The hand wrought ironwork is beautifully done and in good condition for its age with only a small piece missing from the back bottom corner as shown in the photographs. It retains its original lock, hinges and a key that is likely original and all are in good working order. The lock will only remain in the unlocked position when the key is inserted and turned to the horizontal position. If the key is removed, the lock will automatically lock when the lid is closed. There is a beautifully wrought twisted iron bail style handle on the top for carrying and there is an iron ring attached near the base at each side presumably for tying the box in place when travelling. Please view all of the photographs- the condition is superb for its age however there are some cracks to the wood from age and normal wear and tear appropriate for a chest that is approximately 500 years old. Beautifully Carved Antique English Oak Coffer Blanket Box Chest
Beautifully Carved Antique English Oak Coffer Three front raised panels are elegantly carved with fine acanthus leaf motif. The 7/8" solid top is made with breadboard ends. The 1" thick sides are panelled and beaded. The back consists of two reverse-raised panels in a 1" thick frame. The skirted bottom conceals a set of four small metal casters. The inside is all open. This piece shows beautiful rich dark brown patina throughout. This coffer took some considerable skill to build and. Although it is an antique with the usual slight bumps, it's excellent condition reflects the care with which this piece was crafted and treated through the years. The hinges and locking mechanism(no key) are solid brass. The top shows a couple of age cracks that are normal for a piece of this vintage. 17th/18th Century Oak Coffer with Inlaid Top. Rare. About as Rustic as Possible!
Description Antique Oak Coffer. Two dates here, the lower section is very early probably about c1670, the lid is a bit later, probably c1720. This is such an amazing piece. It's the most rustic thing I have ever owned, the timbers look ancient, they are grizzled and worn, rough cut in places(the back looks like it was roughly hacked off a tree) and just looks wonderful, if only it cold talk, it must have seen so much interesting history in it's 340 odd years! The top is a little later. And very unusually has satinwood and ebony triangular inlays, this is very very rare, these things are always just plain oak or some light carving(like this one has on the front) but very rarely do they have inlays. The inlays are fairly provincial looking and definately hand applied and cut, they again are just great to behold! If you love it. It stands on stile feet and has a three panel front which does not have later carving as so many do. The lock and striking plate are intact. A good large size. Painted Oak coffer c1836 This is the best'ships Masters' captain or owner) coffer we have seen in the last 30 years. From the historic port of Nantes it is constructed of fine oak rather than the typical pine. The decoration is original and untouched and depicted garlands of flowers with two delightfully naïve canary or oriole type birds. It is impossible to pinpoint its history. They were typically commissioned by ships captains or owners and are usually painted though I have never seen illustrations of such a romantic example. The inference is that it is a marriage piece with the inscribed date that of the union. One can guess it was a gift from a mariner/owner to his bride. The photos do not do it justice it is a wonderfully romantic piece and very effective focal piece for any room. We love it. IF YOU WANT TO SEE ANY FURTHER IMAGES PLEASE JUST ASK. This lovely coffer dates originally from c.1720. But has had carving and alteration added over the years. Most of the alteration is old, probably Victorian, in date. The coffer has a planked top, and a heavily carved front and sides- we believe that the carving was added later, probably in the early Victorian times. It is supported on straight legs with carved shoulders at the front. The coffer has metal hinges, which are old, although we do not believe them to be original to the piece. The bits of newspaper covering the hinges are dated 1798 and 1799. The coffer retains a lock, but this is wobbly and we do not know whether it works ... moreor not- please note that no key is present. The coffer is constructed from solid oak. Condition: Overall this handsome piece is in usuable condition. But with some wear consistent with age and use. There is some overall scuffing and wear to the woodwork as might be expected, and the piece is overall faded. As is mentioned above the coffer has had significant alteration over the years- the carving has been added, the hinges have been replaced, and the front plank of the top is also a replacement. A piece of wood has been added to the underneath of the top to strengthen it. There are some areas of wood loss, and some signs of old woodworm- this is not active, but has been retreated as a precaution. The carved shoulder at the left-hand side of the front is a little loose, as is the lock. There is some wood shrinkage cracking to the planks of the base. The top has some scratching and heavy indentation. Please refer to photographs below. ANTIQUE SOLID OAK CHEST TRUNK COFFER, EARLY 1700’s
This antique solid oak chest/trunk/coffer came into our family when it was purchased from an antique store in Summerland. California back in the mid 1980's. It was sold to us with the provenance that it is from the early 1700's and was a ship captain's chest/trunk/coffer and was from England. Condition as shown in the pictures is as we received it and it has been well cared for since it came into our hands. It has the original hand forged iron hardware and does have the original working lock and key. The construction is with wood pegs and the main box is made with one piece oak planks, with the front and side decorations placed over that. Overall dimensions of this piece are: approximately 48" long, by approximately 24" deep, by approximately 24" high. Considering that the planks used in this piece are all straight ... moregrain with no knots, it is quite possible the tree the wood came from was very old itself. Antique 1667 German Oak Hammered Iron Traveling Trunk. Measures 44" wide by 25" high by 23" depth. NOT a reproduction. My parents bought this over from a trip to Europe in 1971. Extremely sturdy. Very little damage, just on some of the iron and I have the small the piece that is missing from the left bottom, it needs to be reattached. No key. There are two U-shaped pieces that would attach the trunk to a coach in the back. I have the shipping manifest with the shipping date of Feb. 1972 when my parents shipped it from Germany. An Elegant Charles II Carved Oak Coffer circa 1680 Lancashire Region
A Fine Carved Oak Coffer Circa 1680. An elegant three panel oak chest.The front carved with a gadrooned top rail over three panels,depicting a combination of flowers from a central stem,the stiles carved with a fan shaped flower that is typical of Lancashire/ Cheshire region. The back is four panels and the sides are twin panel but one has been cut down over time to reduce the depth of this chest. The lid is pin hinged with a candle box to the interior and the chest still stands at its original height. A Rare 17th Century Carved Oak Childs Coffer Of Boarded Construction 2ft Wide
A Child's Carved Oak Board Chest Circa 1620 A tactile chest this one at only 2ft wide. Of six plank construction the front carved with twin lunettes of crude design and the initials I E flanking a central lockplate also stamped with the initials RA to the facing lefthand side and also under the lockplate.I feel the lockplate is original to the chest and it was stamped when the lockplate was moved to a horizontal position from originaly being placed at an angle(evidence of old nail in situ) The sides which have signs of sap dammage to alternate corners are of riven timber and this is nice to see as it gives one confidence that this chest was made this size and not a later adaptation as the two boards are from the same piece of wood that was split all those years ago. The lid originally had three ring hinges that have gone over time and ... morewere replaced in the late 18th century looking at there design. The lid has been moved 1.5" to the right and the end cut this all matches the holes of the original ring hinges and hasp with the carcass of the chest. It has had a hard life but hey its an original child's chest circa 1620 with a lovely deep colour and patina. 24" Wide 14.5" High 13" Deep In my opinion its a sweet little gem that will inhance any collection.Please get in touch for further images or information that may be required. Antique 16th/17th Century German Oak Coffer On Stand
Here for sale is a beautiful old 16th or 17th century german oak coffer on probably later stand which at some point in time has been converted to a front double door opening cupboard. The coffer retains what I believe to be the original ironwork side handles hinges etc.The conversion work has resulted in the lid now fixed down.The timber is that delicious blackened aged oak colour and patina and the coffer itself is decorated with beautiful original panelling depicting what I think are coats of arms of the Holy Roman Empire. However please examine the photographs I have taken to form your own opinion.Also please feel free to ask any questions and I will do my best to answer them. The coffer sits on a lovely matching low stand but as I said I think it was a later addition.The measurements of the actual coffer without stand are 53 and a half ... moreinches in length x 25 inches deep x 24 inches high.When sat on the stand the whole piece stands at 35 and 3/4 inches tall. This is a magnificent piece of historic furniture and would look stunning stood in a hallway lounge or dining room area even an upstairs landing.Overall the coffer is in very good condition. Payment is by paypal only and must be paid within 48hrs of the end of the auction.There is no postage involved for obvious reasons so any buyer can either collect or arrange own courier.
