17th/18th Century Oak Coffer with Inlaid Top. Rare. About as Rustic as Possible!
Description Antique Oak Coffer. Two dates here, the lower section is very early probably about c1670, the lid is a bit later, probably c1720. This is such an amazing piece. It's the most rustic thing I have ever owned, the timbers look ancient, they are grizzled and worn, rough cut in places(the back looks like it was roughly hacked off a tree) and just looks wonderful, if only it cold talk, it must have seen so much interesting history in it's 340 odd years! The top is a little later. And very unusually has satinwood and ebony triangular inlays, this is very very rare, these things are always just plain oak or some light carving(like this one has on the front) but very rarely do they have inlays. The inlays are fairly provincial looking and definately hand applied and cut, they again are just great to behold! If you love it. Rare Original Pair Early 16th Century English Carved Oak Romayne Panels c1520. An exceptionally rare pair of early 16th century English carved oak panels featuring male and female portraits. With wonderful mythical beasts above. There are some small losses to the back of the head of the female portrait, and some black card has been backed with paper and placed over the loss(see images below) The rest of the panel is very sturdy/stable and in good condition, The male portrait panel is quite exceptional and in very fine condition with no damage or losses. Both panels are in untouched condition and have not been waxed, they would indeed glow if polished but I feel they are so beautiful in the present untouched state. Fine Rare Small 16th Century Boarded Oak Chest Stamped/Initialed I.W Superb and rare late 16th century English oak chest of small proportion with typical Elizabethan shaped buttress feet. Constructed with handmade iron nails throughout. All untouched. Handmade iron lock, plate and hasp with iron strap hinges to lid, again fixed with iron rose nails. The hinges are early replacements most likely fitted in the 17th century, the top was originally secured on iron wire hinges. This chest has a wonderful deep colour and rich patination to the fossilised oak surface, most likely attained from years of being close to the hearth. The front is stamped/branded twice with the initials I.W. All the oak timber throughout the chest is original with no additions or alterations. English Oak Carved Chest - Believed to be Genuine Tudor Period - 16th Century
Normal 0 In spite of the damage and some of the alterations and repairs done to this chest. It is a good looking piece ready for display. this is the real deal with the main carcass or case and carvings being hundreds of years old. I have just finished looking at pictures of the Tudor Warship the Mary Rose and noted that the dovetail joints on the chest shown in the pictures are very similar in style and size and spread to the joints on this chest I have for sale; these are not made like modern joints) The chest is about 5' long. 24" from front-to-back when measured at the top of the lid and it is 26" high. I obtained this chest from a man whose father obtained it from a wealthy estate some years ago. the man told me that this chest was"16th Century" Some of what I see confirms that it could be: it was made as an oak ... moreplank chest. Probably with the quarter or rift sawn trim and carved panels depicting upper class individuals- the man wearing a wide fluted collar) there are dovetail joints most noticeable on the back. the boards on the bottom and front and back are wide- in excess of 18" and one of them is 22" wide- I am a professional woodworker and I restore 19th century doors for a living and have never seen wood this wide. The wood on the bottom is split and has a good bit of worm damage( I can make a new wood bottom and set it over the existing if someone wanted to use this for storage; I am open to discussion, I can even cut a piece of ply wood to fit on pickup if the purchaser wishes) all of the wood except the bottom appears to be oak. the bottom appears to be pine. There is quarter sawn oak trim applied to the front and sides of the chest. the trim is applied with dowels- which I have never seen before(though a collector who recently look at this told me that was a common way to apply trim in days before nails) the dowels must have been applied early as the boards have shrank around them leaving a bit of protrusion on the inside. Period 18th Century Antique Carved Oak Storage Chest Trunk - RARE
This is a rare pre-1800 period oak chest or trunk. The chest features hand chiseled carvings or motifs on the front followed by a scalloped edge base. The chest has mitered corners along with hand forged hinges and nails. The lid braces were hand hewn and have distinctive worm holes that come with theses century old pieces of furniture. It is a wonderful old piece which reeks of character. The chest measures 351/2" by 13" and stands 16" tall and is in excellent. Up for consideration is a mid 17th century heavily carved and inlaid Oak Coffer. The piece measures 49 1/2 inches long by 19 1/8th inches deep by 30 1/2 inches tall. The piece has an interesting English or American Auction label or handbill posted to the interior dating February 24th 1817. Very Fine Original Early 18th Century Carved Dated Oak Desk Box. Carved with initials M.H and dated 1714. Superb quality piece with beautiful colour. Skin and patination throughout. Construted with handmade iron rose nails, all untouched. Original period iron butterfly hinges. The box has a beautiful thin top with triple moulded edge to front and rear, another sign of a top quality piece from its time.There is a wonderful gentle upward warp to the top that just adds real character to this piece. The carving to the front is very fine and detailed, including the initails and date which are quite beautifully executed. The box has its original fitted interior intact, each drawer is also constructed with iron nails, again untouched. The drawers have never had handles fitted, you can even see the faint scribing marks to the front of drawers where ... morehandles could of been placed. All the oak throughout is original with no alteration or additions. The hasp is missing however the original iron plate and lock remain again untouched. In its time this would of been a very fine quality and expensive example of its type, constructed with the best quality timber and iron fittings of the period. CHARLES 1 SIX PLANK COFFER A fine example of English craftsmanship from the early 17th century. This oak plank chest stands at just 6" high x 5" wide x 3" deep. It has been constructed using the pegged and wedge technique. It features a simple incised carved and scratch design to the front and top panel. The lid opens easily with pin hinges- the common style used at that time. The planked sides are cut out in a'V' shape. The front and back panels are wedged into place. There is a small faint water stain on the lid. The underside has the makers initials possibly BR and the numeral 87 X1 This would have been an apprentice piece or traveling salesman example of workmanship. Thanks for looking. Antique 1667 German Oak Hammered Iron Traveling Trunk. Measures 44" wide by 25" high by 23" depth. NOT a reproduction. My parents bought this over from a trip to Europe in 1971. Extremely sturdy. Very little damage, just on some of the iron and I have the small the piece that is missing from the left bottom, it needs to be reattached. No key. There are two U-shaped pieces that would attach the trunk to a coach in the back. I have the shipping manifest with the shipping date of Feb. 1972 when my parents shipped it from Germany. This is obviously a very heavy piece(I guesstimate well more than 200 pounds) and would need to be shipped by a freight carrier. A Rare 17th Century Carved Oak Childs Coffer Of Boarded Construction 2ft Wide
A Child's Carved Oak Board Chest Circa 1620 A tactile chest this one at only 2ft wide. Of six plank construction the front carved with twin lunettes of crude design and the initials I E flanking a central lockplate also stamped with the initials RA to the facing lefthand side and also under the lockplate.I feel the lockplate is original to the chest and it was stamped when the lockplate was moved to a horizontal position from originaly being placed at an angle(evidence of old nail in situ) The sides which have signs of sap dammage to alternate corners are of riven timber and this is nice to see as it gives one confidence that this chest was made this size and not a later adaptation as the two boards are from the same piece of wood that was split all those years ago. The lid originally had three ring hinges that have gone over time and ... morewere replaced in the late 18th century looking at there design. The lid has been moved 1.5" to the right and the end cut this all matches the holes of the original ring hinges and hasp with the carcass of the chest. Antique 16th/17th Century German Oak Coffer On Stand
Here for sale is a beautiful old 16th or 17th century german oak coffer on probably later stand which at some point in time has been converted to a front double door opening cupboard. The coffer retains what I believe to be the original ironwork side handles hinges etc.The conversion work has resulted in the lid now fixed down.The timber is that delicious blackened aged oak colour and patina and the coffer itself is decorated with beautiful original panelling depicting what I think are coats of arms of the Holy Roman Empire. About the item: Rare antique early 18th century Fruitwood and Oak small cupboard. C 1720.It has lovely proportions and great colour/patina with two moulded panelled doors enclosing a plain shelved interior, flanked on either side by fluted columns. The end panels are moulded with geometric square motifs. It is in good original condition with only minor surface wear. The top planks have warped slightly with age, but this merely adds to the character of the piece and is all very much as you would expect from something that is nearly 300 years old.
