little to close it securely. We tried the key and the locking mechanism seems to work properly but we didn't want to damage anything so it will arrive open with the key tucked in an envelope safely inside. The inside of the trunk is wood and there should be wood beneath the black material covering the outside(it is non-magnetic and we don't think it's metal) This little trunk is in very good condition and once it's restored it should be a beauty- perfect for your antique doll collection or as a gift for a very special grandchild. IL- ... moreFar west Chicago suburbs) UP FOR AUCTION: A gorgeous. Vintage, Art Deco, walnut waterfall-style cedar-lined blanket or hope chest. Elegant contrasting veneer inlay work on front center. It's unmarked as to maker. I think it's likely circa early to mid-1900s. I believe it's in original condition. It has one interior. Multi-sectioned drawer on hinges(in need of minor repair-see below) It's constructed of walnut veneer with cedar lining, and secondary hardwood(s) The back is unfinished. Wonderful for storage and display or seating, it's both beautiful and superbly useful. CONDITION: Overall. I think it's in nice vintage condition. Solid and sturdy. Only the tiniest bit of veneer loss that I can see: a few tiny chips along the back edge. Minor nicks, imperfections normal to vintage furniture. It does have some flaws: 1) the top surface has superficial scratches and age-related splits in the veneer(but they seem shallow enough to me that I think just polyurethane(were the top refinished) and/or a walnut-tone pore filler would be enough to fill them for a flawless(or nearly so) top. 2) In the interior. Lid, left side, the wood affixing the screw supporting the pull-out shelf is stripped(please see photos; the drawer is just propped in place in the photo) so is in need of this repair. I'd probably suggest filling the oversized hole with wood scraps and glue to fill, then redrilling the hole(possibly a larger screw would work) this is left to the buyer. 3) The locks on these old chests pose a safety hazard to children(won't open from within; children can suffocate inside) and can't be sold with the lock in place. I've removed and discarded it. Leaving just the hardware(for aesthetics) so it simply opens and closes, and can be opened from inside. The buyer, if he/she desires a working lock, can probably purchase one through ebay or vi

There is a smaller storage box and a drawer. There is one large drawer below with dovetail joints. It has two brass willow mount and bail handle pulls that match the brass escutcheon above. 17th century Spanish Colonial Tooled Leather Coffer Trunk Chest
This stunning 17th century tooled leather Spanish Colonial coffer retains its original hardware and patterned linen lining. The mark of an old cattle brand is clearly visible in the leather on the back of the trunk. it would be great to find a way to trace this brand to the hacienda from which the herd came. The carved claw feet belong to the trunk but are two separate pieces, and serve to keep the trunk up off the floor. While very old, they may have been made for the chest sometime after its completion. Many of the hand forged nails remain but some are missing. Antique Wood Leather Travel Chest / Trunk c. Late 1700's
Up for auction is an Antique Vintage Wood Leather Traveling Chest circa late 1700’s. The chest is made out of wood. Was once covered in cow hide(most of which has worn off) and has leather hinges. It measures 17.5 inches long x 10 inches wide x 7.5 inches high and has a metal clasp/ lock(with no key) The top part of the lock is no longer attached to the lid. The handle on the top is also missing. The inside of the chest is lined with newspaper which has a date of Tuesday. April 1, 1794 from the Catskill Packet. The chest was purchased from an estate sale and I have no further information or back ground on it. Shipping includes insurance.

This is a rare pre-1800 period oak chest or trunk. The chest features hand chiseled carvings or motifs on the front followed by a scalloped edge base. The chest has mitered corners along with hand forged hinges and nails. The lid braces were hand hewn and have distinctive worm holes that come with theses century old pieces of furniture. It is a wonderful old piece which reeks of character. The chest measures 351/2" by 13" and stands 16" tall and is in excellent. Here is an antique trunk from the 18th century. Early 1700's period. It is made of oak and I believe it most likely hails from England. It is intricately and beautifully carved and in overall fine condition for its age. It has wear as expected, some repairs to wood, some holes in wood in the base. It is very attractive and would be nice to showcase in your home or office, as well as a great place to store items. This measures 54" long, 21" deep, and 27" high. This antique solid oak chest/trunk/coffer came into our family when it was purchased from an antique store in Summerland. California back in the mid 1980's. It was sold to us with the provenance that it is from the early 1700's and was a ship captain's chest/trunk/coffer and was from England. Condition as shown in the pictures is as we received it and it has been well cared for since it came into our hands. It has the original hand forged iron hardware and does have the original working lock and key. The construction is with wood pegs and the main box is made with one piece oak planks, with the front and side decorations placed over that. Overall dimensions of this piece are: approximately 48" long, by approximately 24" deep, by approximately 24" high. Considering that the planks used in this piece are all straight ... moregrain with no knots, it is quite possible the tree the wood came from was very old itself. It was hand made from solid zelkova wood, and has hand wrought iron mounts. This chest measures about 42 1/4" long, by 17 1/2" deep, and 16.1/2 inches high, and sits on shoe feet. The hinged lid is a single board 11 inches deep. Italian Renaissance Cassone or Late 1700's Antique Dowry Chest or Trunk. An Italian"Cassone" is a traditional dowry chest or trunk in Renaissance design. Descending with the daughters of a prosperous family. This example from about 1775 is solid walnut with an excellent finish and warm antique patina. There are shrinkage separations and mars for antique character. A bride's dowry including linens and silver would have been kept in this prized heirloom possession. The top originally lifted. This furniture from northern Italy has been altered to allow the the locking front panel to open instead, so things could be set on top, useful as a wide screen TV console. Inlaid burl and banding are beautiful. Hand carved detailing is exceptional. Original wrought iron hinges for the top are visible inside. Antique 1667 German Oak Hammered Iron Traveling Trunk Coffer Chest 17th Century
Antique 1667 German Oak Hammered Iron Traveling Trunk. Measures 44" wide by 25" high by 23" depth. NOT a reproduction. My parents bought this over from a trip to Europe in 1971. Extremely sturdy. Very little damage, just on some of the iron and I have the small the piece that is missing from the left bottom, it needs to be reattached. No key. There are two U-shaped pieces that would attach the trunk to a coach in the back. I have the shipping manifest with the shipping date of Feb. 1972 when my parents shipped it from Germany. This is obviously a very heavy piece(I guesstimate well more than 200 pounds) and would need to be shipped by a freight carrier. 18th century antique trunk deer hide cow animal hide dome traveling chest EB
Late 18th century deer or cow hide covered some top wooden trunk or chest. Adorned with breads studs and donning the initials E.B. Just amazing piece of history. Could be fixed up or appreciated for what it is! Unusual to see paper lined inside so well intact especially with original tag on the inside describing some maker of some elements of the trunk- Sam L. Ash who I had read about once being well renowned engraver of the last quarter of the 18th century. This trunk does have condition issues. Please review photos carefully and ask any and all questions prior to any bidding. Notes: hide is detaching and or missing in numerous areas, hair missing from sections, signs of water damage in small areas, peeling paper inside, general wear and tear.

Antique 1790's Carved Figural Trunk Coffer Mule Chest Dovetails Hammered Nails
Original lidded coffer wood trunk. Circa 1790's. The origin is probably English. The trunk measures about 26 1/4" wide(side to side) x 13 1/2" deep x 15 1/2" tall, the box is 13" tall without the foot skirt. Highly ornate hand carvings with figural bust- very detailed. The single board lid's side pieces are attached by ten large hand hammered nails with two additional nails holding the lock hasp. The exposed nail heads are 11/16" wide. The metal lock hasp is hand hammered with rivets. The metal lock plate is hand hammered. The side pieces are attached by large dovetails. The footed skirt appears to be original to the trunk, but I am not positive. There is a modern repair to the bottom leg in one place. Please note the large and unusual nail head that attaches the bottom skirt to the trunk box. The chest is ... morein very good antique condition with numerous signs of wear and age. Antique Heavily Carved Gothic Trunk - Chest From A Catholic Church

Beautiful large heavily carved gothic trunk. Purchased several years ago from a local antique store who stated it came from England from a Catholic church. We had it appraised at Palmer Wirfs. The appraiser said it was very plausible it did come from a church and believed it held religious icons. It was appraised for 4500.00 to 5500.00 It has a seam down the very middle of the chest and a handful of small knicks but I would say is in good condition for its age. Antique Deer / Pony Skin Domed Top Studded Travel Trunk Chest c. 1800
A stunning antique domed top travel trunk dating from circa 1800. This was made to be used as a travel trunk and would have sat on the back of a coach and horses. Of wooden construction. Covered with deerskin or possibly pony skin with leather studded detail and iron strapping over all edges. Much of the hair is gone from the skin but what remains is a reddish brown colour. The skin is present throughout. In areas on the sides and back it is rather rippled I think there would have been initials in studs on the top either side of the studded diamond shape. The old holes are just visible and I think say MJ. Parts of the iron strap work are heavily deteriorated. Particularly on the top surface which would have been exposed to the elements. There are small areas of the leather strapping which are missing too. The two iron carry handles appear ... moreoriginal. There is a lock plate to the front with a second plate below it. The lock is present but there is no hasp or key. Internally the timber seems sound. There is damage and wear around the hinges. But support is given by the leather straps inside which take pressure off the hinges. The base has two timber feet which run the full width front and back. There is wear to the corners of the front one and some old worm damage. This has been treated for precaution and is not active. Measures: 67cm x 42cm x 43cm high This is a great period piece full of character. Which has obviously had a long history of use. I have tried to describe all it's wear which is all consistant with great age. Please feel free to ask any questions or request any specific photos. Antique Late 18th Century Fancy Cow Hide Chest Carriage Trunk Brass Monogram NR
Up for your consideration is this late 18th century/early 19th century cow hide covered trunk or chest. This early chest still has its original hand forged iron hardware. The outside hide has mostly shed away its original fur leaving a very nice patina and grain like texure. We do see some fur still left under the original brass tacks lining this chest and spelling C. W. C. on the top of the lid. The original ornate leather trim is still in tact. We do notice this truck still has is original interior paper lining. One leather hinge has worn away on the left side(see photos) It looks as though someone added a chain to the interior sometime in it's existence. The underside of this trunk is solid with damage. 18th century Antique Blanket Chest - GRAIN PAINTED - PA - Dome Trunk untouched
You are bidding on a 18th century"immigrant trunk. It is in great. Original condition. The trunk dates to the 18th century. I have had two of Rhode Island's highly respected colonial antique dealers examine the chest, and both have confirmed my approximation of age. In fact, one antique furniture expert(with a Ph.D. in history) just today, after examining the trunk for 30 minutes, said it is possible that the trunk dates to the mid, or even early 1700's, making it a full 300 years old. But I will err on the side of understatement, and simply say the trunk is 18th century. The expert was very impressed with the shape and character of the hand-forged hinges. And in particular, was effusive in his excitement with regard to the quality of the hand-forged locking mechanism(Please compare this latch/lock with the lock on the $45,000 ... moretrunk currently on eBay) It still closes with"vise-like" strength. And we both marveled at the key.which appears to be original to the locking mechanism. Can you imagine that?nearly 300 years old, and still with the probable original key. I can't go a year without losing a key. With regard to the paint: neither the two colonial America antique dealers. Nor myself, can say with absolute 100% certainty that the paint is original to the piece. Though, after examining the trunk very closely.front, back, sides, top and bottom.we could find not a thing that points to anything other than original paint. It is simply extraordinary to find a piece of this age with such deep, rich color. So I am going to err on the side of understatement, and simply say very old paint. Most probably original. With regard to the trunk's origin: Years ago. When I purchased the trunk at auction, the auctioneer had described the trunk"as found in Berks Co. Pennsylvania. This makes sense to me, as the trunk certainly has the look of northern European origin.probably Dutch, German, or Scandinavian. 17th C MIDEIVAL TRUNK Blacksmith Iron & Wood primitive Travel Chest
Boy where to start.This is a Very Very Old and Very Impressive looking Travel Chest and or Lock Box. A Very Early Construction piece with Iron tacks not Brass and Wonderful Fleur de lis style Blacksmith Forged Hinges. A very early Medieval style Trunk that looks to date to atleast the early 1700's and possibly Early 1600's or so looking at the primitive blacksmith and forging work. So 300 to 400 years old is not out of the question at all. This chest is Guaranteed to be atleast 300 years old& was a fresh find from a Maryland Estate where it had been for the last 100 year when I bought it. Notice the primitive hand made henge pin on one top hinge's I took a close up of. The trunk was originally covered in leather hide which has all but worn away over the century's. It still has some under the tacks but it's brittle ... moreand hard.The sides have some left also. Look around the blacksmith decorative work on the side edges. All of the hard wear looks period to the box and has fully functional hinges though the lock mechanism as you can see has been long removed and a bit forcefully I might ad. It's no big surprise this trunk has been broken into. Probably a number of times and that explains the missing wood around the lock area. I just wonder what this old trunk has had stored in it over the century's. The little bit of man made damage around the lock just helps tell some of it's story but opens up more question in the mind when you see it. I can sit and look at this trunk with my imagination running wild. It's so old and so much history has been recorded during this trunks life I can get lost looking at it and thinking at times. Massive 18th Century. Mid 1700's German Immigrants trunk. DomeTop wood and metal. Interior storage box with hand carved hinges. Hand forged iron work. Extremely thick wood. Impressive is the perfect adjective when describing the true craftsmanship of this nearly 300 year old relic. Very solid construction with wooden dowels and forged nails. Pictures do not do this piece justice. I do not have the key and the lock insert has been bent upwards to keep from locking.
