The finish ... morehas a darkened aged look– beautiful. This is a wonderful old piece- I believe it to be about 1920 It has 2 handkerchief drawers on the top. There are 2 drawers side by side and below those. 2 large drawers. The drawer pulls are wood. There grooves in the 2 small drawers and in the bottom drawers. On the sides of the chest. There are grooves again, nice detail. When it is upside down the bottom is the bottom of the last drawer. Only one side of the center drawer is dovetailed, it was easier and cheaper to make that way. The salesman had the one corner as an example to show his customers. Condition: Really very good. There are no splits in the outside wood. A couple of the drawers have wood splits(inside) The corner of the back right facing leg was broken off. But it looks like someone shaped it. It is not noticeable unless you compare the sides. There is a stain in one drawer see photo. All of the drawers slide easily. It needs a good cleaning. Look at all the photos and ask questions. We pack well and ship quickly. We welcome questions. It had been leather covered ... morewhen new, because I can see the evidence of the leather in several places. Picture#11 shows the leather still remaining at the top edge of the chest. The dimensions are: Length- 19" Height- 14" Depth- 9" This is the wood box dimension, without adding for the hardware. The lock and latches are Eagle Lock Co. Terryville,CT. There is no key. The handle has to be the original leather covered one and the leather is not in good shape, but it certainly fits with the age of the chest. All of the latches, hinges and lock are complete and work fine, except for the missing key. For those of you who know more about this. I'm sure you can identify the brand from the drawer knobs and diamond shaped back plates on them. I'm sure it has been sanded and finished, probably at the time the leather was removed. Although the wood surface probably wasn't original, it looks like pine to me, and looks nice with the varnished surface. Please email me with any questions you might have. We do not have the credentials to fully attribute this beautiful chippendale mahogany(maybe walnut) chest of drawers with pine secondary woods to John Selden from Norfolk, VA. Our Williamsburg/John Selden attribution comes from viewing similar chests on the internet. This piece was purchased from a Norfolk, VA. estate. Please view the link provided for more information. The bail handle pulls appear to be original with the exception of the one replaced rosette. The pull on top drawer left side looks to have been moved a fraction of an inch. Also. It's identical to the other pulls but it looks a little smaller than the others, so it might be a replacement. Full dustboards(we realize full dustboards is more of an English feature but if you research this link you'll find that John Selden used full dustboards as well) and they are undoubtly a Virginia feature, Norfolk, Petersburg, Williamsburg. This is an 18th Century European chest that we have been told is of Dutch origin. The chest stands approximately 41" high. It is 44" wide and 23 3/16" deep. The chest has four working drawers with polychrome painting. The painted design looks absolutely stunnning with minimal losses appropriate for age and use. The chest is painted so the floral motif lines up when the drawers are closed. A deep green backdrop provides a stunning foundation for the vibrant golds. Reddish orange and light green floral scroll design. The original brass hardware on this piece is absolutely stunning. The handles and keyholes have a winged serpent/phoenix behind them. American Queen Anne Oak Chest of Drawers Circa 1720 Description: An early 18th century American Queen Anne oak chest of drawers. Circa 1720. The chest features an old(possibly original) finish with gorgeous patina, quarter round molding, and panelled sides. It has Queen Anne period brasses though it may have originally had William and Mary style drop pulls. The bracket feet are original. The carcass is cedar and pine. Drawers are white oak. We think this is probably from the mid-Atlantic states, possibly Virginia. It is 37 1/2" wide by 21" deep by 36 1/2" high. Condition: Very good overall. The biggest issue is replaced pulls and backplates on the bottom drawer. All locks are intact though the chest does not have a key. There is a small chunk of wood missing on the rail over the second drawer down. Probably from someone breaking ... moreinto a locked drawer. Antique 18th Century English George II Mahogany Tall Chest of Drawers c. 1750
This listing is for an 18th Century English George II Tall Case Chest of Two over Four Drawers. Featuring original Queen Anne period brass hardware and all original locks, circa 1740-50. It is a beautiful piece with a simple form so successful commercially that it was copied in bedroom furniture for nearly 300 years, the same form being used in case pieces today. It is of outstanding craftsmanship being formed almost entirely of solid Cuban Mahogany, today a rare and restricted wood of incredible cost, known for it's dark and dense grain formations. A carved crown molding wraps around the front and sides. Repaired in numerous areas along, completing the smooth finished top of the case. The sides of the case are two boards that blind-dovetail at the top and through-dovetail at the bottom. The face of the case features two smaller drawers ... moreover four graduated larger drawers, each with full molded lips of the solid and fully original brass Queen Anne brass hardware, an original lock on every drawer(except the bottom) with many secured with original hand forged rose head nails and a few screws. Each drawer is hand dovetailed. Uniquely with graduating dovetails- the top two drawers have two dovetails, the next drawer down has three dovetails, the third down four dovetails, fourth with five dovetails and the bottom drawer with six. The top two drawers are divided by an upright bar with a half-dovetail joint penetrating the crossbar. Each drawer is divided with full dust board divisions, mahogany along the face, pine secondary woods making up the rest of the dust board. The dust board is primarily an English invention, found only infrequently on American case pieces, and conveniently protects clothing and items in drawers below from being dirtied by the drawer action. The back of the case is made up of one original board and the rest replaced. All re-secured with newer nails- a label inside on one of the replaced boards refers to a furniture depository in England. American Chippendale Painted Antique Blanket Chest of Drawers Pennsylvania. C. 1779 Item# 130002EEP16 This is a well worn and nearly untouched American Pennsylvania Chippendale Blanket Chest over Two Drawers. The interior of the lid covered in a fine woven green textile embroidered lower right"A.M.M. 1779" Likewise, the bottom of the inside of the chest bears the very faint initials and date"A M M 1779" these difficult to capture accurately with the camera and hard to see also with the eye. The underside of the lid of the till is inscribed in pencil"Hannah Britton" in a script that would suggest a somewhat early inscription by someone who owned the chest at one point. Crafted entirely of tulip poplar. Each surface of the case is crafted of a single solid unjoined board painted with a heavily oxidized brown streaked ... morepaint. The dovetails that join the case stretch from the top to the bottom of each toe, the feet becoming an integral part of the form, these well preserved and fully original. The molding around the lid, the midsection and the base are applied in the same manner, each with tiny wooden pins hammered through at regular intervals. The pair of drawers both bear pairs of replaced hardware, these inserted into the same original holes, both locks appearing to be fully original. The drawer frame is dovetailed front and back, the bottom heavily chamfered into rabbets on either side and nailed at the back in the typical manner. The interior of the chest has a later stain. While the 18th Century blanket chest is a very prevalent form. These are regularly refinished and rarely retain the original oxidized surface- even fewer also retain numerous matched inscriptions, dated and with some prior ownership inscribed on the interior. Well preserved in every way, this piece is untouched for the most part, of a desirable medium size and sturdy and strong in every way. Up for auction is a pine chest of drawers. This is a primitive. Made before 1800. The drawers are all hand planed and hand dove tailed. The top is hand dovetailed, as well. It is in beautiful condition. The pulls have been replaced. This chest is 49 inches high and 40.5 inches across and 20.75 inches deep. It weighs about 100 pounds. Every side, including the top is one board. There is a splotch of paint on the back near one of the back legs about 6" by 4" The drawers are graduated. English Georgian Chippendale Mahogany Chest of Two over Three Drawers Late 18th Century c. 1760-80 Item# 120001LMM01 Crafted of solid mahogany using broad boards to construct the top and sides. Each two board construction with a very thin strip completing the back edge. An applied molded carved rim wraps around the perimeter of the projecting top. Two smaller drawers rest over three wide graduated drawers, each with entirely original bail pull brasses and very early(probably replaced) locks, being constructed of oak secondary woods hand dovetailed with a flat bottom beneath applied runners and nailed at the back with original rosehead nails. Each drawer features full length yellow pine dustboards between each drawer to protect the contents of each drawer from dust and dirt as the drawer moves in and out of the case- these also support each ... moredrawer, allowing for a smooth flowing motion in the case. The chest rests over four large bracket feet, each fully original with original blocking on all but one of the feet. The back is original and untouched. Constructed of four pine boards lined with original hand forged rosehead nails. The secondary pine triangle supporting the back feet dovetails into the feet, making them permanent and incredibly strong. This is a remarkably well preserved chest with originality in almost every facet of the case. It is incredibly dense and heavy. Built to last the test of time- attention was shown in every detail of the construction, allowing this chest to survive and thrive two hundred and fifty years later. It is an outstanding acquisition for any collector of 18th Century English Chippendale and a treasure that will be enjoyed in your home for many generations to come. This is a beautiful primitive piece with raised storage and two pull out drawers. Wonderful antique details such as the original hinges and the cut Chippendale style legs. This is a wide plank pine chest with Chestnut drawers. Very unusual solid large boards where used from a time when pine could be harvested in this size. The hinges are hand hammered. Knot holes are tin covered to keep mice out. This piece measures 41 1/2" high x 39 1/2" wide x 18 3/4" deep. Here is a beautiful primitive piece with a lot of character. CHEST OF DRAWERS ANTIQUE CHAIRS TABLES BRONZE SCULPTURES FINE PAINTINGS SCHOOL OF ORIGIN SUBJECT LAMPS. LIGHTING AMERICAN CHIPPENDALE PAINTED BLANKET CHEST OF DRAWERS Pennsylvania. C. 1790-1810; Nearly Untouched Item# 1406IPP23A This absolute jewel remains in nearly pristine condition. Retaining a very early and almost certainly original painted surface with untouched structure and rugged charm. Crafted in Pennsylvania, the style of the hinges and drawer construction suggest the form could be as late as 1810. The heavy and eternal construction, typical of the state, is lightened by the whimsical nature of the painted surface. The whole is framed nicely between the crackled and worn brown top and dark(possibly brown) feet and base molding- the facade is divided evenly into thirds, the upper two-thirds decorated in a speckled ochre embellished ... moreby brilliant red rectangular panels with inset corners spaced evenly around the midriff. A thin molding divides the lower one-third, this with a muted earthy red pigment with ochre speckles grounding the three drawers- these have a beautiful teal pigment, the same tone employed in much of the thin molding. Construction of the form is typical of the Southeastern counties of Pennsylvania. The top with open tongues on either end finished in breadboard ends affixed with three wedged through-tenons; note the face of the tenon is left open along the front of the chest, exposing the quality of craftsmanship. This lifts over a pair of wrought iron strap hinges, these moved just slightly to account for shrinkage of the top over time. The interior is clean other than a single till, craftily constructed to conceal three tiny drawers in a compartment beneath the primary space, accessed by lifting upward on the front panel. All three drawers are constructed of poplar, the bottoms deeply chamfered and the backs nailed along the back edge. PENNSYLVANIA CHIPPENDALE WALNUT ANTIQUE CHEST OF DRAWERS Probably Delaware River Valley c. 1780. Feet& brasses replaced Item# 411PKP29A This precious little American Chippendale bachelor's chest of drawers is a fine representation of rural Pennsylvania craftsmanship. Probably originating from the Delaware River Valley region. The chest is distinct for it's marvelous display of swirling walnut throughout the drawers and particularly in the top of the chest. This chaotic furling of the grain is almost coordinated between the drawers, the craftsman matching swirls only subtly to give cohesion to the facade. The construction is typical of the region. The drawers crafted with tulip poplar woods in the frame with the white pine planks in the bottom set perpendicular to the face against the rabbets in the sides with runners applied over ... morethis. Original rosehead nails tack the back edge of each drawer bottom and are strengthened with triangular blocks along the lip. Some care was shown in crafting the feet. All of which are 20th century replacements. With a robust sense of presence, the feet appear to be faithful representations of what would have been on the chest originally. While unfortunate that the feet have been lost, it is a relatively common issue due to the immense pressure the feet remain under and their susceptibility to breakage during moving. The price of the chest is reflective of the replaced feet, as a chest of this very attractive size and form should command an upper four figure market value with original feet. Any collector of period American furniture. Particularly anyone who enjoys the masculinity and rural qualities of Delaware River Valley furniture, will certainly cherish this fine bachelor's chest. It has such presence and movement in the wood under the glowing patina of the mellowed surface- it will be a wonderful addition to any period or classically decorated interior. FINE AMERICAN CHIPPENDALE WALNUT BLANKET CHEST OF DRAWERS Pennsylvania c. 1780. Preserved in nearly untouched condition Item# 411DXP29A This unusually striking American Chippendale blanket chest is distinguished by the open dovetailing of the case. This following from the sides through the feet to accentuate the hand crafted nature of the object. Pennsylvania craftsmen during the late 18th century built these pieces to be family heirlooms that could pass from one generation to the next and the quality of craftsmanship was something they took pride in and openly advertised- while other work centers sought to hide the dovetail, being simply a means of joining one plank to another, clientele in this region expected excellent joinery and examined it as part of the purchase process. As a result, the dovetail became something of an art form, this ... moreexercised to it's fullest in the presentation of the case. Remaining in nearly undisturbed condition with only minor repairs. The chest retains not only it's original brasses and all original hardware but also untouched feet- these are beautiful statements of purity in construction, the entire underside revealing only wooden peg joinery with no glue or nails. A back foot support and accompanying block are separated from the underside, allowing you to see exactly how the blocking perfectly fits together inside of the foot(see pictures in the slideshow) The drawers are constructed in the typical manner of the region. The poplar secondary woods hand dovetailed in the frame with the two-board bottom half-lapped at the joint, chamfered along the sides and set in grooves, allowing them to expand and contract freely. They retain their original brasses and locks, though it is possible the middle drawer has a replaced bottom since the two planks are not half-lapped and the end grains show some variation.
