WHAT IS'TOMBAK' Owing to economic constraints. Fewer objects were made of gold and silver in the 18th century and this led to an increase in the manufacture of tombak wares. Brass and copper wares gilded in this way are called"tombak" The earliest examples of Ottoman metalworking are military equipment. Mamluk influence is apparent in 15th-century forms and styles of decoration. The style called"Classical Ottoman" takes shape during the early 16th century. Of special importance during the 16th and 17th centuries are harmoniously-proportioned candlesticks that have austerely-styled forms and are lacking in embellishment but contemporary with them are interesting ... moreexamples of works whose surfaces are entirely covered with rumi-palmette compositions. Description This antique circa early 19th century Canakkale Turkish Ottoman pottery Dates bowl. Is hand thrown in earthenware pottery of shallow rounded form with angled rim. It has three hand modelled serpent snake feet( possibly vipers) applied to the base. The front of the bowl dish is hand painted in typical Canakkale colours including turquoise with a flower head design and a distinctive leaf like pattern around the rim. The underside is covered in a translucent dark mustard green glaze but due to the underlaying reddish hue to the fired surface of the earthenware body, the glaze has a pale orange hue and the serpents each individually hand painted in brown, mustard yellow over white slip and translucent greeny glaze. CONDITION The bowl has a lovely very warped shape from the kiln and there is a 6cm. 2& 3/8" inches) hairline ... morecrack to one side running from a blob of greeny glaze on the edge, which has adhered to something else in the kiln and chipped when removed. Çanakkale(whose name may be translated as"Pottery castle" was a ceramics manufacturing center in which were produced works that are distinctive for their originality of form. A rough red clay was used in pottery making though a beige-colored clay is encountered on rare occasions. Large. Shallow dishes and jars make an appearance in Çanakkale's output in the late 17th and early 18th centuries. These are of higher quality and more successfully executed than those made a later date. Designs are painted in purplish brown, orange, yellow, dark blue, and white under green, brown, oxide-yellow, and colorless glazes. Çanakkale(whose name may be translated as"Pottery castle" was a ceramics manufacturing center in which were produced works that are distinctive for their originality of form. A rough red clay was used in pottery making though a beige-colored clay is encountered on rare occasions. Large. Shallow dishes and jars make an appearance in Çanakkale's output in the late 17th and early 18th centuries. These are of higher quality and more successfully executed than those made a later date. Old Turkish Ottoman Sword Pala Damascus Islamic Kilij not Shamshir, 19th Century
The Kilij is the traditional saber of the Ottomans. The shorter version with curved blade and‘T’ spine is known as Pala. This Pala has a blade of 27 inches long forged from laminated Damascus steel and with traces of silver inlay cartouche and decorations on one side. The wood scabbard is covered with leather and mounted with chased brass locket and chape. The classically shaped grips with bulbous pommel is made of horn. The leather is a late/later replacement. The grip has a crack on one side but solid and fully intact. Total length 34 1/2 inches. Very good condition. Please inquire for International Shipping before bidding! No shipping to Russia or China.

Turkish/Ottoman towel - 19th century - stylised embroidery, some metalallic
This is the last Turkish/Ottoman towel/shawl in my collection. Which I am selling. It measures 39" 100cms) long + a short fringe, and 29" 74cms) across. The hand embroidery is very stylised and there is gold coloured thread included in the design. The plain woven background has a thicker, striped effect in places. Apart from one small hole and a slight degradation of colour due to age, this is in good condition. The embroidery has been done in, probably, natural dyes and has a variety of stitches.
