This collared bronze vase stands some eight inches(8" in height and has a marvelously well done. Hand chased hunting design motif around the body. While I have dated the piece as early 19th century, I actually believe that it could be considerably older. However, I prefer to err on the side of caution and so will leave it to you to decide for yourself. I do absolutely guarantee that it is no later than the 19th century. There are two damaged areas, both of which are pictured. One of them is a"ding" or a dent, if you prefer) while the other is a split that has been closed with a line of solder. YOU ARE BIDDING ON A RARE ANTIQUE PERSIAN SAFAVID STYLE TINNED COPPER CEREMONY BOWL. ITEM HAS SOME DINGS AND WEAR SIGNS. IT IS AROUND A 100 YEARS OLD. IT WEIGHS 442 GRAMS AND IT MEASURES: 6 1/2" TOP DIAMETER OF THE BOWL. 3" TALL, 2 3/4" DEPTH OF THE BOWL, 2mm THICK! Exact origin and age unknown. Believed to date around late 19th century early 20th. Tinned Copper Bowl Description The object is medium. Copper hammered to a shallow circular shape, with everted rim, and with a short vertical or flared base/foot. The copper bowl is 6 1/2"16.51 Centimeter diameter(at top) around the bowl and 3"7.62 Centimeter high. It has a large mouth and a smaller base. The exterior of the tinned copper bowl is engraved with a variety of abstract(geometric) motifs and roundels and multiple bands(and"lozenges' = dents) Because ... moreof the prevalence of geometric motifs it is perhaps not a figural bowl. There is no epigraphic/calligraphic decoration. The exterior/outer surface is decorated with incised motifs and hammer strikes. It is basically decorated on the outside with a band of geometrical design(sine waves and dots) This single band with pattern is located high near the mouth/rim and numerous dents(undoubtedly made with hammer strikes) appear below the band.There a 4 main patterns on the inside. Main Decorations Outside surface: There are essentially 2 concentric bands of decoration. It is basically decorated on the outside with a band of geometrical design(52 sine waves and also dots) This single band with pattern is located high near the mouth/rim and below this band is a broad band comprising 3 rows of dent patterns. Abstract iconography on the upper outside of an Islamic(Persian) Safavid period tinned copper bowl identified as a Ceremony Bowl. This listing is for an absolutely lovely. Antique and rare example of a safavid style ewer likely dating to that period or around that time although it has not been tested. This is one of two ewers from my collection that I will be listing this week. If you are interested in this genre of collecting let me know because I will be possibly listing a couple more lovely items. including an amazing rare tray and a lovely porcelain jar. This Ewer is the smaller of the two that I have listed and has a rounded body with a graceful spiral design and a slightly less concave base. The engraving is equisitely detailed and depicts birds in the design. The size is 13.25 tall by about 6" wide. A fine original and very large genuine Safavid tinned copper wine bowl. The bowl of deep hemispherical form. With elevated rim. Standing on a short foot. Engraved around the body with a wide band of entwined split-palmettes. Between two rows of meandering floral vines featuring a frieze of calligraphy on a hatched ground. Arcade motifs near the foot. The foot also engraved with vine decoration. Size; 8. 1/2 inches( 22 cm) high. 11. 3/4 inches( 30 cm) wide. Condition; fine. LARGE 8.25" ANTIQUE PERSIAN ISLAMIC BRONZE BRASS ASTROLABE - SAFAVID STYLE?
A large 8 ¼” diameter antique Persian Islamic bronze or brass astrolabe. The main body is very elaborately and beautifully engraved with various scales inscriptions(presumably Farsi) and ornament. There are two zodiacal scales on both the front and the back. The the top has a winged figure holing a scales and on the reverse side a strange chimera like figure about to shoot a bow and arrow at its own tail that has a snakes head on it. There are five plates together with the elaborately fretted star indicator. The colour of the underlying metal of the plates and star indicator is a yellowish colour whereas that of the main body is slightly reddish. This may indicate that the plates and star indicator were made at a slightly later date than the main body. Perhaps to replace the originals that had gone missing. I cannot read Farsi and have ... moreno idea what the various inscriptions mean. I have been told in the past that the look and decoration is in the style of the later Safavid period(AD 1500– 1736) but I would not know if it actually dates from that time or not. It is certainly very old. Altogether. A highly desirable and decorative item. Please note that many of the images have been taken outside and have a rather strange cold bluish look but this is simply because the item was laid flat and reflected the blue sky. The images taken indoors give a better indication of the pleasant warm hue of the bronze. Please see images below. The star indicator has two cracks with an old repair that has come apart. The plates have a curious pink blotching over parts of them. Presumably this has been caused by somebody using an inappropriate cleaner that has caused the zinc or tin to be leached out of the surface of the brass/bronze leaving the copper behind.One of the plates has a piece missing from one edge. Perhaps referenced by the hand done calligraphy above and below. I say appears, because it depends on if large cats were actually once hunted with swords and spears(and using a goat as bait) The sheet was laid to a thin board backing at some point well into the long ago. This is not an area of expertise for me and these iconographic depictions are confusing to say the least. The painting is antique and I believe of the given dating…it certainly is no later than 19th Century, and could be ... morea lot earlier. Condition is reasonably good for the age with a genuine aura of time to the painted surfaces- no one would mistake this for one of the modern copies still produced by skilled artists in the region. The sheet shows some expected surface soil, with some minor old scuffing to the painting surfaces as seen in the pics; even so, colors are strong and the sheet is still well adhered to the backing. There are ancient remnants of glue to the extreme left and right edges of the backing board, well away from the sheet; framed in, these would no be visible. That said, a wonderful and splendidly executed genuine antique Safavid Persian miniature depiction. A look at the pics should give a good idea of appearance and condition. Sheet size is about 8 1/4 in. vertical and 5 1/16 in. across; backing board is about 10 1/2 in. vertical and 7 3/8 in. across. Persian Miniature in Safavid style Court Scene 'Book of Kings' or 'Shahnameh'
A Persian miniature depicting an interior courtly scene. The arches and frames decorated with Timurid or Safavid tiles in cobalt blue and turquoise, highlighted in gold, possibly a scene from the'Book of Kings' or'Shahnameh' inscribed above and around the edge. This miniature is framed in an old frame that is either an antique or was made to look old. The back of the miniature shows where someone peeled up the corner to look at the print underneath where it can be seen the page is deeply yellowed with either age or acids from the cardboard used in the framing. The mat appears to be covered in linen. This miniature is undated as to do so will entail removing it from the frame which is needs to be done carefully. Antique Persian? Safavid? Kashkul. Very rare. Made from tinned copper. The Kashkul(begging bowl) is a typical boat shape with raised ends terminating in heads of sea creatures? The sides and ends of the bowl are decorated with cartouches of what appear to be sea creatures again and the raised base engraved with what could be waves to symbolise the sea. The Kashkul would have been used by a wandering religious man and was a sign of the poverty he assumed. Condition commensurate with age and use as per the photographs. A fabulous piece. I really didn't know anything about this item when I bought it but looking at images of kashkuls on Google and reading the details they seem to be quite sought after. Museum quality pair of antique Persian Door Knockers. the door knockers are made from Iron as far as I can tell. These are a very interesting pair. These would have been used on the entrance doors of a building. However the one with the long stick knocker. Would have been used on the door for the Male entrance. The other one with the heart shaped knocker would have been used for the Ladies entrance of the building. So they have an interesting history behind them. The have a beaurtiful shape. And have been hand chased with beautiful calligraphy all over. I think these date from early Qajar Era during the late 18th century. However somebody else saw them and suggest they were Safavid and not Qajar. So they ... morecould perhaps be 16th- 17th century. I have never seen anything similar to this on ebay ever. You are bidding on a very nice antique Tabarzin axe probably late 17th century early 18th century. I think this is Persian rather than Indian but the late Deccan era was highly influenced by the Safavid dynasty so is hard to tell. It is a very HEAVY piece of a considerable SIZE. The head is 7-1/2 inches long and the blade is 5 inches wide. Top to bottom 11-1/2 inches. The head is made from wootz while the shaft collar is not probably iron. The surface of the head had deep chiseled very detailed decorations. Overall a very well made axe still in good condition with some surface old pitting marks. In the book"the Art of The Muslim Knight" at page ... more268 there is an almost identical axe described as Southern India Deccan 17th 18th century. Please note the beautiful symmetry of the blade. Most of later axes having a rather flat top and also the hammer back of the head that also is not flat but v shaped, another reason I think this is Persian. A very nice piece.
